Chinese-Russian task force sails around Japan

By Mike Yeo
Oct 23, 12:11 AM

A joint Chinese-Russian naval armada has sailed around Japan following a joint exercise in the Sea of Japan, sailing through a narrow international waterway between two of Japan’s main islands.

The 10-ship naval task force, split evenly between Chinese and Russian vessels, sailed through the Tsugaru Strait, which runs between the Japanese islands of Hokkaido and Honshu, during their transit from the Sea of Japan into the western Pacific on Oct.18.

The Tsugaru Strait is an international waterway that is only 12 miles at its narrowest point. Japan has claimed territorial waters in the straits that extend to three nautical miles (5.6 km) from its coasts, significantly less than the maximum of 12 nautical miles (22.2 km) allowed under international law.

This meant the Chinese-Russian task force was sailing in international waters throughout its passage, which then saw the ships turn south along the Japanese coast before going west between Sumisu Island and Torishima in Japan’s Ogasawara islands in the early hours of Oct. 21.

The group of ships included the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy or PLAN Type 055 cruiser Nanchang (101), Type 052D destroyer Kunming (172) and Type 054A frigates Binzhou (515) and Liuzhou (573) accompanied by a Type 903A replenishment ship carrying the hull number 902.

The exact identity of this last ship is uncertain as the PLAN is in the process of re-numbering its replenishment and intelligence gathering fleet, but it is believed to be the Dongpinghu, which previously carried the hull number 960.

Meanwhile the Russian ships were the Udaloy-class destroyers Admiral Tributs (564) and Admiral Panteleyev (548), Steregushchiy-class corvettes Gromkiy (335) and Hero of the Russian Federation Aldar Tsydenzhapov (339) and the missile range instrumentation ship Marshal Krylov (331).

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, or JMSDF, kept a close watch on the task group as it sailed close to Japan’s waters, with the minesweepers Aoshima and Izushima in attendance as the Russian and Chinese ships transited the Tsugaru Strait. The Japanese also deployed a P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft from its Fleet Air Wing 2 at Hachinohe to monitor the task force.

As the task group made its way down Japan’s east coast, the JMSDF continued to monitor its progress, with the destroyers Yamagiri and Takanami taking turns to keep watch while overhead Japan Air Self Defense Force interceptors were scrambled in response to Kamov Ka-27 and Ka-28 helicopters flying off the Russian and Chinese ships.

The ships were some of those from both navies which took part in the Sea Interaction 2021 exercise that took place Oct. 14-17. A Russian defense ministry news release said a rescue ship and diesel-electric attack submarine from the PLAN was also involved, while the Russian contingent included the submarine Ust-Bolsheretsk, two minesweepers, a missile boat and a rescue tug.

Russian Sukhoi Su-30SM Flanker multirole fighters and unspecified anti-submarine aircraft were also involved in the exercise, which included naval gunfire live firing and anti-submarine warfare training. Russia also claimed to have chased an American destroyer out of exercise waters, although the U.S. Navy said the USS Chafee was in international waters before the area was closed for the exercise.

Where is the beloved ally, the US navy?
Russian strategic bombers circled around Japan, Russia and Chinese joint navy sail around the Japan. The so called ally US airforce and navy just runs away and hide.

I m asking why US didn't try to stop Chinese and Russian ships where they exercise is their own business. China and Russian ships are basically circling around the Japan.
It's in international waters not Japanese territorial waters.

Anyway the Chinese-Russian fleet are not even remotely close to the impressive firepower that the US had been showing off constantly since earlier this year.

But it's almost next to the coast...

US is just bluffing, they know they don't stand a chance fighting in the Taiwan strait.

On the other hand. Shanghai is vulnerable

LoL, China can also sail close to US coast, but dare US do anything beside sailing around? we dared them many times already. Last time we almost rammed into their ships.

The Pentagon has accused the Chinese ship of conducting an "unsafe and unprofessional manoeuvre" near USS Decatur as it sailed near Gaven Reefs, which are claimed by Beijing.

"A [People's Republic of China] Luyang destroyer approached USS Decatur in an unsafe and unprofessional manoeuvre in the vicinity of Gaven Reef in the South China Sea," said Captain Charles Brown, a spokesman for US Pacific Fleet, in a statement.

Captain Brown said the Chinese warship, "conducted a series of increasingly aggressive manoeuvres accompanied by warnings for the Decatur to depart the area".

"The PRC destroyer approached within 45 yards of DECATUR's bow, after which DECATUR maneuvered to prevent a collision," said Brown.

China learned by 7 decades that what US can do the best is bluffing, when there is really a conflict scenario, they just run away, in 1974 Paracel islands sea battle, US 7th fleet just ran away and left ally South Vietnamese navy high and dry, PLA actually barely had anything can be called a navy in 1974. It showed how much you can rely on this "ally".

The South Vietnamese fleet also received warnings that U.S. Navy radar had detected additional Chinese guided missile frigates and aircraft on their way from Hainan.
South Vietnam requested assistance from the U.S. Seventh Fleet, but the request was denied.

Whatever ships, they just ran away, they lack the courage of dying together that Chinese sailors showed.
they don't run away. read the link again .

A US Navy destroyer was spotted sailing through the Yellow Sea off the coast of Shanghai on Friday morning, in a move one observer described as the United States “playing with fire”.
The USS Rafael Peralta, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, was seen 116 nautical miles off China’s east coast at about 8am, according to a picture released by the South China Sea Strategic Situation Probing Initiative, a think tank based at Peking University, which cited the vessel’s AIS (automatic identification system) signal.
The ship, which is the second US destroyer to be seen in the Yellow Sea in less than a month, entered the waterway from the East China Sea and had been in waters close to China since May 3, the image showed.

China is never an agressive colonist like US, we never have their global domination ambition, we have money, but not to waste on the meaningless.
nahhh, you just realize that these PLAN show of force are nothing like what the US could brought to bear.

I said this is what US can do the best, bluffing. If they were scared of taking on China in 1974, what made you think they dare to do it now?
