The Indian and Thai navies on June 9 kicked off a three-day coordinated patrol in the Andaman Sea in the backdrop of growing concern over China’s increasing maritime presence in the Indian Ocean region.

The Indian Navy’s offshore patrol vessel INS Saryu and Thai ship Krabi along with Dornier maritime patrol aircraft from both navies are participating in the 31st edition of the India-Thailand coordinated patrol (CORPAT), officials said.

The two navies have been bi-annually undertaking CORPAT along their international maritime boundary line (IMBL) since 2005 with an aim to keep the vital part of the Indian Ocean safe and secure for global trade, Indian Navy Spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said.

“The CORPAT builds up understanding and interoperability between navies and facilitates institution of measures to prevent and suppress unlawful activities like illegal unreported unregulated [IUU] fishing, drug trafficking, maritime terrorism, armed robbery and piracy,” he said.

“It further helps enhance the operational synergy by exchange of information for prevention of smuggling, illegal immigration and for conduct of search and rescue operations at sea,” he added.

In sync with the government’s vision of SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region), the Indian Navy has been proactively engaging with the countries in the Indian Ocean Region towards enhancing regional maritime security.

“The 31st Indo-Thai CORPAT will contribute towards Indian Navy’s efforts to consolidate interoperability and forge strong bonds of friendship with Royal Thai Navy,” Mr. Madhwal said.

The Indian Navy has been gradually expanding its presence in the Indian Ocean region in the last few years.

Notwithstanding the coronavirus pandemic, the Indian Navy participated in maritime exercises in the last few months with a number of countries.

In November last, India held the Malabar exercise. India invited Australia for the exercise effectively making it a drill by all the Quad member nations.

The Quad, comprising India, the U.S., Australia and Japan, is aimed at ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific, a region that witnessed increasing Chinese military assertiveness in recent years.

China has been suspicious about the purpose of the Malabar exercise as it feels that the annual war game is an effort to contain its influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Till we have specifics (if they are ever released), I would assume some collab between big 3 (CBI, NIA and RAW) since there are both foreign and local intersections here.

‘And he flew away’: Bollywood mourns death of legendary sprinter Milkha Singh

In 2013, a film was made on the life of Milkha Singh called ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, which was directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and starred Farhan Akhtar as Singh along with Sonam Kapoor, Divya Dutta, Yograj Singh and Prakash Raj in supporting roles.

Legendary sprinter Milkha Singh, also known as the ‘Flying Singh’, lost a month-long battle to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) on Friday. He was 91 years old and was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the PGIMER hospital in Chandigarh.


Soon after the news of Milkha Singh’s demise was announced by his family, tributes started pouring in for the sprinter. Several Bollywood celebrities took to their social media handles to express their grief.

I guess that's how may foreigners like me got to know about Milkha Singh The atrocities, horror and trauma he faced specially when he went back to his old home in Pakistan and started to cry, that scene was really heart wrenching. Another scene about rejecting the Indian athlete for his career was cool. I hope he met Biro after her marriage.

This guy was quite a legendary athlete - during the race in Olympics where he finished 4th, all 4 top guys broke the world record in the same race. Of course, Anand is also a national treasure in his own right. But this guy was 91.

Nope, he had recovered from Covid. Developed pneumonia after Covid and that did him in. His son is quite an accomplished golfer in his own right - first Indian to the crack the Top 100 in golf.

Oxygen crisis ended a long time back in India, almost a month ago as cases reduced and oxygen production increased.

New Delhi: It’s been a year since India shut down two of its four consulates in Afghanistan — at Jalalabad and Herat — and the Narendra Modi government has no plans to reopen them anytime soon, ThePrint has learnt.
India had temporarily shut down both the consulates in April last year, ostensibly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A review of the situation is still pending, highly-placed sources in India’s strategic and security community said.


The review of the security situation and the decision to reopen the two consulates in Afghanistan is also expected to be delayed further as the present US administration under President Joe Biden is working out its Afghanistan strategy.

‘Volatile situation’​

According to one source, who refused to be identified, while Covid was one of the main reasons behind the decision to close down the consulate in Herat, a deteriorating security situation and a significant increase in violence in the past year were also key reasons why the Jalalabad consulate was closed, and the plans to reopen it have been left pending.
“The Jalalabad consulate was like four men being surrounded by 40 adversaries. So, why to take a chance when the situation is so volatile there right now?” the source said.



In 2013, a suicide attack was carried out at the Jalalabad consulate, which killed Afghan police personnel, civilians, including children.
The consulate was attacked many times before, and sources said India believed it was a better option to keep it closed until the peace talks with the Taliban came to a conclusion and violence levels came down.
The consulate was believed to be the target of a terrorist attack again in 2016, when the Indian embassy in Mazar-e-Sharif was also attacked, leading to an intense gun-battle.

According to sources, New Delhi was under “considerable pressure” to close the consulates, especially the one in Jalalabad. Pakistan had been pushing for this through the previous US administration led by Donald Trump, which had signed a ‘peace deal’ with the Taliban in February 2020. The sources said Pakistan was “discontent” and “often complained” about India having a consulate in Jalalabad, opened in 2002, as it carries out its own proxy operations there.

It also states that Pakistan was asking US to shut down Indian consulates. I guess with the Taliban back in power any work India did to build infrastructure like schools and roads to benefit the common Afghan will take a backseat. We can only hope the Taliban don't go around breaking and destroying heritage icons like the Bamiyan Buddhas or prevent girls from going to school.
