The Biggest Problem With Ukraine’s M-1 Tanks: They Don’t Like Staying Dirty

The biggest problem with Ukraine’s new fleet of 31 American-made M-1 Abrams tanks isn’t the tanks’ 1,500-horsepower turbine engines. Not really.

No, it’s the filters in the engines’ intakes. The filters keep dirt and debris from fouling and wrecking an M-1’s delicate—but powerful—engine. They require constant cleaning.

If an Abrams’ four-person crew neglects to clean its tank’s filters every 12 hours or so, it might so badly damage the engine that the battalion has no choice but to remove the engine, and potentially the transmission, and ship it away for a lengthy overhaul.

That would remove one of Ukraine’s few M-1s from the battlefield as surely as a Russian mine or missile might do. Deep maintenance of Ukrainian Abrams takes place in Poland.

The 68-ton M-1A1SAs that Ukraine operates are thirsty machines. In the weeks before the administration of U.S. president Joe Biden pledged the M-1 to Ukraine, early this year, many pundits and even some officials worried aloud over the tank’s fuel requirements.

Laura Cooper, a U.S. deputy defense secretary, called the Abrams “a gas-guzzler.”

It’s true an M-1 typically travels just .6 miles per gallon of fuel. But its turbine is flexible if not terribly efficient. The U.S. Army feeds its M-1s jet fuel, but other armies pour cheaper diesel into their Abrams. The Australian army, for one.

There are no indications swapping jet fuel for diesel significantly weighs on the M-1’s performance. So there’s every reason to believe the Ukrainian army will keep things simple and fuel up its Abrams with the same diesel its other tank types burn.

No, it’s the Abrams’ filters that might prove to be the biggest headaches for Ukrainian troops. Twice a day, an M-1 crew must rev its tank’s engine to high revolutions-per-minute in order to trigger a pulse-jet system that blasts air out of the tank rather than into it, shooting dust and debris from the back grille.

That keeps the filters clean across lengthy deployments. Before the Americans added the pulse-jet system to the M-1, in the early 2000s, tank crews—especially those fighting in the desert—openly complained about their vehicles’ reliability.

“Army officials are aware of the problems with high fuel consumption, unreliable fuel pumps and sand-ingestion,” the U.S. Government Accountability Office reported in 1992. “They are working on solutions.”

The solution to the sand-ingestion problem was the twice-a-day pulse-jet cleaning process. It works just fine, as long as crews rigorously adhere to its schedule. Even when they’re getting shot at.

"All those things can be taught to the crew, but if ever they make a mistake—and they will—it blows a million-dollar engine that can't be repaired in the field," Mark Hertling, a retired U.S. Army general, told The Kyiv Independent.

Not a big problem M1 Abrams can run under the water and Ukraine has a lot of lakes and rivers.

Watch till the end :)

High level counter attack from Ukraine army.
What happened on 29.11.2023

a ruzzian FPV done was send to combat mission. It happened that Ukraine army able to intercept this ruzzian FPV drone and Ukraine build and used system hacked ruzzian drone system and start to receive all camera stream and also camera history.
Ukraine army about to use this data.
They found the name of ruzzian drone unit "Sudny Den".
They found drone unit main HQ and this HQ is one of main communication HUB.

All information data was immediately transferred to the air reconnaissance of the 36th Brigade of Ukraine army unit
36th unit analyzed in detail ruzzian HQ photos, videos taken from ruzzian drone. They able to pinpoint building where ruzzian unit is.
Then plan for counter attack was made and executed :D
Result is in the video

Footage of the battle and the first defeat of the Ukrainian Leopard 1A5 tank made in Germany have been published. The battle episode was filmed in the Kupyansk area; the tank was in service with the 44th mechanized brigade of the Ukrainian Army. The tank was not directly hit; the tank was probably damaged by a nearby artillery shell explosion, after which the crew abandoned it. The German Leopard 1A5 tank is a modernization of the first Leopard-1 tank, created in 1987. The tank is very vulnerable as it has thin armor. The thickness of the frontal armor of the tank is up to 70 mm, the turret armor is up to 65 mm, the sides of the tank have armor 35-45 mm thick. Data on the first versions of Leopard 1 tanks.

How is nato going to recover from this....

These tanks worked great in dirty sandy conditions of afghanistan and Iraq I doubt there will be problems.

❗️Ukraine will produce air defense systems with a range of more than 100 km, such as the Koral air defense system, - the Ministry of Defense.

Ukraine’s security service blew up a railway connection linking Russia to China, in a clandestine strike carried out deep into enemy territory, with pro-Kremlin media reporting that investigators have opened a criminal case into a “terrorist attack.”
The SBU set off several explosions inside the Severomuysky tunnel of the Baikal-Amur highway in Buryatia, located some 6,000 kilometers east of Ukraine, a senior Ukrainian official with direct knowledge of the operation told POLITICO.
“This is the only serious railway connection between the Russian Federation and China. And currently, this route, which Russia uses, including for military supplies, is paralyzed,” the official said.

Four explosive devices went off while a cargo train was moving inside the tunnel. “Now the (Russian) Federal Security Service is working on the spot, the railway workers are unsuccessfully trying to minimize the consequences of the SBU special operation,” the Ukrainian official added.

Ukraine’s security service has not publicly confirmed the attack. Russia has also so far not confirmed the sabotage.

“On the Itikit — Okusykan stretch in Buryatia, while driving through the tunnel, the locomotive crew of the cargo train noticed smoke from one of the diesel fuel tanks. The train was stopped, and two fire extinguishing trains were sent from nearby towns to help. The movement of trains was not interrupted, it was organized along a bypass section with a slight increase in travel time,” Russia’s state railroad company RZHD said in a statement on Thursday.

This story has been updated with additional reporting.

Could this really piss off China and now make them fully support Russia?

Slowly but surely the UMPK glide kit is now integrated with Su-24M

They should integrate one with the Su-25

Yup I'm aware of that,

Russians are late in the PGM game to the point that their neighbor has all democratized the use of PGM. Had the Russians swallowed their ego and admitted that they were behind in fielding PGMs the war would not be like this and the Su-25 would have been as useful as their A-10 counterpart in CAS mission. Until now, the Russians treated their Su-25 as a faster version of the Il-2 from WW2.

Despite the fact that the Russian Strela-10 air defense system was developed in 1974, and in 2014 it was upgraded to the Strela-10MN version of the air defense system, as it turned out, this air defense system can operate quite effectively against small-sized targets. The air defense system can operate covertly and has 8 9M333 missiles; the complex is capable of hitting targets at a range of up to 5000 meters and an altitude of 3500 meters. The 9K35M air defense missile system is valued for its simplicity and reliability. The story of a Russian operator about the effectiveness of the Strela-10MN air defense system in Ukraine.

There's no real thread suited for this but I think we're seeing the setting sun for Wagner PMC (not Russian mercenaries as a whole).

There's growing info that Wagner's 'partners' in Africa (CAR) are reviewing/rethinking about Wagner

“They sold us a win-win partnership, but that relationship hasn’t given us so much,” one of the Central African government officials said about Wagner, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss relations with the group.

In Syria, they had retreated almost completely on the front where it matters, Badia and its surrounding oil fields.

That makes Syria their latest failure in COIN after Mozambique. There's still Mali, where they recently captured Kidal, but just like in Syria and Mozambique it remains to be seen what can Wagner do after securing land

Current situation for my favorite merc group:

  • Failed in Syria ✅
  • Failed in Mozambique ✅
  • Sure as hell will no longer be deployed in any significant way in Ukraine
  • Still fighting in Mali and Niger (?)

This news is a few days old but France 🇫🇷 will send an additional 6 CAESAR 155mm howitzers to Ukraine.

Nexter is also now producing 12 CAESAR howitzers per month and is in the midst of expanding the production line to produce 16-18 units per month. France recently freed up 200 million Euros for Ukraine to spend on French made weapons and they will free up more in 2024, so expect more CAESAR howitizers to be announced in the coming months as they've been one of Ukraine's most dependable weapons in the war to this point.
