I didn't want to use the clickbait title but it's a decent overview of the current state of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS)

It's a complicated subject unrelated to Russian air Force. So I will cut it short. Self sufficiency is indeed a laudible goal and I agree that it's very important but:

We have to keep a very close eye on our relationships with the outside world. Turkish defence industry could never get to where it is now without foreign suppliers, tech transfer from various countries, etc. Even after we develop these systems we have to have good relationships with the outside world to be able to export them and turn a revenue.

This is a big problem of Russia too. They are incredibly advanced in weapons technology, clearly far ahead of us but they lack foregin partners to export their systems. Which is partially the reason why the Russian economy is so weak compared to even Germany.

Honestly people can hate the West all they want but there is one thing they are ahead that is Science and Technology.

Western Technology is way ahead of Russia and China. I know South Korea and Japan are powerhouses but people forget how their tech comes from the West not to mention how they import and cooperate with them.

There is a reason why so many nations are doing their best to get their hands on Western technology even sending students abroad to study.

I agree the Turkish defence industry has come a long way I agree they need to cooperate with a lot of countries especially the West. We can all be critical of NATO but it helped a lot in Turkey getting the tech along with the know-hows.

I just hope Turkey and the West put aside their dickwaving and cooperate more. We do benefit a lot from their tech. No disrespect to any Turkish scientist, inventor and engineer who work their asses off 24/7 I never doubt their capabilities and ingenuity.

The Checkmate light stealth fighter was officially presented today at MAKS 2021. Here are some interesting things we have noticed in the presentation.​

The much awaited official unveiling of the Sukhoi “Checkmate“, Russia’s new 5th generation fighter aircraft was held on Jul. 20, 2021 at MAKS 2021 airshow in Zhukovsky, near Moscow. The event was streamed online on Youtube by Rostec, Russia’s state aerospace and defence conglomerate, and, despite the quality of the feed and the fact that all the commentary was in Russian, this gave us an opportunity to virtually attend the presentation.


While the general shape of the new single seater stealthy aircraft had already been revealed by photos taken as the aircraft (actually, a mock up of it) was being moved to be prepared for the presentation last week, today’s official unveiling, preceded by a visit by President Putin, provided an opportunity for a closer look at the Checkmate and gather some additional details.



First of all, the presentation highlighted the advanced technology the aircraft is going to embed: the fifth-generation lightweight single-engine fighter is said to “combine innovative solutions and technologies, including artificial intelligence support for the pilot’s work, as well as proven solutions that have already proven themselves in practice. The fighter has low visibility and high flight performance. Supercomputer technologies are widely used in the work on the LTS Checkmate project.” The presentation also mentioned voice command capability and showed a glass cockpit with a wide angle HUD (Head Up Display).

An AESA radar housed in the new aircraft’s nose section was shown, along with missiles in the side weapons bay.



Interestingly, a wide array of weapons was listed among those that could be carried by the multirole aircraft (believed to be developed with an eye on the export market based on the brief promotional video featuring pilots from UAE, India, Vietnam and Argentina, released in the last few days): RVV-MD and -SD air-to-air missiles, KH-38MLE air-to-surface missile, Kh-58UShKE anti-radiation missile, GROM E-1 and E-2 air-to-surface munitions, the KAB-250LG-E LGB (Laser Guided Bomb), the K08BE (500 kg) and K029BE (1500 kg) satellite-guided bombs and the S-8, S-13 rockets.

We have certainly missed some additional interesting things (we can’t understand Russian…), but you can watch the whole presentation again below:



Needless to say, the aircraft is still a mock up based on a concept and a lot of work will have to be done to translate all the nice capabilities mentioned in the promotional videos and presentation into a real, flying thing.

I think some people forget the fact that Russia is a European power too. Yeah there are some major differences compared to western Europe including religion, the alphabet, the period of communism etc. But it's still a European nation. So this east-west dicothomy is not very helpful in understanding them.

Yeah indeed a lot of people forget that Russians are Europeans.

What is interesting is the scale of Turkic and Mongolic ancestry among modern day Russia.

Russian history is interesting itself because Russia itself comes from the Vikings aka the Rus who settled in what is now Russia while locally marrying Slavic women. Russia also had lots of Turkic states and Turkic peoples living from Kazan all the way to Siberia.

Volga Bulgaria a Turkic state is one of the earliest of the Turkic peoples to accept Islam not to mention even gave Genghis Khan his earliest defeats.

When it comes to Turkic peoples accepting Islam we always tend to focus on the Oghuz Turks.

You are partially correct but whereas F35 was meant to replace many older planes in US forces. There's a heavy emphasis on export when it comes to Checkmate.

I struggle to remember when was the last time Russia made a single engine jet. Was it Mig 15? Even their "budget" Mig 29 was twin-engined.

I think F35 failed in becoming a cheaper alternative to the point that It could have been cheaper to modernize the F-22 and just producing three thousand modernized F-22s rather than developing the F35. As a result US air force is still buying F-15s.

I think Checkmate will end up being much cheaper than Su-57 and replace many older planes in Russian inventory.

No canards, no thrust vectoring, no leading edge control surfaces. None of that fancy stuff we're used to seeing from Russian planes. It will be cheaper, simpler and it will rely on stealth.

F35 has become a Ferrari. Sometimes you got to have a Ferrari in the garage.

If the Turkish airforce and the turkish navy ever think about getting a plane I hope they get the F35.

I have a love and hate relationship with it. Australia has F35s they are expensive as shit not to mention its maintence but they are just so cool to have same with Turkey so many critical arguments against the F35 while at the same its a capable machine that can kick ass but its expensive but at the same time you are like Turkey needs an elite fighter that can set a balance in the region. Turkish air force is one of the big guns in the region so it suits to have an elite fighter.

As usual even if we dont get the F35 i dont see in losing a lot of sleep in it as warfare changes there is no such thing as a God weapon as anything can be countered.

SU57 is just way of showing the world that us Russians have elite jet that can take on the elite F22.

Russia's way of saying we have planes to take on both the F22 and the F35 when the F22 and F35 became operational many asked questions where is Russia 5th gen jets especially since China's J20 became operational.

Russia does not want to lose its edge. Jet fighters will stay as the bread and butter of modern warfare in the future even when unmanned becomes even more common.

A prototype of the newest Russian IL-112V military light transport aircraft crashed during a flight in Kubinka outside Moscow.

The incident occurred during a training flight at the Kubinka air base. The cause of the crash is unknown.

Eyewitnesses report that the plane caught fire shortly before the crash.

All three crew members on board were killed when the Il-112V went down on Aug. 17.

The Il-112V is the first military transport plane developed in Russia from scratch in the post-Soviet period. The work on the plane’s development has been going on at the Ilyushin Aircraft Company since 2014. The Il-112V is designated to transport personnel, military hardware and armaments.

Russia is developing the Il-112V to replace An-26 and An-24 turbo-prop planes. The Il-112 performed its debut flight on March 30, 2019, and took to the skies for the second time two years later.

MOSCOW, February 17. /TASS/. Two Tu-22M3 strategic bombers of Russia’s Aerospace Force conducted an air patrol over Belarus as part of the Union Resolve 2022 joint Russia-Belarus drills, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported on Thursday.


"During the Union Resolve 2022 joint exercise, two Tu-22M3 long-range bombers of Russia’s Aerospace Force carried out a new air patrol in the airspace of the Republic of Belarus," the ministry said in a statement.


At some sections of the route, the long-range bombers were escorted by Su-35 fighters of Russia’s Aerospace Force, the ministry specified.


The Russian bombers’ flight lasted about three hours, the ministry said.




"By now, all the aircraft have returned to their home airfield," the statement says.

The Union Resolve 2022 joint drills are running on Belarusian territory on February 10-20. The participating troops are practicing fighting and repelling external aggression, countering terrorism and protecting the interests of the Union State. The troops are practicing their joint operations at the Domanovsky, Gozhsky, Obuz-Lesnovsky, Brestsky and Osipovichsky training grounds in Belarus. The Baranovichi, Luninets, Lida and Machulishchi airfields are also involved in the drills.
