The Nilgiri-class frigates, also classified as the Project-17 Alpha are a series of 7 guided-missile frigates having displacement 6,670 ton being built at an overall cost of Rs 45,000 crore. 4 out of 7 frigates is being constructed by MDL and other three by GRSE. 5 out of 7 frigates of this class has already been launched.
The 6th frigate is set to be launched on 17th August 2023 by GRSE. It’s going to be the 3rd and last Project-17A frigate under construction by GRSE. The delivery of 4 warships under construction by MDL will commence from FY 25 onwards at the rate of one frigate per year. The 3 warships which are under construction by GRSE are scheduled for delivery from mid of 2025 to mid of 2026.
The Project-17A frigates are “follow-on series” to the Shivalik-class frigates (Project 17) & are equipped with more sophisticated capabilities. Nilgiri-class frigates: Modular & Stealthy design The Project 17A are the most advance frigates build by Indian Navy and it’s because of its 2 main features. First one is its modular design and second is its stealth. The P-17A frigates are the first major warships to be built using the methodology of integrated modular construction – a manufacturing process in which multiple modules (or “blocks”) of a vessel’s hull are pre-assembled/pre-outfitted independently, before being aggregated for final assembly.
The frigate’s design incorporates a significant degree of stealth and low radar-observability – through the utility of composite materials, radar-absorbent coatings and low-observable/radar-transparent technologies. The frigate also maintains a low infrared and low acoustic signature.
The Project 17A uses a ‘flush deck’ layout in which the deck has a uniform, continuous layout from bow to stern, which reduces its radar cross-section, making it stealthier.

6 x older Talwar-class FFGs and 3 x Shivalik-class FFGs to get MFSTAR multifunction APAR and Barak-8 VLS. Massive upgrade in capabilities!
On the Shivalik the upgrade would be more straightforward as the CMS is our design and we hold the IPR to modify it as we want...but this upgrade also implies that we're going to be either totally replacing the Russian-origin CMS on the Talwars, OR we have convinced the Russians to part with all necessary source codes & information needed to carry out our own modifications.
