Are things about to get much more difficult financially for Russia? I guess Putin will be selling more gold soon. Perhaps not a bad time to sell - if buyers do not squeeze enormous discounts out of him.

Sweden 🇸🇪 and Denmark 🇩🇰 announced a joint air defense package for Ukraine today valued at $250 million usd. The package consists of of the following:

- 1× Batallion of Tridon MK2 Air Defense Systems.
- SAAB Giraffe 1X Air Defense RADARS
- Air Defense Command and Control Vehicles

Tridon MK2 is a truck mounted, mobile air defense system featuring a 40mm air defense cannon and smart ammunition with a range if 13km. The system is highly accurate and designed to intercept attack drones and cruise missiles.

These are the types of air defense packages that Ukraine needs. Not 3-4 units, rather, entire battalions, with accurate, cost effective ammunition, ideally truck mounted for quick, flexible deployability.

Rare footage of the Russian FPV drone "Prince Vandal of Novgorod" and the kamikaze drone "Lancet-51" striking a camouflaged Ukrainian artillery piece of an unknown model. The location of the footage is unknown. Judging by the video, the operator of the "Lancet-51" drone appears to be more efficient.

A combat sequence of the Russian T-90M "Proryv" tank in the Konstantinovka sector. In the video, the T-90M "Proryv" tank fires ballistic trajectories with high-explosive fragmentation rounds at Ukrainian army positions and a dugout at a range of 8 kilometers. It's worth noting that tank battles in Ukraine and the Donbas no longer exist.

The $105 Billion usd loan for Ukraine 🇺🇦 has now been fully agreed to by EU 🇪🇺 envoys and will now be sent to EU Parliament for procedural approval. The full text of the bill has not yet been released, but key components have leaked and are as follows.

1. The loan will be released in installments over a period of two years. Ukraine will only have to repay the loan if Russia is forced to pay war reparations. Otherwise, loan participants will foot the bill.

2. The first installment of the loan will be released in April, 2026. The loan is subject to tight scrutiny and regulation. If there isn't continued efforts to solve the corruption problem in Ukraine the loan increments can be paused at any time.

3. 2/3 (66%) of the funds will be used for military purchases. 1/3 (33%) of the funds will be used to bolster Ukraine's Federal budgets in 2026 and 2027.

4. The debt will be split proportionately between EU members states and allies who opt in, with Hungary 🇭🇺, Slovakia 🇸🇰 and the Czech Republic 🇨🇿 absolved from any debt responsibility. Individual EU countries can continue to fund Ukraine's military efforts using their own national budgets, on top of the broad loan.

5. Attempts to purchase weapons must first take place in Ukraine, the European Union, Switzerland 🇨🇭, Norway 🇳🇴, Iceland 🇮🇸 and Liechtenstein 🇱🇮 . There is a special carve out to allow the purchase of weapons from the United States 🇺🇸that Europe is not capable of producing, or not capable of providing in a reasonable period of time.

6. EU allies such as Britain 🇬🇧, Canada 🇨🇦, Japan 🇯🇵 and South Korea 🇰🇷 can also benefit from weapons purchases from their respective defense industries, however, they must first agree to opt in to a "fair and proportionate" percentage of the loan debt / interest in order to benefit from the funds being spent in their respective countries.

The "repayment" is that Ukrainian men and women die at the front, while missiles and drones are lobbed into their cities, while the Russian war machine is severely weakened at no cost in blood to Europe.

The Europeans are basically financing the war while collectively rebuilding their military strength to the tune of some $1.2 Trillion usd between 2025-2032. $105 Billion usd is peanuts compared to what they're spending on Europe's collective defense and it's virtually an irrelevant sum of money compared to what they spent over 3 years of the Covid-19 response.

Russia will leave this war with a significantly damaged economy, the vaunted remnants of the Soviet war arsenal shattered, the myth of Russian supremacy in the continent shattered and a millions of young men killed and wounded, from a population that is already in fast decline. They also will not be in position to exert their will in elections throughout Eastern Europe and they'll be hard pressed to continue to attempt territorial expansion.

$105 Billion usd is peanuts for the EU to gain powerful leverage and regional dominance over their largest geopolitical adversary. Every month that Ukraine remains in the fight is another 20,000-30,000 dead or severely wounded Russians. It's also the continued hollowing out of the Soviet stockpiles leftover from the Cold War. Russia is forced to sell off it's vast strategic reserves to fund the war and they're raising money from domestic banks at interest rates that are going to cripple their military funding into the future, while damaging their domestic social services.

If you can't see how cheap and valuable this investment for Europe is in the grand scheme of things, I can't help you. Europe will have given Ukraine approximately $350-400 Billion usd by the conclusion of 2027, helping fund 5 years of the war. During that same 5 years the EU will have a combined GDP of nearly $100 Trillion usd, meaning that the war will cost Europe roughly 0.05% of it's GDP over that period. Virtually nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Poland 🇵🇱 announced a new $56 million usd military aid package for Ukraine today. The exact contents of the package were not discussed, however, it will consist of armored combat vehicles which are likely to be BWP-1 IFVs, PT-91 Twardy MBTs and / or KTO Rosomak IFVs, all of which Poland has donated to Ukraine in previous packages.

Poland also reaffirmed it's commitment to send the remainder of it's Mig-29 aircraft to Ukraine when the Ukrainians are ready to accept them. Poland has 11 Mig-29s that will be ready for transfer in two batches during 2026.

Finland 🇫🇮 also announced a new $51 million usd military aid package for Ukraine today. Per custom, Finland has not released the contents of the package, although the Government hinted at the fact that it will come from the Finnish defense industry.

Note that both of these packages, similar to the packages announced earlier this week by Denmark 🇩🇰 and Sweden 🇸🇪 are coming directly from the budgets of these nations and ARE NOT not part of the European Union's $105 Billion usd loan to Ukraine.

55,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed in war with Russia, Zelensky says

Sarah Rainsford,Eastern and Southern Europe correspondent, Kyivand
Paulin Kola

The number of Ukrainian soldiers killed on the battlefield in the four years of war with Russia is 55,000, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

Zelensky announced the figure in an interview with France 2 TV on Wednesday. Additionally, a large number of people are considered officially missing, he said.

While both Kyiv and Moscow have regularly published estimates of the other side's losses, they have been reluctant to detail their own. However, the BBC has confirmed the names of almost 160,000 people killed fighting on Russia's side in Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump has been leading efforts to end the war that began with Russia's full-scale invasion of its neighbour on 22 February 2022.

Special US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, held talks with Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, for a second day on Thursday in an effort to try and thrash out the details of the US-proposed peace deal.

It was the second such trilateral meeting and the talks had been "detailed and productive", Steve Witkoff wrote on X, but "significant work remains".

The most difficult issue is territory, with Russia demanding that Ukraine cedes the rest of the eastern industrial region of Donbas that Moscow does not currently control.

Zelensky said the talks had not been easy, and Ukraine would remain "as constructive as possible", but wanted "faster results".

Trump often says thousands of Ukrainians and Russians die unnecessarily every week. Western intelligence agencies also publish estimates, which are impossible to verify.

The last time Zelensky gave an update on Ukraine's casualties was in December 2024, when he put deaths at 43,000.

In his interview with French television, he said: "In Ukraine, officially the number of soldiers killed on the battlefield - either professionals or those conscripted - is 55,000."

The official number of dead cited by Zelensky is considerably lower than Ukraine's total losses. As he said himself, "a large number of people" are registered as missing.

As of six months ago, Ukraine's interior ministry had recorded more than 70,000 people as officially missing - both soldiers and civilians - but the breakdown is never given.

The true figure may be higher - information about the number of dead is highly sensitive and affects morale.

Across Ukraine, military graves are prominent in all cemeteries - marked with blue and yellow national flags. They often have an image of the soldier in uniform engraved on the headstones.

We have also met mothers still searching for their sons, who never returned from battle.

Often, they cling to hope that the men are prisoners of war, captured and held in Russia somewhere but not on any official lists.

Access to Russian prisons for organisations like the Red Cross is highly restricted.

The alternative is that the missing men have been killed and their bodies not recovered from territory now controlled by Russia, or that their remains have not yet been identified using DNA testing.

Every so often, the two countries arrange an exchange of bodies - in addition to swapping prisoners of war - but there has been nothing at all since last August.

Another agreement on swapping prisoners was reached in the Abu Dhabi talks, Witkoff announced. It involved the exchange of 314 prisoners - "the first such exchange in five months", he said.

"While significant work remains, steps like this demonstrate that sustained diplomatic engagement is delivering tangible results and advancing efforts to end the war in Ukraine," Witkoff added.

Zelensky confirmed 157 Ukrainians were released, and vowed to continue work so everyone was returned home. Russia's ministry of defence also showed pictures of its soldiers after they had been released by the Ukrainians.

At the end of the talks, the US European Command issued a statement saying the US and Russia had agreed to re-establish high-level military-to-military dialogue, which was suspended in the autumn of 2021.

"This channel will provide a consistent military-to-military contact as the parties continue to work towards a lasting peace," the statement said.

The Abu Dhabi talks began as Russia renewed attacks on Ukraine after a week-long pause that Trump had asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to observe as a fierce cold swept Ukraine.

It has been targeting the country's energy sector, leaving thousands without power and heating as temperatures dropped to -20C (-4F)".

I wanted to take a look at what air defense systems are set to arrive in Ukraine throughout the course of 2026, as Ukraine attempts to bolster it's air defense network, while simultaneously finding cheaper, more efficient methods of intercepting Russian drones and cruise missiles, allowing them to save their tier 1 air defense interceptors for Russia's most capable ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

Of course I expect additional purchase announcements after the EU'S $105 Billion usd loan starts flowing in April, but as of now, Ukraine will receive the following systems over the course of 2026:

Belgium (Cerberus XL) 🇧🇪: gifted Ukraine 20 Cerberus Air Defense Systems. The system is designed to identity and track UAS / UAV targets and work with a variety of integrated kenetic systems for the efficient elimination of threats. The package was announced in 2025, with delivery dates scheduled throughout 2026.

Germany (IRIS-T SLS / SLM)🇩🇪: there continues to be ongoing deliveries of IRIS-T Air Defense Systems in two variants for Ukraine. Germany and Norway have co-financed 16 SLM variants, 9 of which have been delivered, with 4 more scheduled to be delivered throughout 2026. Meanwhile, of the 24 SLS variant that have been pledged, 16 have arrived in Ukraine and 4 more are scheduled to arrive during 2026. These systems are complimented by ongoing deliveries of TRML-4D Air Defense Radars and hundreds of IRIS-T missiles on an annual basis.

Germany (Skyranger 35) 🇩🇪: these drones killers, built on leopard 1 chasis, were ordered from Rheinmetall by Germany, for Ukraine in 2025 in an undisclosed quantity valued in the hundreds of millions of usd. It's believed that Ukraine will receive 10-20 units and the first systems will arrive at some stage in 2026. Skyranger 35 will serve as a much more advanced version of the Gepard Air Defense Systems that Ukraine received from Germany in 2022 and 2023.

Britain (Gravehawk) 🇬🇧: a joint initiative between Britain and Denmark 🇩🇰 will see Ukraine receiver 15 Gravehawk Air Defense Systems, following the 2 test models that arrived in 2025. Gravehawk is a truck launched ground-to-air medium range system that can intercept drones and cruise missiles. The system has been adapted to fire Soviet era R-73 missiles that Ukraine and other Eastern European countries have in large supply. The missiles are now obsolete in an air-to-air role for Ukraine's Mig-29s, but are still extremely valuable repurposed as GBAD.

Britain (Martlett LLM) 🇬🇧: a large contract was signed for the production of 5000 Martlett multi-purpose missiles at the Thales factory in Ireland 🇮🇪. These short range missiles are being used by Ukraine to fire from ground based vehicle launchers for the purpose of air defense against drones. Martlett has proven extremely accurate and Ukraine wants as many as it can get. The 5000 unit order was expected to take multiple years to deliver, with an initial delivery of 650 units delivered in late 2025 and several thousand more units set to arrive in stages throughout 2026 and 2027. An option for an additional 2000 units is available should Britain and Ukraine decide to fill it.

Sweden 🇸🇪 (Tridon MK2): in a joint project with Denmark, Sweden is has purchased an air defense battalion worth of truck mounted Tridon MK2 air defense systems for Ukraine in a package valued at $250 million usd. The system is truck mounted and uses a 40mm auto-cannon and smart munition as a powerful tool capable of intercepting drones and cruise missiles. The exact number of systems set to be delivered is unknown, however, Ukraine will begin receiving them throughout the back half of 2026 along with Giraffe variant air defense Radars.

USA (Multiple) 🇺🇸: while the United States is no longer paying for Ukrainian military aid, it will continue to provide valuable air defense equioment to Ukraine via two mechanisms. Through PURL, Ukrainian allies will buy air defense interceptors such as Patriot PAC-2/3, AIM-9M/X, AIM-7, AIM-120, Hellfire, Stinger, Hydra-70 and APKWS for Ukraine's American made air defense systems and airborne air defense platforms (F-16s). Ukraine will also be able to buy significant quantities of these missiles and rockets, as well as C-UAS systems directly from American industry through a carveout in the $105 Billion loan Europe is giving Ukraine that will allow them to purchase weapons from the Americans that are not available in Europe.

Ruslan Pukhov, director of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies and one of Russia's leading analysts, discusses the revolution in the use of drones in the war in Ukraine

What is the "drone revolution"?

"Drones, with their sensors, are primarily the "tip" of a communications system that enables the transmission of large volumes of information (including video) in real time to multiple "consumers."

Thanks to this communication system, from the drone's sensors to the commander (even at the lowest tactical level), the "fog of war" has completely disappeared. This "fog" has been a key factor in warfare for millennia: the best commanders of various eras were renowned for their ability to anticipate enemy actions without knowing their intentions. Now, thousands of drones over the battlefield and rear areas detect all enemy activity and report them to commanders in real time.

The next logical step is to equip drones with munitions for striking the enemy immediately upon detection, reducing the gap between reconnaissance and destruction to zero.

Less advanced armies have acquired reconnaissance assets and millions of precision-guided weapons. In the future, commanders at various levels, with the entire battlefield transparently visible in their sector, will be able to simply select the means of destruction for any detected target. Anything that is noticed will be immediately destroyed. In certain areas of the front, this is already a reality.
Already now in Ukraine, at the front and in the rear (to a depth of 10-15 kilometers), it is impossible to concentrate forces and assets—something that was previously (for centuries!) considered the foundation of operational art. This principle of warfare has been replaced by camouflage and dispersal—of troops, weapons, headquarters, ammunition depots, etc.

Mechanized breakthroughs into the depths of the enemy's defenses, which were the foundation of past wars, are now impossible—until one side achieves absolute drone superiority over the battlefield and rear areas.
Drones have already taken over the skies (albeit only near land), threaten conventional fleets at sea, and, in the future, will become the backbone of ground forces at the front.

Integration of artificial intelligence, satellite reconnaissance, and satellite communications into the system will allow drones to strike at almost any depth.

Anyone who wants to win the future war of post-industrial societies must first suppress the enemy's drones and establish the dominance of their own unmanned vehicles in the air and on the ground..."

Denmark 🇩🇰 has now passed the new 3.5% of gdp NATO target for 2026. In order to reach those levels they will provide Ukraine with $1.95 Billion usd worth of military aid this year, on top of their share to the $105 Billion usd loan the EU is extending Ukraine starting in April

Meanwhile, Canada 🇨🇦 and Japan 🇯🇵, in concert with the World Bank, have have officially released a $691 million usd tranche of financial support for Ukraine's Federal budget. These sorely needed funds will enable Ukraine to keep their government fully funded while they spend more than record levels (more than $40 Billion usd) on their own defensive war effort.
