Remember back in August when China’s Deputy Head of Mission Wang Xining made that extraordinary speech at Canberra’s National Press Club outlining how Australia had wronged the Communist state?

It was a pointed attack at Australia over its decision to back an independent inquiry into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic – a decision the diplomat compared with the stabbing of Roman emperor Julius Caesar.

The rift over where coronavirus originated has dominated the relationship between the two previously strong allies. But it is far from the only reason China is “angry” at Australia.

A deliberately leaked document delivered by the Chinese embassy in Canberra to The Age newspaper reveals 14 disputes that are “poisoning bilateral relations”.
“China is angry,” an official said after the leak on Tuesday. “If you make China the enemy, China will be the enemy.”

I wonder what will the dudes in Jakarta think of having another US fleet in Darwin.

Singapore Changi always hosting a bunch of USN from time to time right now. I don't think its overall a huge change (in Jakarta thinking)

Besides it will push China to improve relations in genuine way with Indonesia and not harrass around natuna I feel....because there is literally going to be a number of USN ships permanently traversing SCS for them to deal/confront/track etc.

There are talks that TNI will participate in a joint amphib operations with Australia and the US in Darwin. After secretary Miller visited Jakarta yesterday.

Australia, EU, Japan, NZ all going through (or are likely soon going to go through) likely magnitsky act adoption (in addition to countries like US and Canada which already have this statute). They would all have to add specific CCP officials specifically to the existing sanctioned individuals though. We shall see.

Some CCP officials could very well be sanctioned by such for such things as genocide (in Xinjiang) and kleptocratic policies ( IP theft, trade violations etc).

I don't see the point for sanctioning some individual Chinese officials, do they care? it generates more heat than light. it's more of a symbolic gesture. No countries are able to sanction China, the west has to change their superior atitude when dealing with China.

China's defence budget only accounts for a very small percentage of her GDP, around 2%. China will never enter a arm race with anyone, we saw what happened to USSR, arm race only bankcorrupts countries, first USSR, now US.

China doesn't want to bully anyone, US is sanctioning China but this year China became the biggest trading partner of EU, US, ASEAN, India..., exports surge, surplus booming, foreign reserve hit a new high every month, Yuan hit new high every week, their bullying tactic ended up as the biggest joke in 2020.
