China humiliated the biggest armed forces in the world with one balloon. I'm sure we will soon get dozens of articles by pentagon connected "journalists" how this is nothing to be bothered about and actually how in reality the US didn't get humiliated.

Question: What does China strategically gain from one balloon carrying a probably limited amount of espionage equipment over continental America?

I always assumed that satellites made this kind of operation obsolete?

The quality of the data you collect will be improved when your ISR asset files closer to earth. "Weather" balloons are a cheap way to collect sub-meter resolution footage. They can also be fashioned to act as datalink relays.
