Explosion in Eritrea
An Ethiopian Airforce MIG 23 got shot down and the pilot taken as a captive.
Turkey on what side???It really doesnt seem this war will be resolved soon (despite what Ethiopian central govt says).
I wonder if Tigray long term becomes the next Eritrea.
We're not taking sides in this. We'll stay away and do our best for Somalia.Turkey on what side???

Shirvan once again explained it so well.

I didnt know much about Ethiopia at all until recently, i was shocked to hear that it has over 100 million inhabitants...Honestly I only knew Amharic w.r.t Ethiopia and that they have somalians too in east as main named groups....and I knew there was many other tribes etc....mostly because amharic is the national language/lingua franca for all the groups etc.
What I didn't know till recently (thanks to shirvan and also this dispute surfacing in general) is that its actually Oromo are the largest group population wise (much larger than amharic)...and Oromo have lot of tribes related to them closely too.
Shirvan excellent point I had not idea at all was the power tigray wielded in earlier govt compared to now that is a main point of conflict.

Africa in general has quite a large growth compared to rest of the world and considering how mismanaged most countries are its really worrysome, ironic when you think about it because the continent itself is so rich in ressources and could easily sustain the population. It is country that has fascinated me a long time, I just didn't delve into all the specific tribes that much etc.
Looking back, my interest was likely sparked by it being a unique hold out against colonization in Africa (as Sirvan references here) and I was really into rasta/reggae for a while too (thanks to Bob Marley)...these two matters are actually connected by way of rastafarian religion (Emperor Haile Selassie veneration largely based on his anti-colonial fight against Italy and other foreign powers etc).
Then there is other matters to get into like the birth of humankind itself...Ethiopia deep rift valleys could be candidate (along with rift valleys to south of it in East Africa) as the physical Garden of Eden so to speak (just millions of years ago for our hominid and also homo sapien ancestors). The third candidate I believe is much further south in south africa, but that is so far speculative.
You are correct its population is large, that is large result from its demographic stage 2 in 1990s etc after the derg regime ended and the massive famines etc ended overall.
During that period its population growth per year was kind of nuts, about 3.6% per year and more than 3% for quite some time.
Now it is thankfully starting to transition to phase 3 of demography (population growth rate around 2.5% per year)....so given that trend it likely gets to below 2% sometime this decade..or at least early the next one.
For comparison China entered <2% population growth rate around the mid 70s...Turkey and Indonesia around late 80s, India and Iran around early 90s, BD around 2000 and Pakistan right about now.
I would say Nigeria looks bit more worrisome demographically, they are around same population growth as Ethiopia (And also 2X the population) ...but their growth rate is not declining as fast as Ethiopia is (as somewhat leisurely drop Ethiopia's is to begin with).
Could the Militia from Tigray be attempting to escalate or drag Sudan into an open war with the central government ?Sudan says officers ambushed by Ethiopian 'forces and militias' during patrol
Sudan’s armed forces said on Wednesday that a number of its officers had been ambushed by “Ethiopian forces and militias” during a security patrol of the border region.
“During the return of our forces from combing the area around Jabal Abutiour inside our territory, they were ambushed by Ethiopian forces and militias inside Sudanese territory, as a result of which lives and equipment were lost,” the army said, adding the attack took place on Tuesday.
The Sudanese army did not specify how many officers were killed. Local residents said that reinforcements were being sent to the area, which is part of the Fashaqa locality where some Ethiopian refugees have been crossing into Sudan.
Fighting erupted on Nov. 4 between Ethiopia’s government and the then-governing party in Tigray, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). Thousands of people are believed to have been killed and more than 950,000 displaced, some 50,000 of them into Sudan, according to United Nations estimates.
Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok visited Ethiopia briefly on Sunday and relayed his concerns about threats to Sudan’s security along its border with Tigray.
