Why such old ships(at least 50 years old)?
Vietnam has enough money to buy new ones,i dont get it?
Those ships will be used for ramming and attacking with water cannons against CN guard ships, not just for patrolling, so we will use all kind of ships against CN as long as the ships still can move ^^.

Beside, its a sign of US's support to VN against CN, too.

Mauzer put out another Vietnam themed video. This time ending on ""The Ballad of Ho Chi Minh - French Version"

At 3.20 mark, I just realised there is Indian flag next to Viet flag.
I wonder if an Indian dignitary was visiting Vietnam at the time. @Viva_vietnamm ?

Likely PM Nehru's visit in 1954 I think, one of first world leaders to visit Vietnam after the Dien Bien Phu victory.

He highly regarded President Ho Chi Minh and they were very friendly with each other.

In 1961, PM Nehru when visiting US, strongly advised them to "stay out" of Vietnam....but they didn't listen.

Nehru told his foreign secretary to again tell the US:
"Tell them, tell them not to go into Vietnam. They will be bogged down and they will never be able to get out."

It is history now, but it set strong bedrock for India - Vietnam relations today which are excellent and getting better each year!

The boats were given by Singh at a ceremony in the Hong Ha shipyard amid increasing maritime security cooperation between the two sides.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday handed over to Vietnam 12 high-speed guard boats built under a USD 100 million Line of Credit granted to the Southeast Asian country by India.

The boats were given by Singh at a ceremony in the Hong Ha shipyard amid increasing maritime security cooperation between the two sides to deal with Beijing's increasing military assertiveness in the South China Sea region.

The defence minister is on a three-day visit to Vietnam from June 8 to 10.

"It gives me great pleasure to join this historic ceremony marking the successful completion of the project to build 12 high-speed guard boats under the USD 100 million defence Line of Credit by India," he said at the event

The initial five boats were manufactured at the L&T Shipyard in India and the remaining seven were built in the Hong Ha shipyard.

"I am confident that this will be a precursor to many more cooperative defence projects between India and Vietnam," Singh said.

"This project is a glowing example of our 'Make in India -- Make for the World' mission," he added.

The defence minister said India would be "greatly pleased" if "close friends like Vietnam" become part of the country's transformation in the defence manufacturing sector.

He said the successful completion of the project, notwithstanding the COVID-19 pandemic, is a reflection of the commitment and professional excellence of the Indian defence manufacturing sector as also the Hong Ha shipyard.

In his address, Singh asserted that the Indian defence industry has substantially increased its capabilities under the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He stressed that the objective is to build a domestic industry in order to make India a defence manufacturing hub that not only caters to domestic needs but also fulfils international requirements.

India and Vietnam on Wednesday inked a vision document to further broad-base the "scope and scale" of defence ties by 2030 and sealed a logistics support pact to allow their militaries to use each other's bases for repair and replenishment of supplies.

The documents were signed after Singh and his Vietnamese counterpart General Phan Van Giang held "fruitful" talks.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on mutual logistics support is the first such major agreement that Vietnam has signed with any country.

The defence ministry said India and Vietnam continue to have the "most trustworthy relations in contemporary times with broader convergence of interests and common concerns."

Vietnam, an important country of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), has territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea region.

India has oil exploration projects in the Vietnamese waters in the South China Sea. India and Vietnam have been boosting their maritime security cooperation in the last few years to protect common interests.

Relations between the two countries were elevated to the level of 'strategic partnership' during the visit of Vietnam's then Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to India in July 2007.

In 2016, during Prime Minister Modi's visit to Vietnam, bilateral relations were further elevated to a 'comprehensive strategic partnership'.

Vietnam has become an important partner in India's Act East policy and the Indo-Pacific vision.

China moves closer to the border of peace and conflict

According to Mr. Hop's observation, both times the Chinese ships approached Russian and Vietnamese oil and gas blocks in Vietnam's exclusive economic zone, they had the same nature that "China used tactical actions in the area to avoid the loss of oil and gas. gray to different degrees to assert China's sovereignty along the nine-dash line in the South China Sea."

The difference is that this time, he said, the Chinese ships did not get too close to Zarubezhneft's mining sites.

This is also the first time China has used fishing boats - militia to escort, with a larger number of coast guard ships than before.

"China blatantly harasses the oil and gas exploitation activities of Vietnam, Russia and Japan, using gray zone tactics. The technical purpose of the research vessel may be to collect seismic data, measure radiation, hydrological survey ...," said Mr. Hop.

It makes me wonder if India and Vietnam should develop a new FAC in the 500 - 1500 ton class range based around brahmos (once Vietnam becomes comfortable with its reliability after current acquisition is completed).

Vietnamese navy has good experience (just like India) with Osa and Tarantul FAC missile boats.... so making a class of ship in similar range but instead of termit/styx, have brahmos instead (like say 4 or 8 per boat) and updated radar and firecontrol as needed etc.

It depends I guess on Vietnamese doctrine going forward.

India has adopted larger size of corvettes going forward (more in 2000+ ton range etc) so that they have air defence etc on board as well....i.e a 1:2 replacement kind of thing.

I wonder what Vietnam pick will be. If it goes for more 1:1, then a new brahmos FAC makes sense. Or would Vietnam also want more larger corvettes to replace smaller ones it has now in 1:2 way like India?

The Research Institute of Military Sciences and Technologies of the Vietnamese People's Army carried out work on the modernization of Soviet-made ZSU-23-4M Shilka self-propelled anti-aircraft guns. The ZSU-23-4M "Shilka" was equipped with a digital optical-electronic fire control system with an automated target tracking system in both day and night conditions and a laser range finder. The optical-electronic station was created by the Vietnamese company Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group. It was previously reported that the ZSU-23-4M "Shilka" was supposed to be equipped with double launchers for Russian-made "Igla" MANPADS, but so far the ZSU-23-4M is without them.

Sorry but what is the range of the guns, I tried looking it up, but it’s not mentioned on wiki.

It says 3,5 km for the polish upgraded one which is 500-1000m improved. Does that mean the one Vietnam has is effective within 2000-3000m range ?
