The government, in the proposed budget for the 2024-25 financial year, has allocated Tk 42,014 crore for defence services while the amount was Tk 41,732 crore in the outgoing year.
However, the proposed operating and development budget for the defence is 5.3 per cent of the total budget of Tk 7.97 lakh crore placed in the parliament by finance minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali on Thursday.
The government in the annual budget for 2023-24 raised the allocation for defence services to Tk 41,732 crore from the actual allocation of Tk 31,624 in the 2022-23 financial year.
The revised allocation for defence, however, stood at Tk 37,802 crore in the outgoing fiscal year.
In the 2022-23 fiscal year, the proposed operating and development budget for defence was 5.9 per cent of the total outlay of Tk 6,78,064 crore.
In the revised budget for the 2022-23 financial year, the defence budget came down to Tk 36,650 crore from the original allocation.
Of the proposed allocation for the defence services in the new budget, Tk 38,798 crore has been allocated for meeting operating expenditure and Tk 1,284 crore for annual development expenditure.
Additionally, Tk 46 crore has been allotted for Armed Forces Division and Tk 1,886 crore for other services under the defence ministry for operating expenditure.
In the outgoing budget, Tk 38,284 crore was allocated for meeting operating expenditure and Tk 1,542 crore for annual development expenditure. Additionally, Tk 45 crore was allotted for Armed Forces Division and Tk 1,861 crore for other services under the defence ministry for operating expenditure.
