OVERVIEW Greenland is becoming more and more prominent on the polished floors
In recent years, Greenland has fought for an increasingly important role on the international stage. The icing on the cake is the new defense agreement with the United States, where Greenland's right to self-determination is cemented.

He toured with the message again and again during the months when the pressure from Donald Trump was greatest. But with yesterday's agreement, Greenland's head of government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, no longer needs to repeat the message about Greenland's right to self-determination in the hope that it will seep into the White House.
Because with the agreement, it is now clear in black and white that the United States recognizes Greenland's right to self-determination.
This was also exactly what Jens-Frederik Nielsen emphasized at a press conference after the signature was put in the UN building.
- I am particularly proud that this agreement establishes that Greenland must be respected. Our right to self-determination has been respected," he said.

Therefore, it also happened that the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vivian Motzfeldt, went to Tromsø in May 2025 to – on behalf of the Kingdom of Denmark – take over the chairmanship of the Arctic Council from Norway.
- It was also a huge victory. The whole part about the Arctic Council would have been absolutely fantastic if there was a little more life in the Arctic Council, but unfortunately not much is happening, says Rasmus Leander.

In many ways, Greenland was at the centre of the annual security conference in the German city of Munich in February. Here, world leaders, defense and military people, diplomats and politicians met to talk about security in the world.
The focus was on the relationship between the EU and the United States, but the United States' threats against Greenland were one of the major topics of conversation that Greenland's head of government, Jes-Frederik Nielsen, also addressed in a panel debate.
"Greenlanders have not felt the threats from Russia and China. The first time they really felt threatened was when an ally threatened to take them over and buy them, Jens-Frederik Nielsen said, among other things, during the panel debate.
According to Rasmus Leander Nielsen, we have to get used to the fact that it will be the new normal that the Greenlandic head of government will participate in security conferences such as the one in Munich.
- I think so, for sure. It is two Munich conferences in a row, where Greenland has actually played a major role, he says.

October, 2025: Speech to the European Parliament and closer cooperation with the EU

It made headlines when Greenland's head of government was in Strasbourg in October to give a speech to the European Parliament.
Greenland withdrew from the European Community in 1982 after a referendum, but lately the relationship with the EU has become stronger.
In his speech, Jens-Frederik Nielsen emphasized, among other things, the opportunities for an expanded partnership between Greenland and the EU in a number of areas, but also thanked the EU for being a faithful friend:
- I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to you, the EU, for your strong support for Greenland in the challenging times we are going through right now. You have stood by our side as a friend and partner. We will never forget that. Thank you, said Jens-Frederik Nielsen in the speech.
Earlier this month, the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, was in Nuuk, where the EU, Greenland and Denmark signed a new joint declaration that expands cooperation on critical raw materials, housing, tourism, energy and digital communication, among other things.
At the same time, the EU is investing EUR 200 million in Greenland to support the objectives.

September, 2026: Agreement between Greenland, Denmark and the United States

Unlike the defense agreement from 1951, which the United States entered into with Denmark, and which Greenland did not become a signatory to until 2004, Greenland has been involved all the way in the negotiation work that led up to the agreement presented on Monday.
Here, it is not only the cementing of Greenland's right to self-determination that Rasmus Leander notes, but also NATO's importance for Greenland stands out.
- In the past, they have been very critical of NATO. Now, in fact, they are happy that NATO takes up so much space in the agreement that has come out. So it's a relatively big quantum leap.
