Bayraktar TB-2 To Be Procured by Poland in Its Gryf UAV Programme?

Mariusz Błaszczak, head of the Polish MoD, posted an enigmatic photograph of a UAV scale model, with a cryptic caption: “Good news coming soon...stay tuned!”. The details of the model point to the proven and successful Turkish TB-2 Bayraktar UCAV.

The model on the photograph reminisces the Turkish design when it comes to the fuselage and wing shape. The Polish Air Force’s checkerboards have replaced the Turkish roundels in the exact same spots. Other details also reminisce the Turkish camouflage scheme, including an illegible designation - probably reading “Bayraktar TB-2”.
The model carries missiles on four hardpoints under the fuselage - two lighter missiles on the external ones, and two heavier ones, on the internal hardpoints. This is a stores layout that is similar to one we have commonly witnessed in the case of the TB-2.
Defence24 announced back in November that the analytical-conceptual phase of the Gryf tactical UAV procurement programme has been finalized at the Armament Inspectorate. Documents on that matter were to be sent to the Polish MoD. Later, unconfirmed rumors were made, regarding the talks between Poland, and the Turkish defence industry, regarding specifically the Bayraktar drones.

The implementation phase of the task pertaining to the acquisition of the tactical medium range UAVs known as GRYF is underway now. The proceedings pursued by the Armament Inspectorate shall be finalized by the conclusion of an agreement, on a date making it possible to accomplish the task in line with the planning documents remaining in force at the MoD. However, ultimately, defining that deadline would depend on the negotiation with the Contractors, covering all of the task implementation aspects, including further specification of the subject of the order.
Mjr Krzysztof Płatek, Armament Inspectorate spokesman (statement made in November 2020)

This is aligned with the enigmatic release issued by the Armament Inspectorate of the Polish MoD that suggested, negotiation had already begun involving the potential contractors who would be willing to deliver the Gryf medium-range tactical UAVs. The Gryf platforms would constitute one of the key elements of the “OBSERWATOR IMINT and Satellite Reconnaissance” Operational Programme. It was announced that the UAVs mentioned here shall have an all-weather intelligence-gathering capability. They were expected to carry guided munitions as well.

It seems that the procurement may be an off-the-shelf one, with the urgent operational requirement and/or essential national security interest being used as a justification here. This shall not be a surprise, given the successful employment of those systems in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, or, earlier on - in Libya. In the latter case, the UAVs are considered to be the main factor that brought General Haftar’s Tripoli offensive to a halt. The drone is also said to have defeated the modern Russian Pantsir systems.

According to the information released during the meeting of the Parliamentary National Defence Committee, back in March 2018, by the Deputy Head of the MoD Wojciech Skurkiewicz, the programme above was to involve the delivery of 6 systems (4 UAVs and a control station in each of the systems) between 2020 and 2022. Another 6 systems could be procured in the unspecified future. During a meeting of the Parliamentary National Defence Committee back in April, Deputy Minister Skurkiewicz was mentioning the planned acquisition of 15 tactical medium-range UAV systems. The quantity could have been reviewed and it could have gone up, also due to the conclusions gathered during the armed conflicts.

Some questions still remain open - ones concerning the deliveries, and the polonization of the Turkish systems. It shall also cover the control elements of the system. One also cannot be certain that the system would ultimately be acquired by the military, at least until detailed information is released by the MoD.
So far, the Bayraktar platforms have been procured by: Libya, Azerbaijan, Qatar, Morocco, and Ukraine.

That would be surprising, even flight date is surprising . I rather expected it to fly in the celebrations of conquest of istanbul and named as Fatih1453.. haha

More logical that Aksungur or T129 to get MKA1919
Name it "T.C. MKA Akinci Bandirma 1919" and should have had it fly from Istanbul to Samsun same route as the ferry.

Well I am against naming it anything like that, because I dont want to see a drone named like that ever being shot down.

Polish Ministry of Defense about 2 and a half hours ago posted this tweet on twitter.

''Minister Mariusz Błaszczak(Polish National Defense Minister): 'We negotiated a contract for the purchase of 4 sets, that is 24 aircraft armed with anti-tank missiles. The first set will be available in #WojskoPolskie in just one year. #Bayraktar'''

I saw this from the reddit user u/mrsytuna in r/TurkeyInConflict subreddit.
Edit: I invited him to the forum too.
Edit 2: Woops, Vergennes beated me to it.

Poland Confirms Procurement of Armed Bayraktar TB2 UAVs from Turkey

22 May 2021, 16:31
Defence24.com

We have negotiated an agreement that would cover procurement of 4 UCAV packages - 24 aircraft armed with anti-tank guided missiles, stated head of the Polish Ministry of Defence Mariusz Błaszczak, referring to the acquisition of the Bayraktar TB2 drones in his interview for Polskie Radio 24. Błaszczak added that Turkish F-16 jets would be deployed to Malbork soon, within the framework of Air Policing duties.

The Head of the MoD added that Poland expects the first UCAV set of 6 aircraft to be delivered next year. He noted that the agreement also covers the logistics and training package, as well as a maintenance offset agreement, with the offset delegated to a “military enterprise”. Błaszczak stated that no Polish company makes UAVs in the class of TB2. Should a similar product be offered by the Polish military industry, the MoD would consider procurement as such.

Bayraktar TB2 is a tactical medium-range armed UCAV that meets the assumptions of the Polish Gryf UAV procurement programme. The project envisages the acquisition of up to 15 sets of aircraft. It is thus possible Turkish drones would be used mainly to achieve the initial capability.

The aircraft’s MTOW is 650 kg, and its wingspan is 12 meters. Its operational ceiling is defined as 6,750 meters, with an operational range of 150 km from the control station. This creates an expansive operational envelope for the system. The drone’s cruise speed is 130 kph. Top speed is said to exceed 220 kph. The UCAV is powered by a single 100 HP Rotax 912 engine with a push-propeller. The aircraft design is specific for the class: compact fuselage with a push propeller. The dual tail is connected with an inverted, V-shaped stabilizer.

The drone uses the 37.5 kg UMTAS ATGMs, 22.5 kg MAM-L loitering munitions, and probably the 70 mm Cirit rockets as the armament. So far, the Bayraktar platforms have been procured by: Libya, Azerbaijan, Qatar, Morocco, and Ukraine. The UCAV has seen combat in Nagorno Karabakh, Syria, and Libya. Błaszczak also recalled that today, an agreement concerning the support vehicles for the Rak self-propelled mortars module (ammunition carriers, repair vehicles) would be signed today.

During the Cafe Armia radio programme Błaszczak added that Turkey would soon join the Baltic Air Policing operation, and the Turkish Air Force’s F-16 Multi Role Combat Aircraft would be stationed at the Polish Malbork AB. This could be interpreted as a signal, suggesting that Ankara is getting involved in the reinforcement of NATO’s Eastern Flank. Recently, the Turkish E-7 AWACS platform conducted a mission in the Romanian airspace, within the framework of NATO operations.

I wonder if they could integrate the Polish Piorun MANPADS on the TB2

An Iraqi MiG-25 shot down a Predator drone performing reconnaissance over the no fly zone in Iraq on 23 December 2002. Predators had been armed with Stingers, and were being used to "bait" Iraqi fighter planes, then run. In this incident, the Predator, with a top speed of 135 mph (117 kn; 217 km/h), and a ceiling of 25,000 ft (7,600 m), could not run from the MiG-25, which has a top speed of 1,900 mph (1,700 kn; 3,100 km/h), and a ceiling of 78,740 ft (24,000 m), so it fired a Stinger missile. The Stinger failed to hit the MIG, possibly because it could not distinguish between the heat signatures of the MIG and the missile it fired. The missile fired by the MiG destroyed the Predator. This was the first time in history a conventional aircraft and a drone had engaged in combat.

I have been aware of this incident for years, which is why I brought the subject up.

They probably could but doubt it would give tb2 more practical value and by my opinion it would be waste of payload and diverting from its main purpose, it would be smarter for them to buy 6 Akincis for customisation and assigning those to varoius support roles.

I actually think Finland and Sweden could make do with uav and ucav as well. Considering both are non NATO, but have extensive cooperation.

TB2 will be useful against Russian proxies but in any real war I suspect Russia will hit 90% of Polish assets in the first day with cruise and ballistic missile strikes.

It took the Americans about 70/80 cruise missiles to destroy 2 buildings in Syria. I think people get a little hyped on this cruise missile business.

Also remember this dogfight was between a pilot who has realtime info on the threat, while drone operator was hundred or thousand miles aways with a delay on the feed, moreover operating in hostile airspacr with no other information.
Poland,in this case will have radar images and operator will have more situational awaraness even more than the counterpart.
