In a major boost to the Indian Armed Forces, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has inked contracts worth Rs 2,500 crore for the procurement of the Nag Missile System (NAMIS) Tracked version, an advanced anti-tank weapon platform, and approximately 5,000 Light Vehicles. The agreements, signed under the ‘Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured)’ category, signify a strong push towards self-reliance in indigenous defence manufacturing.

The contracts were finalized in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi. Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited (AVNL) will manufacture the NAMIS (Tr) system, while Force Motors Ltd and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd will supply the light vehicles.

Advanced NAMIS (Tr) Weapon System to Strengthen Anti-Tank Capabilities

The NAMIS (Tr) weapon system, developed by the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), costs Rs 1,801.34 crore. It marks a significant milestone in modernising the Indian Army’s mechanized infantry, enhancing its anti-tank capabilities across diverse operational scenarios.

NAMIS (Tr) is designed to deliver superior firepower and lethality against enemy armour. It is equipped with a fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile and an advanced sighting system. The system is expected to redefine mechanised warfare and provide the Indian Army with a crucial operational edge.

Posted On: 02 APR 2025 3:36PM by PIB Delhi

Project Sanction Order under Make-I category for the Design and Development of 6MW Medium Speed Marine Diesel Engine has been inked between Indian Navy and Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited. The prototype diesel engine with indigenous content of over 50% will be developed at a cost of Rs 270 crore with 70% funding from the Government of India. The order also includes development of detailed design for 3-10MW diesel engine. The developed engines will be used for Main Propulsion and Power Generation on ships of the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard.

Most of the diesel engines of higher capacity were being imported from foreign Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) till date. This project will start the process in achieving self-reliance in marine engine development in the country.

It is a significant step in the ongoing efforts of the Government, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, to indigenise critical technologies and achieve Aatmanirbharta in defence. It will further strengthen indigenous capabilities, save foreign exchange and reduce dependency on foreign OEMs. It will act as a catalyst for the development of defence industrial ecosystem in the country.

The AAP-Wheeled indeed seems to be Kestrel 2.0 - the next generation of the platform that builds on all the knowledge gained & testing done so far (we have Army's IPMV order, BSF/CRPF orders & Moroccan order to thank for that).

AAP-Tracked seems to be intended for the FICV requirement (BMP-2 replacement).

I guess we're clubbing them together so as to use as many common components as possible. Whats more, I'm willing to bet they'll both have a high degree of commonality in components & tech with the Zorawar light tank.

The EME or Electronics and Mechanical Engineers directorate of the Indian Army is a vital technical backbone of the land forces providing technical and maintenance support to all branches of the Indian Army.

It is responsible for testingting, trials, repairs and upgrades of almost all equipment in the inventories of different units. Through a chain of what are called Base Workshops and Field Workshops, EME officers and personnel help maintain valuable and lethal equipment and platforms in top shape. From small arms to tanks and from radars to artillery guns, EME personnel inspect, repair, inspect and overhaul various kinds of equipment.

One of its recent success stories is the complete overhaul and refurbishment of Soviet-origin T-90 tanks at its workshop in Delhi (see the episode on the Base workshop ➡️ • Rejuvenating The Beasts Of War || Ins... ).

Speaking to Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale, the current DG EME, Lt Gen JS Sidana elaborates on the EME's evolving role and why keeping up with modern technology is an essential part of its philosophy. Tune in to watch more.
