Russia shares China’s, ASEAN’s concerns about AUKUS, foreign ministry says​

Russia shares the concerns expressed by China and the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) about the security pact between Australia, the UK and the US (AUKUS) viewed as a threat to regional security, Russian Representative in the UN General Assembly First Committee Andrey Belousov said.

“We share the concerns expressed by China at the First Committee. In addition, quite serious concerns were raised by ASEAN countries because they see in this trilateral technical partnership a threat to regional security,” Belousov said. “For example, Indonesia and Malaysia said the implementation of this initiative could lead to the arms race in the region.”

“Countries need more time and information about how the participants of this trilateral cooperation see the ways of its implementation. Only after receiving full information about it, we would be able to form any conclusions and questions regarding the impact of this initiative on security, nuclear non-proliferation regime and the commitments that the participants have under the frameworks of various international agreements,” he added.

On 15 September, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, together with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and US President Joe Biden, declared the formation of the new AUKUS defence and security partnership to protect the countries’ shared interests in the Indo-Pacific region.

The first initiative announced under the AUKUS defence pact was the creation of nuclear-powered submarine technology for the Royal Australian Navy, so the Australian government decided to abandon the $66 billion agreement with France's Naval Group company for the construction of diesel-electric submarines, prompting an angry reaction from France, with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian accusing Canberra of betraying the mutual trust between the countries.

No, VN don't have any problem with AUKUS. Only CN truly worry abt it bcs Aussie's nuke subs will block your expansion and create bigger trouble for CN in SCS (east VN sea ) and maybe Pacific ocean, too.

The loudest critic against AUKUS is Indonesia, understandable. Indonesia had been very wary of Australian military capabilities since they induct the F-111 Aardvark. The new nuclear submarine present a threat the same way the F-111 presented Indonesian leaders when it first inducted, namely the difficulties to detect and intercept such weapon.

But that doesn't mean that AUKUS will disrupt the long standing cooperation between the two country. Indonesian military cooperation with Australia is by far the second most extensive after maybe the US.

I think the main pursose of AUKUS is just for containing China who think she is strong enough to slap sanction on Aussie-UK now.

For ASEAN region, I don't see any reasons why UK and Aussie need to attack any ASEAN countries now. Even UK also didn't send troops to support US during VN war.

Interesting history here, our Army then was known anti-communist forces in Indonesia. During the Confrontation, Gen. Ahmad Yani was send a well known Kostrad intelligence officer, Ali Moertopo, to made a backdoor diplomacy with Malaysia and basically said the Army was not in favor of confrontation.

That's rich coming from the Russians - who are deeply involved in helping a non-NPT country like India in our nuclear submarine programs, and may have done the same for the Chinese in the past.

I understand that they're looking out for their own interests, but they really don't have any moral high-ground to caution against AUKUS here.

Note that developments like lease of Los Angeles-class SSN to RAN would have happened regardless due to the growing Chinese threat, however, the precedent for international collaboration on nuclear submarines was set by two previous notions:

1) the 1958 US-UK Mutual Defence Agreement aka the "Special Relationship" which included helping UK with both its SSN/SSBN design, naval PWR design, supply of WG-HEU & sale of Polaris missiles, and later on, supply of Trident-II ICBMs.

2) the 1987 lease agreement between USSR & India for a Pr. 670 (Charlie I-class) SSGN, the first such agreement after NPT was ratified

Ya, China-Russia relations now is nothing new (pre Sino-Soviet Split). But what is new is Russia's movement and political backing to China in this bad time. They kinda showing the world that they are in China side.

I don't know how ASEAN will see at Russia now, especially ASEAN countries that has problem with China about SCS. I think maybe their relations are still same, see from Vietnam that still heavily rely to Russia militarily. I will not gonna blame Vietnam if suddenly they doing a lot of cooperations with US in the future.

This one is not the only thing the AUKUS is about right? They also want to ramp up their joint efforts in cybersecurity and others.

If China also boost their relation with Russia, especially in cyber, I will expect they gonna be more effective in cyberspace, especially their cyber attacks and their art of influence operations.

Thinking about this really make me think of "wow, who expect this region could be a battlefield in the future", especially cyberwarfare.
