netanyahu thinks himself above the law and he is making a law change for this. This is exactly what dictatorship means, and fortunately Israelis are brave enough not to accept dictatorship. Just because he's president doesn't mean he can easily get over the fence. No one is above the law and democracy in Israel. There's no way to it.🇮🇱
shame they're not brave enough to end the decades-long military occupation of the Palestinians.

Just trying to calm his ego, Erdo was saying the same about his mall in gezi park remember? Well i still see no mall there a decade later.
But 10 years later you can see a mosque there. And that was one of the main reasons for the demonstration, not to have a mosque built.

Nah, pretty sure the reason for the treehuggers' original protest before whole country went up in arms was to stop the municipality from razing the Gezi Park to rebuild the Topçu Barracks. The actual Gezi protests came after zabıta and police tried to suffocate and kill those kids while sleeping in their tents.

And 10 years later you can still see the park there. Last I checked, still no barracks in taksim.

Wish we could uphold our democracy the same way back in the day. Power to the Israeli people.
Turkey was never a democracy in the first place, so there was nothing to uphold.
Our people are less educated.
Ordinary average Turks don't understand separation of powers, independence of the judiciary, rule of law..
Uneducated people love populist leaders like Netanyahu, Putin and Erdogan. I say this as a right wing patriot.
What are you talking about? none of that existed in the Turkish system in the first place.

Sorry, nonsense. Even with coups every decade, Turkey of old was miles more democratic than many others.

When Netanyahu said foreign powers are behind it.

I cracked up laughing so bad as Zionists, Jews and Israelis are nearly blamed for everything 🤣

Turkiye has always been a flawed democracy from the start.

Country has coups, authoratarianism and totaltarianism you had one party ruling for decades also had censorship numerous times. Not just Tayyip who engaged in censorship. While at the same time it has elections and a supreme court which is independant.

Adnan Menderes got hanged by the military. Eventhough his career was finished his execution basically turned him into a martyr.

Turkiye is just complex really.

Oh now going that path now? Nope it was not about the mosque, the mosque wasnt even in question back then, its construction started 4 years later.
The protests were about a shopping mall being built in a public park, on a completely different place, but i know you make it about religion to get brownie points from religious foreigners here who are ignorant about the issue, the Turks here know that you are not telling the truth.

Turkey's diplomacy resulted from political instability (the 80s small-scale civil war). Whenever a political party was able to stabilise the country, it would become authoritarian, and the only thing stopping the country from becoming a full-scale dictatorship was the Turkish military.

the problem is that the election system in turkey can not be called democratic as the system lets politicians be extremely corrupt. politicians never need to be accountable to the people since there is no way of voting a person out of office, this is because of the The D'Hondt method, a party-list proportional representation system. the D'Hondt method keeps garbage political parties in parliament while the closed party-list system protects corrupted and treasonous individuals from being voted out of office since all they need to do is be a crony to whoever is running the party.

the The D'Hondt method, a party-list proportional representation system, combines to give Turkey gets the worst parts of a democracy without any of it's strong points at this point Turkey would have been better off being an absolute monarchy.

ironically Erdoğan actually made Turkey somewhat more democratic by switching over to a presidential system. The presidential system gave Turks the ability to hold the government accountable as they can now vote out a politician from his office, not to mention politics now need to openly run for election instead of hiding behind their political party, which is run like a dictatorship from the inside.
I believe it is because of this fact that so many politician desire to return to the old parliamentary system of government instead of fine-tuning the presidential system so that it has checks and balances.
