The soldiers reached the strongpoint not inside the BMP, but on its roof. Since the armor offered no protection, they probably should have taken a bus🫢

There are too many of them, and railways are quickly repaired. Military equipment is more often transported on regular roads.

...the head of Sweden's Military Intelligence and Security Service, Thomas Nilson, now says that Russia will struggle to continue to finance its own invasion of Ukraine as the war with Kyiv enters its fifth year, leading to a 'financial disaster'.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Nilson says that Russia is 'living on borrowed time', and explains that the country's economy can only end in one of two scenarios: 'Prolonged decline or a shock. Either way, they continue their downward spiral towards financial disaster.'

'It's not a sustainable growth model to produce material for the war that is then destroyed on the battlefield,' he says, highlighting that Russia's economic faults have spread to the defence sector.

Nilson also believes that Russia is manipulating data to make Ukraine's allies believe that Russia is doing better than it is economically, despite the country being on the brink of a financial crisis.

The first footage has emerged of one of the Ukrainian army's underground bases. The exact location has not been disclosed, but the base is used by airborne units. The underground base is quite large, with corridors at least 400 meters long. It can accommodate up to six vehicles, including trucks. The base has a kitchen, storage areas, and other utility rooms. A permanent kennel for the unit's dog has also been installed on the base grounds. Warning signs have been posted on the pillars supporting the vaults, warning that using mobile phones may attract the attention of bombers.

With Orban out of the way the European Union will ratify the $105 Billion usd loan for Ukraine tomorrow after EU Foreign Ministers signed off on it today. The loan will consist of approximately $70 Billion usd worth of military funding and $35 Billion usd worth of macro financial funding to support Ukraine's budget. The loan covers 66% of Ukraine's military and budget related needs in 2026 and 2027 will begin to be distributed in May. The remaining funds will be covered by a combination of Ukraine , Norway , Britain , Canada , Japan and Australia , with additional avenues of funding from sources such as the IMF and 3rd party military sales.

In related news, today the G7 announced that all Ukrainian state debt that to the G7 requiring repayment in 2026 has been pushed back to 2030. G7 creditors have agreed to put a 4 year moratorium the on debt owed by Ukraine, in order to allow the Ukrainians maximum financial flexibility and to direct all funds domestically for during and in the immediate aftermath of the war.

A British aircraft has shot down a Russian drone over Ukrainian territory for the first time.

On the night of April 25, 2026, a Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 became the first NATO aircraft to shoot down a Russian attack drone over Ukrainian territory – an event that has been officially confirmed.
The aircraft, part of the combined British contingent of the NATO Air Policing mission at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, was scrambled. The pilot spotted the Russian drone approximately 1.5-2 km from the Romanian-Ukrainian border.
The UK Ministry of Defence and NATO command confirmed the drone's use in combat, noting that this is the first officially documented instance of an Alliance aircraft shooting down a Russian drone over Ukraine as part of the defense of its eastern flank.

The drones struck Ukrainian military-industrial facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk region, including an oil depot, a gas station, and an ammunition depot. An Iskander missile also struck. It's worth noting that many videos of drone strikes are missing, as publishing such information is prohibited in Ukraine.

According to Zelensky three unamed countries have agreed to contribute $500 million usd for a PURL package from the USA in the month of May. The package is expected to consist of air defense missiles as well as other priority weapons that only USA can offer.

The three countries involved in funding the package are expected to be announced in the coming week.

It is important to note that while PURL funding has consistently come through to purchase the weapons that Ukraine most needs, there continues to be a funding shortfall in the sense that USA is willing to sell Ukraine's allies approximately $15 billion usd worth of weapons in 2027 yet we are only on track to see roughly half those funds be raised this year, meaning that Ukraine will receive roughly $7.5 Billion usd less worth of weapons than it otherwise could.

On Friday, the central bank slashed the benchmark interest rate again, marking the fifth straight half-point reduction, to bring it down to 14.5%.

“A significant risk from external conditions is the situation in the Middle East,” Governor Elvira Nabiullina said at a briefing. “If the conflict drags on, the negative effects on the Russian economy will grow.”

I thought lifting sanctions on Russian crude stored on the high seas would result in a boost in Russian GDP for a couple of months. I think it will...but I guess that Nabiullina sees the negative effects of the Iran situation more worthy of note.

So, perhaps a good month or two for GDP figures and then a return to year on year monthly growth figures declining - with a steep decline in those figures to come in Mar/Apr 2027.

I wonder if anyone in the ministry responsible for the economy has dared let Putin know (a) how bad things really are (b) how bad things are forecast to become. Not good to be a messenger bringing bad news to the emperor, is it?
