The general consensus in the democratic world is that the virus originated in China which engaged in a cover up.

Btw, didn't China oppose the Australian led demand to probe the origin of the Wuhan Flu?

Of course we trust science. And facts. And history. A regime which has always lied to its people is not going to believed.

The FT has spoken to dozens of medical professionals, government officials and ordinary citizens in Wuhan to find out what really happened in the first weeks of the outbreak. During the investigation, some of the people approached were threatened by police, who said that the FT had come to the city with “malicious intent”. Police harassment of virus victims, their relatives and anyone hoping to speak to them is continuing, raising doubts about whether Xi Jinping’s administration is really willing to facilitate the impartial investigation into the pandemic that it has promised the world.

Does it matter for what could go wrong in Wuhan after the first case being identified in the city when the same virus had been around in Europe and America for months?

Coronavirus entered India from Europe, Middle East and not China, claims IISc study

The report used genomics to suggest that the virus spread through the most travelled countries.

New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: The novel coronavirus in India may have originated from Europe, the Middle East, Oceania and South Asia regions, according to a study by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru.

The observation is a part of the findings of the IISc team comprising Kumar Somasundaram, Mainak Mondal and Ankita Lawarde after analysing 294 Indian viral genomes.

The objective of the study was to determine the genetic diversity among Indian SARS-CoV-2 viral isolates in comparison to the strains that are occurring worldwide.

"The potential origin appears to be countries mainly from Europe, the Middle East, Oceania and South Asia regions, which strongly implies the spread of virus through the most travelled countries," the team noted.

"Among different strains of the virus as identified by Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data, Indian SARS-CoV-2 viruses are enriched with G (50 per cent) and I (6.7 per cent) clades in addition to 40 per cent samples with unknown genetic variants," it stated further.

The team is also finding the functional impact of high occurrence non-synonymous mutations on the viral protein functions and use this information toward understanding immune escape mechanisms and also developing mutant specific therapies.

The team noted that while the novel coronavirus increased to more than five million worldwide, it has just crossed over one lakh in India.

The low infection rate in India, according to the team, could be due to long lockdown with effective social distancing, active identification of COVID-19 patients and quarantining them with proper treatment, presumed cross-immune protection and possibly variation in the viral strains that are introduced or prevalent in India.

"Comparison of viral genome sequences from different regions/countries allows us to identify the genetic diversity among viruses which would help in ascertaining virulence, disease pathogenicity, as well as origin and spread of SARS- CoV-2, between countries," the team added.

New York-area coronavirus outbreak originated primarily in Europe, not China: report
By Dom Calicchio | Fox News

Two separate studies show that the coronavirus outbreak in the New York City area – by far the most deadly in the U.S. – originated from Europe, not China, according to a report.

Researchers conducting one of the studies have detected seven separate lineages of viruses that have arrived in the New York City area and they expect to find more, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

The two studies are being conducted by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the New York University School of Medicine.

Despite examining different examples of the outbreak, researchers from both teams reached largely the same conclusions about its origins, the Times reported.

“The majority is clearly European,” Dr. Harm van Bakel, a geneticist and co-author of the Icahn School’s study, told the newspaper.

Travelers likely carrying the virus had already been arriving in New York from Europe before Jan. 31, when President Trump limited entry by foreign nationals who’d been in China and March 11, when the president announced plans to block travelers from most parts of Europe, the Times reported.

On March 19, the newspaper reported that travelers arriving from Europe – where outbreaks in Italy and Spain were severe – were being asked at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport only if they had been to China or Iran, not if they had visited the hardest-hit nations in Europe.

“People were just oblivious,” Dr. Adriana Heguy of the NYU research team told the Times.

Researchers need to track the history of the virus so they will be able to develop vaccines and modify them as the virus mutates into other forms, the report said.

As of late Wednesday, the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, had infected 1.5 million people worldwide and killed nearly 88,000 people.

In the U.S., the virus had infected more than 420,000 people and killed more than 14,300.

In New York City, the virus had infected nearly 82,000 people (more than 19 percent of all U.S. cases) and killed more than 6,200 (nearly 44 percent of all U.S. deaths).

Most Australian coronavirus cases coming from USA: Scott Morrison
By Nick Pearson
10:56am Mar 20, 2020
The United States is the country of origin for most of the coronavirus cases in Australia, the prime minister has said.

Speaking on 2GB this morning, Scott Morrison said now was the right time to close the nation's borders.

"We were able to slow the virus' start and spread in Australia through these early periods," Mr Morrison said.

"The country which has actually been responsible for a large amount of these (coronavirus cases) has actually been the United States.

"At the end of the day, that's a function of the number of people who travel between the US and Australia."
Eighty per cent of coronavirus cases in Australia are people who have come in from overseas or have caught the disease directly from them.

A failure to conduct adequate numbers of coronavirus tests meant the United States appeared to have many more infections in recent weeks than had been announced.

Of course. It could have entered from anywhere. The point being it originated in China.

Coronavirus: Scientists find two viruses related to COVID-19 outside of China

Viruses closely related to the one currently causing death and misery across the globe have been discovered in Cambodia and in Japan.

But luckily, not in the wild.

The first was found in horseshoe bats which have been stored in a freezer in Cambodia since 2010, reports Nature. The second was found in a little Japanese horseshoe bat captured in 2013.

They're the first viruses related to SARS-CoV-2 found outside of China, where the current pandemic began at the end of 2019.

SARS-CoV-2, responsible for the disease COVID-19, is widely believed to have originated in bats before making the leap to humans, perhaps via another animal.

The genome of the Cambodian virus is yet to be fully sequenced, but is expected to shine some light on how the family of coronaviruses has evolved. Parts that have been looked at so far show similarities.

The Japanese one shares 81 percent of its genome with SARS-CoV-2, Nature reported - making it a distant relative, but related nonetheless.

Alice Latinne, an evolutionary biologist at the Wildlife Conservation Society Vietnam in Hanoi, told Nature the finds were exciting - they prove for the first time viruses like SARS-CoV-2 can be found in bats in other parts of the world than China.

Other scientists said there could be others waiting to be discovered. Before now, the only other known relative was RaTG13, found in China in 2013. It shares about 96 percent of its genome with SARS-CoV-2, meaning they diverged about 40 to 70 years ago.

"SARS-CoV-2 probably wasn't a brand new virus that popped up all of a sudden," said Tracey Goldstein, associate director of the One Health Institute at the University of California, Davis.

"Viruses in this group existed before we became aware of them in 2019."

While RaTG13 is likely to have the ability to infect people, it's unclear if either of the new ones do - the Cambodian one, for example, is yet to have its spike protein closely examined.

If the Cambodian virus shares more of its genome with SARS-CoV-2 than RaTG13 does, it's likely to be the direct ancestor - providing valuable insight into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scientists around the world have a general consensus that the Wuhan flu originated in China. In democratic societies, fringe theories are also allowed to be aired

But why was Dr. Li Wenliang jailed?

its quite normal for dictatorships to hide anything that hurts their pride their view their values..

worldwide these dictatorships will do their best to show an image of everything is fine and we are happy..

my opinion is its not importand where this virus did come from.. its important how ithe government tried to make it stop.. and here we have lies, hiding, cover ups and so on and so on..

we had outbreaks in many areas with different viruses and mostly the governments had been sucessfull

china may have been sucessfull to clean it up for themselves but they could have done a great work for the world but they only cared for their image and harmed all states on the globe..

viruses alike corona existed before and had several outbreak in the last 20 years on different locations..

additionally I can say corona may be not extrem worser than the flue , its sure that it is worser but not siginificantly worser like the media wants to tell us..

Viruses have nothing to do with ideologies, democracy doesn't stop viruses, check what is happening in US and India.
