I think they withdrew to solidify their back line and to prepare for proper attack, after learning from their recent mistakes. Russian army certainly is incompetent, but not incompetent enough for them to not learnt from their recent mistakes.
They are indeed withdrawing in order to shorten frontage and the logistical and communications lines. That is very easy to predict as there is no other option really. What you're not talking in account is the fact that it gives Ukrainian army space and time too. So Ukrainian army with much superior training, tactics, weapons and infiltration skills can in reality besiege Russians or move reinforcements freely to counter Russian advances at the given points. As of Russians learning something and being adaptable well , if you see their wars and methodology it has almost never happened. I stated previously on the couple of occasions that theirs saviours have always been time, distance, endurance and in more then one occasion the lady luck. I forgot to add this gives for the first time the Ukrainian army a chance to regain tactical and strategic initiative to some extent combine that with their obvious adaptability and mobility and I think that Russians will experience as much problem as they have so far just a bit different nature. If Ukrainians have better airforce and air defence the game would be over in a few weeks

Don't give Russian
a 2nd chance
like when they went out from Chechnya
after 1st Chechnya war.

Probably they will come back
with more ruthless.
