Azerbaijan has modernized the T72 Aslan tanks. The Russian publication Topwar writes about this.
“Azerbaijan has developed its own version of modernizing the Soviet T-72 tanks, which are in service with the army of the republic; the improved tank was shown during the ADEX 2024 international defense exhibition taking place in Baku.
...In this configuration, the T-72 received Israeli-made electronics. The tank also has modern fire control and aiming systems, possibly also Israeli.
On the outside, the modernized tank was reinforced with dynamic protection, lattice screens, and a so-called “brazier” was installed to protect the upper sphere of the tower from drones. The improvements are clearly made taking into account the experience of the Russian self-defense forces in Ukraine.
... Let us recall that after the collapse of the USSR, the Azerbaijani army had a little more than 400 T-72A/AV/B tanks in service; how many of them were modernized is not reported...
“Unfortunately, no information about the internal modernization of the tank was provided,” the publication sadly writes.
