Attack on Pearl Harbor

Article Talk

"December 7, 1941" redirects here. For the date, see December 1941 § December 7, 1941 (Sunday).
The attack on Pearl Harbor[nb 3] was a surprise military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service upon the United States against the U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, just before 8:00 a.m. (local time) on Sunday, December 7, 1941. The United States was a neutral country at the time; the attack led the U.S. to formally enter World War II on the side of the Allies the following day. The Japanese military leadership referred to the attack as the Hawaii Operation and Operation AI,[nb 4] and as Operation Z during its planning.[12][13][14]

After the attack was over, Admiral Yamamoto declared that "we have woken up a sleeping giant ". How true was that indeed.

Its somewhat anecdotal quote (he expressed his concern differently in reality).

BTW, have you watched the movie "Tora Tora Tora"? This was movie I watched a lot growing up as it was one of my dad's favourite movies of all time.

Yes good movie

I have a friend who's dad served in the RCN. When I stayed with them a while during a visit, meeting his dad for first time and having lot of conversations in general.....he became very solemn one time when topic of pearl harbour came up (he had also visited the memorial)...still hurts to this day in naval community this side of the pond.

You might find this analysis a good one to watch:

The rest of his (montemayor) channel is top notch stuff (his pacific theatre analysis etc), we have discussed it at times in the combat, war, geopolitics thread which if of course much more broad one but one you can also peruse later to your interests:

BTW this is great review of the movie (a great channel in general too):
