Some news related to Saudi production of Vestel Karayel

During the World Defense Show in Saudi Arabia in early March, two Saudi firms, Intra Defense Technologies and Taqnia Space signed a memorandum of understanding to develop drones with satellite communication capabilities.

“Integration of capabilities to link our UAVs to the satellites were done in cooperation with Taqnia Space, and test flights of Haboob UAV after the integration was successful and the drone was able to fly 200 km beyond line of sight due to satellite linking through its antenna,” director of Technology and Engineering Solutions, Asim Qureshi told Breaking Defense.

The Haboob, is a Saudi unmanned aerial vehicle, and it is a locally-built derivative of the Turkish drone Vestel Karayel-SU.

In this account which is the arabic version of TRT .. they say that akinci will uses pd 225 engine before the end of 2022
If I’m reading that right the output is 225 horsepower which is half the output of the Ukrainian engine. How is that gonna work?

Correct me if I’m wrong.

edit: takeoff output is 450 horsepower but cruise output is 280 hp if I’m reading the right source.

Simple. It will take off with less load but will stay in the air more longer. Instead of bombardment and attack missions, it will perform observation and intelligence missions.

Piston engines are different from turbine engines .. its not a substitute but a separate variant called akinci c .. piston engines allow for longer endurance hours .. u cant reach 50 hours flight with a turbine engines

The thing with jet engines they make high power in a small package. However, they lose it at altitude like atmospheric piston engine.
Engines like pd222 and pd170 has the turbocharger which can compansate loss of air density by increasing pressure. If pd170 is making 130hp at 30kft as stated, then you really cannot imagine how output power difference gets very close to the ai450 at 30kft.

However, i expect that akinci with pd series motor became a competitor to aksungur in terms of payload and capabilites which does not seems okay to me unless you consider it as export variant. Can someone enlighten me about the benefits over aksungur?

Exactly! There is hardly any significant benefit over Aksungur to have Akinci with piston engines. This is a drone specifically designed to operate at high altitudes with powerful turboprop engines carrying over 1300kg of payload. (That is why Selcuk Bayraktar was looking for 1000hp engines for it) No matter what you do, it will never have the long endurance capability of Aksungur, just like Aksungur can never have the very high altitude flight and heavy payload capacities of Akinci.
I see integration efforts of a piston engine like pd222 as a way to make this drone still operational in the face of lack of it’s intended turboprop engine supply. Also if a country chose to invest in these drones it creates a synergy to have a longer endurance version of the same drone with piston engines, saving investing in two different drones.

Regardless we need piston engines up to 450hp where piston engines start becoming so heavy that their advantages against turbines don't justify using them.

İbrahim Sünnetçi;
These images are not new, we can find the opportunity to share good information about this and other new products of Vestel Defense next week, after the demo in Hungary, which is almost a year old.

I am very disappointed.
We have waited for years and they are showing us a Harpy clone. Why no EO ? They had the capability to do that.

Maybe this is just the anti-radiation variant, as stated by the post.

Yes but at the start it should've been with EO. With EO it can do both missions. And we saw what Harop's did in Karabakh, they were very useful to destroy radars and other vehicles. Kargı will stick to a single mission now.
