Hanwha Aerospace announced on July. 10. that it has secured a supply contract with the Romanian Ministry of National Defence for K9 self-propelled howitzers, support equipment, ammunition, and more. The contract, worth 1.3828 trillion won (approximately $998.41 million), extends until July 2029. In partnership with local companies, Hanwha Aerospace plans to begin delivering 54 K9 self-propelled howitzers and 36 K10 armored ammunition resupply vehicles starting in 2027.

First AS9 and AS10 Huntsman vehicles arrival ceremony​

Hanwha Defence Australia welcomed the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Defence and federal government member for Corio The Hon. Richard Marles MP to the Hanwha Armoured Vehicle Centre of Excellence (H-ACE) to acknowledge the first LAND 8116 vehicles in Auscam markings.

Batch 1 of the program vehicles (2 AS9s and 1 AS10) arrived in Australia in December 2024 from the Republic of Korea. The remainder of the vehicles are being produced at the H-ACE, at the Avalon Airport Precinct.

“We are excited to have the first vehicles here in Australia as we prepare to deliver this capability to the Australian Army,” Acting HDA Managing Director Mr Dean Michie said. “Production of the hulls and turrets is already taking place at Elphinstone in northern Tasmania, and our production line here at the H-ACE has also begun work.”

The AS9 Huntsman has been developed to incorporate learnings and experience from the global fleet of over 2,400 K9s and K10s, the most popular self-propelled howitzer globally.

With the AS9 Huntsman, Hanwha has a proven 52-caliber 155mm gun system that is in-service with multiple nations around the world, including the NATO alliance.

The AS10 is a highly protected and maneuverable Armoured Ammunition Resupply Vehicle (AARV) with a unique loading system that reduces risk to soldiers from enemy fire.

Manufactured with Australian supply chain partners like Elphinstone, Kongsberg Defence Australia, CBG Systems, Penguin Composites, HIFraser, MMCLD, Bisalloy Steel, AME, Safran Electronics and Defence Australasia, Sigma Bravo, Thales Australia, Axalta and TEi working alongside the international supply chain base, Hanwha has made a significant ongoing investment in the Australian market.

“The technology transfer on the program between South Korea and Australia is an important part of this program, demonstrating the close ties between the two nations,” Mr Michie explained. “Celebrating this milestone with our government, Defence and supply chain partners in our new facility is an honour.”

Hanwha Aerospace signs 371.4 billion won contract to export K9 howitzers to India​

Hanwha Aerospace announced on the 3rd that it has signed an additional export contract for K9 self-propelled howitzers to India.

The contract is worth 371.4 billion won, accounting for 3.3% of Hanwha Aerospace's sales for 2024. Hanwha Aerospace plans to supply self-propelled howitzers to the Indian Army in collaboration with L&T (Larsen & Toubro) by September 2030. A Hanwha Aerospace official explained, "The K9 self-propelled howitzer has met the operational requirements of the Indian military and proven its reliability."

Previously, Hanwha Aerospace signed a supply contract for K9 self-propelled howitzers with India in 2017 and completed deliveries in 2020. Since the first contract period was carried out smoothly, it has become a reliable partner in the Indian defense industry market.

Hanwha Aerospace stated that this export has expanded its market beyond Europe to Asia. In particular, it noted that the possibility of exporting air defense systems currently under negotiation with India has increased significantly. India is currently pursuing military reform policies, including enhancing integrated operational capabilities and modernizing infrastructure.

Lee Seong-ho, the South Korean ambassador to India, said, "This additional contract symbolizes a milestone in expanding defense cooperation based on mutual trust between the two countries, marking the 10th anniversary of the South Korea-India special strategic partnership." Son Jae-il, CEO of Hanwha Aerospace, stated, "With the excellent performance of the K9 self-propelled howitzer and stable delivery record, we will further strengthen cooperation with various countries in the Asian defense market, including India."
