MBDA open to cooperation with Turkey

With the mock-up of the latest development from the company, including the Aster 30 B1NT and the CAMM-ER, the MBDA stand confirmed the intention of the European missile company to play a role in Turkey. “We fully understand the Turkish will to fully develop a national missile capability, Roketsan being the main player, however we are always available to discuss common business,” Michele Di Nunzio, Vice-President Eurasia for MBDA tells EDR On-Line on Day 1 of IDEF 2021.

“We look to a win-win approach, where MBDA and Turkey can partner to make business, not to a simple transfer of technology,” he explains. The European group can definitely bring some technology bricks to Turkey, while the latter can facilitate the penetration in some markets.

One topic might be that of the Future Turkish Fighter, where Turkey is cooperating with BAE Systems on the UK as well as with other British companies. “This is of course of interest also for MBDA, aiming not only at the local market but at potential export opportunities for the TF-X and its weapons package,” the MBDA representative underlines.

Another issue is ground-based air defence. “MBDA is ready to analyse and identify possible solutions, that should again be a win-win for both parties,” Di Nunzio said. For over 10 years Eurosam and MBDA carried out feasibility analysis, therefore the European will is obvious. “Should the countries find an agreement, then Turkey shall profit of some windows of opportunity,” the MBDA Vice-President for Eurasia says. Currently the B1 NT is in the initial stage of development, while the EC (Enhanced Capabilities) programme has just started.

MBDA is also ready to propose a business case for a system based on its CAMM-ER missile, i.e. for the upgrade of the Perry-class frigates in service with the Turkish Navy; this missile was already selected by the Italian Army and Air Force for GBAD use.

Any half decent journalist should have and would have asked how and why they think that they can do business with Turkey without any blocking from any of the involved countries? What makes them say you know what we will invest the 100k € for the booth and logistics because we will generate business out of it.

Really curious because I don't see the point of it.

Turkey to Sign Deal for Russian S-400 Missiles, RIA Reports

Turkey is in the final stages of negotiating a new deal for an advanced Russian air defense system, RIA Novosti reported Monday, citing Russia’s state-run arms exporter.

A new contract for S-400 Triumph missiles will be signed soon, Rosoboronexport head Alexander Mikheyev said at a briefing, according to the report.

A senior Turkish official declined to confirm RIA’s report.

The U.S. strongly opposes NATO ally Turkey’s purchase of the missile system, which Washington says could be used to collect intelligence on the stealth capabilities of the F-35 fighter jet that Turkey has helped to build and wants to purchase.

Turkey received its first deliveries of the S-400 in 2019 and has refused to scrap the program, despite U.S. sanctions. President Joe Biden and Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the issue on the sidelines of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in June but failed to reach a resolution.

Can someone explain to me why we bought the s-400 when the siper system will be READY in 2023?
Wouldn't it be better if the money transferred to the S-400 was transferred to the domestic air defense system?

Because we can not wait 3-4 years to interfere with the dirty plans of our opponents.

It doesn't depend on the amount, but on the method.

S-400 has ballistic missile defence capabilities and also cover a wide range area with different types of missles. Siper will not be at the level of that system for the time being. We need a decade or so to reach that point. Also Im not going into politics.

S-400: Turkey 'not ready' to sign deal to purchase new supply of Russian missiles

The Turkish official believes Russia had been trying to manage a perception operation by releasing misleading statements against Turkey amid economic woes in the country and with outstanding issues with Washington.

“The Russians are trying to poison [our] relations with the United States,” the official said.

Turkey has yet to fully activate the already purchased S-400 system, in order to prevent any escalation with Washington.

What I think is s 400 is not for france or israel etc , but were fast tracked after that coup attempt .

I don't know why but turkey has fair share of coup , but one thing to note is they always transfer back power to civilian government , seems quite patriotic to me .

But recent attempt failed and many are now knocked down ,so I think turkey may see rise of radicalism in some pockets .

On topic - s400 are standalone system in Turkish arsenal as a chinese weapon may be allowed to be integrated with european ones but russian are no go , especially when the interaction of system will be regular with sensitive equipment .
As a conspiracy theory floated , they might get the signature of whole of turkish arsenal and using a dedicated bug memory , ruskies might get some critical info of western jets .

Roketsan Levent
  • developed to meet close air defence requirement of mainly Turkish type assault boats that has being developed by STM
  • will be effective against supersonic threats too.
  • Levent has flexible design philosophy. Different missile configurations can be fired from same platform
