This is the part of your post that was difficult to handle. EVERYBODY with a passing interest in Kashmir knew about this incident. Perhaps your point is that this 'EVERYBODY' is not that large a number of people, and you might be right in thinking that - I don't know. It was far from unknown.

What builds resentment in the minds of a tiny fraction of the population is the blatant exploitation of this situation for direct political dividends. There is nothing covert about it.

I sincerely doubt it. The masses knew something was amiss and that Pandits were forced to leave the valley. That the Pandits were forced to carry "Kashmir banega Pakistan" signs and chant them, that muezzins blared from mosques asking them to leave or convert, that watches were set to Pakistan time etc. - I doubt many non Kashmiri Indians or those Indians without the details knew about all this.
