After negotiations, the Russian Federation announced differences with NATO
Russia and NATO discussed all the factors influencing the degradation of European security, Grushko said.
Russia and NATO at a meeting on Wednesday, January 12, discussed a number of factors that, in the opinion of the Russian Federation, affect the degradation of European security. This was stated by Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Alexander Grushko.
"Today's meeting was devoted precisely to the analysis of all the factors that affect the degradation of European security, which we have observed in recent years," he said.
The Russian diplomat once again stated that the process of NATO expansion carries unacceptable risks, which Moscow will counter.
“The second factor that seriously affects the deterioration of security in Europe is the process of expanding the alliance. Let me remind you that in 1997 only one country that had a common border with the Russian Federation was knocking on the door of NATO, this is Poland. Today NATO includes many states and their territories are obviously used to project power in the direction of Russia from various geographic directions and onto strategic depths, "Grushko said.
He said that Russia honestly, directly and "without politically correct formulas" pointed out to NATO at the talks the possible consequences for European security in the event of a further deterioration of the situation.
"We pointed out very honestly, bluntly, without trying to go around corners, using any politically correct formulas, that a further slide in the situation could lead to the most unpredictable and most difficult consequences for European security," he said.
"It also seriously degrades our security and creates unacceptable risks for it, which we will counter," he added.
According to him, the negotiations revealed a large number of discrepancies on fundamental issues.
Grushko also said that if NATO goes for containment, the Russian Federation will go for counter-deterrence.
According to him, Russia's proposals to NATO are of a complex nature, all elements are interconnected.
Grushko said that NATO should provide Russia with legal guarantees of non-expansion to the east.
In addition, the Russian Federation expressed concern about the desire of NATO countries to lower the ceiling on the use of nuclear weapons.
"In their military development, the United States and its allies are trying to achieve superiority in all operating environments: land, air and sea. Now space and cyberspace, in all possible theaters of military operations. Conceptually, operationally and technically, the ceiling for the use of nuclear weapons is being lowered. We see that in the scenario of various exercises a nuclear component is introduced, this also causes our most serious concern, "Grushko said.
In general, he called the past talks "a heart-to-heart talk." At the same time, he said that NATO should accept the role of the Russian Federation as a country that guarantees peace in the Euro-Atlantic space if the alliance wants to cooperate.
According to Grushko, Russia expects to get out of the crisis situation in relations with NATO on the basis of a balance of interests.
In turn, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said that relations between Russia and NATO are at a critically low level.
"Russian-NATO relations are at a critically low level. This is happening against the background of global instability, the terrorist threat, the deployment of another arms race, as well as the complete degradation of the security architecture in Europe," he said.
According to him, the Russian side has repeatedly offered NATO to take measures to de-escalate the situation, but the initiatives were ignored.
Earlier, Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke about the results of the meeting of the Russian Federation and NATO. In particular, he said that Russia was denied its demand for Ukraine's non-admission to the Alliance.
