The morale boost evaporated once they lost more territory to Russia in the east.

Your second point doesn't make any sense. The U.S. hasn't given that permission yet, to use U.S. weapons inside Russia. It may happen in future, but as of now hasn't, thus the Kursk offensive didn't "achieve" that.

Ukraine deployed a *lot* of awesome troops and materiel to Kursk that could have been better spent elsewhere, in the hopes that the Russians would divert their troops from Eastern Ukraine to deal with the guys in Kursk. Putin didn't fall for it and didn't take the bait, therefore Kursk didn't achieve shit beyond a momentary "we're awesome!" feeling among Ukrainian troops, and the cost of it was Russia more-easily taking the territory in the east.

It's truly that simple. Zelensky made a gamble, one not all of his generals and intel people supported, and it didn't pay off.

Vladimir Putin is all too aware that economic pressure brought down the Soviet Union as he is forced to hike defence spending and slash social benefits to fund his war in Ukraine, according to Western officials.

The massive attack on Ukraine, which all expected to succeed in defeating the country in a few days or weeks, did not succeed. The prospects of a drawn out war succeeding were very poor once 'the West' decided to back the continuing existence of Ukraine as an independent state. At that point Russia should have started looking for ways to disentangle itself from a failed strategy. Putin chose not to do that.

The consequences of Putin choosing to continue with a strategy very unlikely to succeed were suffered by the world - disruption in trade, increased fuel prices, increased food prices etc. While the countries of the world have largely adapted to the new reality of a Russia cut off from its previous trading partners, Russia is now facing severe economic problems.

Inflation: near 10%
Central bank rate: 19%
Unemployment rate: lower than 2.5%

Russia has effectively run out of labour, resulting in a bidding war as the Russian army, defence producers and civil producers try to attract labour to their sector. Normally central banks raise interest rates to suppress inflation by reducing demand for goods and services. Demand for goods and services is not the problem here.

It does not help by further reducing one's labour stock by sending it to a place where it can be eliminated through death or incapacitation.

FT: Biden considers advancing Ukraine’s NATO membership before he leaves office

Ukraine, Nato membership and the West Germany model

Jeremy Shapiro of the European Council on Foreign Relations told the FT that the White House, which has so far been “sceptical” of Ukraine’s NATO accession, may consider the so-called “West German model” of NATO membership, according to which Bonn joined the alliance in 1955 to ensure its own security, despite its lack of territorial integrity due to the existence of East Germany. “The Russians would hate that, but at least it could be some opening gambit for a compromise,” Shapiro said

This is simply not correct. Even if we look at it from a territorial perspective only, the gamble paid off, as Ukraine took more square kilometers in Kursk than what it lost in the Donbas because of the weakend defenses.

If you add to that the morale boost, the fact that the war was brought home to Russia and that everyone knows now that Putin’s red lines are worth nothing, the Kursk offensive was a big success. I am sure Zelensky and Syrsky don’t regret doing the offensive.

Engineering units of the Russian army have begun to build fortifications in the forests and fields of the Kursk and Belgorod regions bordering Ukraine. Engineering units of the Sever group are engaged in the construction of fortifications; dugouts and caponiers are being created. As reported, military fortifications are not being created for defense, but for the development of an offensive by troops from them; they can also be used for temporary rest for servicemen.

Archival footage of a unique battle between two Russian BTR-82A 810 Brigade of the Russian Marine Corps, with nineteen armored vehicles, the 82nd separate airborne assault brigade of the Ukrainian army. The video was filmed in the Kursk region, the 82nd assault brigade on light armored vehicles, tried to enter the rear of the Russian army. Two BTR-82As worked from an ambush, fire was conducted from 30-mm automatic cannons 2A72, armor-piercing ammunition. The positions of the BTRs and the direction of fire are shown in the video, it is partially shortened, the damaged equipment is shown at the end of the video. The official report on the battle is as follows. The Ukrainian column was moving in a composition of nineteen armored vehicles, 12 armored vehicles were able to enter the area of the settlement. Eight armored vehicles were destroyed by crossfire, four armored vehicles were able to drive on, but were also destroyed by other units. Five armored vehicles, before reaching the main road, turned around on a dirt road and drove back. After the main battle, two armored vehicles tried to break through the ambush, shown at the end of the video, but were also destroyed.

The first footage has been published, although this has not been officially confirmed, of the downing of what is believed to be the new Russian S-70 Okhotnik attack UAV. The S-70 Okhotnik drone was shot down, presumably, by a Russian Su-57 aircraft at close range in the skies over Gorlovka. After that, the aircraft turned around to avoid the Ukrainian air defense zone. Usually, the S-70 drone flies in tandem with the Su-57, but we also showed a flight in tandem with the Su-30. The drone fell in the Donetsk region near Konstantinovka. Unofficially, it was reported that a technical failure occurred and the S-70 Okhotnik drone lost control, after which it was decided to destroy it. The drone was a prototype.

Apparently it was hacked and redirected towards Ukraine (like Iran did with the US drone). The russians quickly shot it down. Doesn't look good at all for Russia.

Unless Ukraine

(a) has weapons capable of shooting down the aircraft launching glide bombs
(b) attacks those aircraft in Russian air space before they launch the glide bombs

the glide bomb attacks can continue uninterrupted. If the US is preventing Ukraine using weapons to defend itself from these attacks, it is responsible in part for the deaths and destruction being suffered by Ukraine.

The US is supposed to be helping Ukraine protect itself from Russian attack, not preventing Ukraine protect itself from Russian attack. If that is what the US is doing, it is not clear to me which side the US supports in this war. I have not before come across a war in which one ally (US) makes it easier for the enemy to attack another ally (Ukraine)!
Do you see now that there is no winning for ukraine with the weapons it has from the ''West''?
if the US wanted Ukraine to win,it would have giving weapons making it able to win it.
The US is just making sure Ukraine doesnt get overrun by Russia.

Russia has every right to defend herself. I hope they will defeat the Ukrainian terrorists. Russian people lived in Ukraine for centuries so that land can never be Ukrainian.
Turkic people lived in the territory of modern-day Ukraine for years before the state known as Russia came into existence. They were then kicked out of their homes there or forced into a subservient role by said Russians. I'm curious how you, as apparently born of a Turkic country, feel about this.

Russia is fighting for her existence, it is the only Russian state in the world and the only democracy in Asia, surrounded by Western enemies.

Ukrainians are just desert-Polaks and should go live in Poland. The Russians lived in Ukraine and Crimea for thousand years and Kiev is the eternal Russian capital and cant be shared.

I'm not convinced that Russia is fighting in Ukraine for its existence. Ukraine has never had any designs on invading and conquering Russia. I think that the biggest threat to Russia's existence as a viable state is continuing to fight in Ukraine.

Kiev the capital of Russia? Are there any maps published in Russia that don't show Moscow as the capital?

More info on the Russian economy:

Since Russia launched what the Kremlin is still calling its “special military operation” in Ukraine, armaments factories have been working round the clock and more and more Russians have been employed in the defence sector.

That’s driven up wages in the military-industrial complex.

But spend big on the military and there’s less to spend on everything else.

“Longer term, you are destroying the economy,” believes Chris Weafer, founding partner of Eurasian consultancy firm Macro-Advisory. “There is no money going into future development.”

He says back in 2020 there was much discussion about the National Project programme, under which $400bn was to be spent on improving Russia’s infrastructure, transportation and communications. Instead, “almost all that money has been side-tracked to fund the military industrial-complex and support stability in the economy”.

Kiev was the capital of Kiev Rus, the first Slavic state in Eastern Europe, established by Prince Rurik in the 9th century.

It was always the land of the Russians and their ancestors. There is not such thing as the Ukrainian people, they are desert-Polaks from the Polish-Luthuanian Commonwealth.

Kiev was the capital of Kiev Rus, the first Slavic state in Eastern Europe, established by Prince Rurik in the 9th century.

And that first Slavic state you mention is the predecessor of today’s Ukraine. You are being misled by the word “Rus”, assuming that they were the modern Russians, which is false. The Moscovites (the predecessors of today’s Riussians) named themselves “Russian”, in order to associate themselves with the Kyivan Rus and have claims as far as Ukraine, but they are not the same people.

Just like Slavs living in today’s Northern Macedonia are calling themselves “Macedonians” in order to claim descent from Alexander the Great‘s ancient Macedonia (who was Greek), the Russians called themselves like that in order to claim descent from the Kyivan Rus. It’s all about making false claims on someone else’s historical territory.

It was always the land of the Russians and their ancestors. There is not such thing as the Ukrainian people, they are desert-Polaks from the Polish-Luthuanian Commonwealth.

You are so wrong, it is embarrassing. Kyiv was always the land of its inhabitants, which are called Ukrainians now. The territory of Ukraine was inhabited by several people in the past, including Cossacks, Tatars, Ukrainians and Russians, with the Russians being the ones who oppressed the others during the Soviet Union.

The Russians are hated by the people who currently inhabit Ukraine, because they have abused and oppressed them throughout history in order to displace them, erase them and steal their land. This is what Russians do.

But I guess you have no problem with displacing people and stealing someone else’s land, as long as it doesn’t happen in Palestine.

You mean like todays Israeli's? Claiming that Palestine belongs to them, making false claims, calling theirselves the Chosen People, while 90% of them are coming from Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Russia and have no historical connection with the MENA-region.

You mean like Palestine always belongs to the Palestinians?

Descendants of the ancient Philistines from the land of Canaan, they always lived and belonged there and they have the blood of the original inhabitants in their vains (according to DNA researches), but despite this they were forced to leave their lands and villages by European settlers who claimed they were the 'original habitants'.

This is called: Western hypocrisy.

Israel/Palestine doesnt get the same treatment as Russia/Ukraine.

Alexandar the Great wasnt Greek

He was from the ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedonia. Ancient Macedonians were just as Greek as ancient Athenians, Spartans, Corinthians, etc. They spoke the ancient Greek language, wrote with Greek alphabet and were part of the Hellenistic culture. His teacher was Aristotle and his mother was named Olympias. You can’t get any more Greek than that. Are you going to claim now that Aristotle was not Greek as well? How far can delusion go?
