Yes, Russia did suddenly attack Ukraine. If by power struggles you mean Ukrainians chose, surprise, surprise, the EU and the opportunity to become a functional country instead of a shithole like Russia, sure. Strong nations will always invade the weak.
Thats why the USA steamrolled Iraq and Afgahnistan while Russia steamrolled Chechnya and Georgia.
I always said this before. Russia invaded Ukraine as they believed Ukraine was weak and ripe for the taking. Ukrainians were no pushovers they are fighting back and rolling back Russian gains. Also remember the Ukrainians lost Crimea without firing a bullet and a chunk of Donbass. Everybody thought the Ukrainians will fold and buckle and how wrong we were proven. Good on the Ukrainians for fighting back they have every right to fight back against an invasion force.
