Indonesian Air Force pilots test Rafale and A-330 MRTT aircraft

Indonesian Air Force fighter pilots test Rafale aircraft

Indonesian Air Force fighter pilot from Supadio Air Squadron 1, Major Pnb Dedi "Kingbee" Andres, had the opportunity to try flying in the back seat with a French Air Force pilot using a Rafale fighter. This opportunity is used by "Kingbee" to explore the capabilities and sophistication of the aircraft that we plan to buy.

During the three hour flight, Kingbee and the French Air Force pilot carried out the Air to Air Refueling (AAR) mission using the A-330 MRTT tanker. The AAR mission also involved three Indonesian Air Force F-16 fighter aircraft from the 3rd Air Squadron and the 14th Air Squadron at Iswahjudi Air Base in the south of the Iswahjudi Air Force training area, Madiun, East Java (25/7/2023).

During the three hours of flight, "Kingbee" saw and felt much of the sophistication of the Rafale, starting from the ideal aircraft cockpit design, powerful aircraft engines, and sophisticated aircraft avionics systems.

"Kingbee" recounted his experience, when Rafale was able to lock (lock) three F-16 aircraft from a distance of 80 NM (140 Km) which was taking off from Iswahjudi Air Force Base, Madiun. Within 40 NM (70 Km) the camera on the left nose of the aircraft can visually display the three locked aircraft on the screen display in the cockpit, this very impressive camera zoom ability to determine whether the target is friend or foe. (VID - Visual Identification)

Kingbee also acknowledged the capability of the Rafale aircraft's radar system which can track 40 targets and lock on to six targets simultaneously. Likewise with electronic warfare capabilities and very significant data links. Meanwhile, the Armament system made by Thales is very capable in carrying out Air Combat Maneuver, including for Beyond Visual Range, both Air to Air and Air to Ground.

FYI : The IRBIS-E radar on the Su-35 only manage lock at 100km against a single target.

No doubt, Rafale is some of the best in its class.
And I always thought it is the sexiest 4.5th gen fighter out there.
But I will stick with my Typhoon Trench 4 preference for BAF MRCA.
I just think it is better.

From Alman video, Rafale ToT are AESA Radar and data link. I hope it's true.
