The Russian Air Force’s latest strategic bomber, the deeply modernized Tu-95MSM ‘strategic missile carrier, made its first flight on August 23. The flight lasted 2 hours and 33 minutes and reached an altitude of 9,000 meters, and the aircraft performed nominally.

Yuri Slyusar, General Director of PJSC UAC, Vice President of SoyuzMash of Russia LLC, emphasized: “This is an aircraft with a new armament system, a new on-board electronic equipment complex, with newly modified engines and new propellers. The combat capabilities of the vehicle have doubled after this upgrade. After departure, tests will continue. Modernization of the fleet of strategic missile carriers will continue along this path."

The modernization will significantly increase the navigation accuracy and reliability indicators, extend the service life of the aircraft system, and improve its takeoff and landing characteristics.

As part of the deep modernization, new systems were installed on the Tu-95MSM: weapons control, aircraft control, flight and navigation equipment, an onboard communications system, a radar station, and targeting control equipment. The result of the work carried out will be a significant increase in the efficiency indicators of the aircraft system when used for its intended role.

Tu-95MSM is the first strategic missile carrier, a new modification of the world's fastest turboprop aircraft-missile carrier Tu-95MS. It is designed to carry out combat missions while protecting the country's distant borders.

New Tanks After Armata's Retirement




Russia unveiled the "future tank" project, which will replace Armata tanks after 2040, at the 2020 International Military and Technical Forum. In the future, the long-term tank project, which will be shaped according to the needs of the security forces, was shared as two modules.

The first module is planned to be developed in capsules equipped with highly sheltered armour, with three crew members on duty. Among the shared information that the tank will be equipped with an electro-thermochemical cannon.

The tank will also carry out the mine search mission while reconnaissance with the second module. In addition, the drones to be integrated into the tank are intended to perform missions together with the platform.

The two modules will be connected.

The Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Factory (part of the Sukhoi Aircraft Company within the United Aircraft Corporation) is modernizing its production capacities to launch the continuous assembly line for the latest Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets, the Corporation announced on Wednesday.

"In Komsomolsk-on-Amur, the production capacities have been upgraded and retooled, which allows us to fulfill the defense procurement plan successfully and on schedule. <…> Under the defense procurement plan, we are planning to deliver 76 Su-57 aircraft platforms to the Defense Ministry by 2028," Sukhoi CEO Ilya Tarasenko reported to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu during his visit to the enterprise.

The Sukhoi chief executive showed the defense minister the final assembly workshop where preparations are underway for launching the continuous assembly line for the Su-57 fifth-generation multi-purpose fighters.

Defense Minister Shoigu said during a working meeting with defense industry officials earlier on Wednesday that the ministry would sign an additional contract for the delivery of Su-35S multirole fighters to the troops.


The United Aircraft Corporation said that the implementation of the two programs would allow the enterprise in the Russian Far East to utilize its production capacities and keep jobs for over 10,000 workforce.

Russia’s Aerospace Force to get Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets by year-end
Russia’s Aerospace Force will get the latest Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets and Il-76MD-90A military transport planes by the end of the year, Aerospace Force Deputy Commander-in-Chief Lieutenant-General Sergei Dronov said on Wednesday.

"Defense enterprises are delivering new aircraft to the Aerospace Force. In 2020, they have already delivered Su-34 and Su-35S combat planes, Yak-130 and L-410UVP-E20 combat training aircraft and Mi-8 and Mi-28 helicopters in various modifications. Until the end of this year, the delivery of Il-76MD-90A and Su-57 aircraft is planned," he said.

Defense Minister Shoigu earlier said that the Defense Ministry had signed a contract on 76 Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets.

The Su-57 is a fifth-generation multirole fighter designed to destroy all types of air, ground and naval targets. The Su-57 fighter jet features stealth technology with the broad use of composite materials, is capable of developing supersonic cruising speed and is furnished with the most advanced onboard radio-electronic equipment, including a powerful onboard computer (the so-called electronic second pilot), the radar system spread across its body and some other innovations, in particular, armament placed inside its fuselage.

The Su-57 took to the skies for the first time on January 29, 2010. Compared to its predecessors, the Su-57 combines the functions of an attack plane and a fighter jet while the use of composite materials and innovation technologies and the fighter’s aerodynamic configuration ensure the low level of radar and infrared signature.

The plane’s armament will include, in particular, hypersonic missiles. The fifth-generation fighter jet has been successfully tested in combat conditions in Syria.

Russia’s Advanced Research Fund unveiled the flight demonstrator of the country’s first cyclocopter at the Army-2020 international military and technical forum on Friday.
The Advanced Research Fund intends to use the cyclocopter called Cyclone to create a full-size flying passenger vehicle for Russia’s Defense Ministry by 2024.
Cyclone Project Head from the Advanced Research Fund Grigory Makeich told TASS that the drone weighing 60 kg is already undergoing flight tests. "The task is to improve the automatic control system by the end of the year. We are planning to mount a hybrid engine to enable it to fly for over 60 minutes," he specified.
At the acceptance trials scheduled for February 2021, the cyclocopter is due to demonstrate its advantages and stated characteristics, he said.
"After that, we will switch to developing a larger vehicle capable of carrying up to six persons. We are due to test a full-size rotor system for a large vehicle in a wind-tunnel facility until the end of the year. And a full-size passenger cyclocopter is due to be created by 2024," he said.

Army 2020: Tekhodinamika unveils new high-altitude parachute for Russia's VDV

Tekhnodinamika, a subsidiary of Russian state corporation Rostec, unveiled its Stayer high-altitude parachute system, which enables airdrops from up to 10 km altitude, at the Army 2020 defence show in Kubinka. State trials of the system finished earlier this year, a Tekhnodinamika spokesperson told Janes.


The Stayer parachute was developed by the Ivanovo Polyot Parachute Plant and is intended for special unit airdrops from an altitude between 700 m and 10,000 m via Ilyushin Il-76, Antonov An-26 and An-2, Aero Vodochody L-410, and Mil Mi-8/17 aircraft flying speeds between 140 km/h and 350 km/h.


The main and backup parachutes withstand 10 g and 14 g overloads, respectively. The Stayer is capable of carrying the SKG-50 cargo subsystem that can mount a container with a 50 kg payload, armament, and oxygen subsystem. The SKG-50 works at temperatures between -40 C and 50 C and weighs about 4 kg.

Overall, the Stayer system airdrops up to 180 kg; its main and backup parachutes have service lives of 1,000 and 20 jumps respectively. The main dome works at altitudes between 800 m and 8,000 m, while the backup one works between 200 m and 2,500 m.


“The Stayer parachute system was developed under the requirements of the Ministry of Defence,” Tekhnodinamika Director General Igor Nasenkov said on 26 August. “It has passed through state trials, and there are contracts for its delivery to the Airborne Troops. We hope that the system will kindle the interest of potential customers.”


Deliveries to Russia’s Airborne Troops (VDV) are slated to start in 2021.

International sales of Russia’s Su-57 jet are not expected to take off until Russia inducts the stealth fighter into the Russian Air Force (RuAF), according to Rostec aviation complex’s Industrial Director Anatoly Serdyukov.
"It is unlikely that there will be a significant demand until we ship enough machines in our own army. So, our number one goal is to ship the aircraft to the RuAF," Serdyukov said in comments quoted by TASS. Rostec is the holding company of Sukhoi which manufactures the Su-57 and other jets under the Sukhoi brand.
Nevertheless the marketing campaign to get foreign customers interested in the Su-57 has begun with the launch of the Su-57E, the export version of the Su-57 which was displayed at the recently concluded Army 2020 event in Moscow. “Meanwhile, we offer this machine to the foreigners, we conduct our advertisement campaign," Serdyukov said, without specifying what countries exactly may become potential buyers.

In addition, The Russian Federal Service on Military-Technical Cooperation spokeswoman Maria Vorobyova disclosed earlier that several countries sent their application for purchase of the Su-57.
The RuAF order for the Su-57 could be well on its way. In May 2019, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting that 76 Su-57 fighters will be procured by the Armed Forces until 2028.
Following that Sukhoi Corp. set up a production line in Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Plant (KnAAZ) and recently has started setting up a final assembly shop to integrate the Su-57 stealth fighter jet.
"The factory of the company, Sukhoi in Komsomolsk-on-Amur carried out modernization and technical re-equipment of production, which allows us to successfully and timely fulfill the (Su-57) state defense order," General Director of PJSC Sukhoi Company Ilya Tarasenko was quoted as saying in a MoD announcement.

“As part of the state defense order, we plan to supply the Ministry of Defense with 76 Su-57 aircraft systems by 2028. Such workload allows us to ensure the dynamic development of the enterprise and assure jobs for our employees," he added.

As to exports Turkey and India could be possible buyers of the Su-57 given its price to performance ratio is much lower than the US-made F-35. However, the current Su-57 will not be able to exploit all of its advertised features without the “second stage” engine currently under development. The new engine is expected to offer increased thrust as well as super cruise capability over the current engine sourced from the Su-35.

On 26 August 2020, a new Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft made its first flight at the Ulyanovsk-Vostochny plant airfield complex. The aircraft with registration number RF-78659 (serial 0204) was built at the JSC Aviastar-SP (part of the Transport Aviation Division of the JSC United Aircraft Corporation) and it is the sixth transporter built by JSC Aviastar-SP in Ulyanovsk under a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defence.

This contract, signed in October 2012, is for the production of 39 Il-76MD-90A transport aircraft totaling USD 1.84 billion (139.42 billion rubles). In May 2020, this contract has been renegotiated and the supply of Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft has been split. Under the new conditions, the Aviastar-SP plant will deliver thirteen Il-76MD-90A aircraft by 2021 and a new contract will be signed calling for additional fourteen aircraft with deliveries until 2028.

The Il-76MD-90A that flew late August 2020, was already rolled out to the Aviastar-SP flight test station at the end of March 2020, yet it took another five months to get it in the air. It is the second aircraft completed in 2020, following the one registered RF-78658 (serial 0203), which made its maiden flight at the Ulyanovsk-Vostochny plant airfield on 17 March 17 2020. The transporter has not yet been handed over to the customer and it still continues acceptance flights. These circumstances indicate that the production programme for the Il-76MD-90A aircraft is running with some serious issues.

The first new-built Il-76MD-90A aircraft for the Russian MoD under the original 2012 contract, registered RF-78654 (serial 0108), was built at Aviastar-SP more than four years ago and handed over to the MoD in January 2016. Since then, only new Il-76MD-90A aircraft have been reaching the units of the Russian Federation - Aerospace Forces (RF VKS). Before that, Aviastar-SP built three Il-76MD-90A aircraft of the pilot batch (serials 0103-0105) in the period 2014-2015. The first two aircraft were transferred to PJSC The Beriev Taganrog Aviation Scientific and Technical Complex (TANTK) to develop a special-purpose aircraft. Thus far, the Aviastar-SP plant has built a total of ten units (including the prototype) of the Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft plus one prototype of the Il-78M-90A aerial tanker (registration number RF-78741, serial 0201).

Approval Received for First Flight of Su-30SM2 Aircraft with Powerful Engine

Regulatory approval has been received for the first flight of the Sukhoi Su-30SM2 aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Force (RuAF) equipped with the powerful AL-41F-1C engine drawn from the advanced Su-35 fighter jet.

The aircraft manufacturer, Sukhoi Corp., has signed a contract to check the readiness of the aircraft for the first flight with the new engine. The Su-30SM2, also called Super-Sukhoi is expected to take off before the end of the year, Russian publication Izvestia reported.
New radar, on-board electronics

Initially, it was planned to strengthen the armament and change the composition of the avionics. In this form, the aircraft received the designation Su-30SM1. In 2018, following the order of the President of Russia to unify the Su-30SM and Su-35S as much as possible, preparation of the version with the AL-41F-1C began. In addition, the possibility of installing the modern and powerful Irbis radar instead of the current Bars radar was also taken up. The designation of this variant was changed to Su-30SM2.
“A more powerful engine from the Su-35 will provide greater thrust allowing for an increased amount of ammunition and equipment that the plane can have on board, ”Honored Test Pilot Colonel Igor Malikov was quoted as saying by Izvestia.

Upgrade of all Russian Su-30s to Su-30SM2 standards
In the future, it is planned to completely replace the radar and bring the vehicles already in the Russian air force t to the CM2 standard. The Su-30SM in the basic configuration are the most numerous modern air assets in service with Russia and its closest allies.
During a visit to the Irkutsk Aviation Plant in August, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that by the end of the year his department plans to sign a contract for the construction of 21 Su-30SM2 fighters and 25 Yak-130 trainer aircraft. The total cost of the order will be more than RUB 100 billion.
Development work has been underway to increase combat capabilities and import substitution of foreign components on the base Su-30SM, designated "Adaptation-Su". Within its framework, the aircraft is also being finalized for the use of new air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons.

The AL-41F-1S engine is known as "product 117C." Compared with the current AL-31-FP power plant of the Su-30SM, its thrust has been increased by 16%, up to 14,500 kgf. The service life of the engine is also doubled, up to 4 thousand hours, without increasing the mass and dimensions.
Equipped with a plasma ignition system, the AL-41F-1S is more economical than the AL-31FP, which is currently installed on the Su-30 series of aircraft. With the same amount of fuel, the fighter can stay in the air longer.
The increased power is needed not only to create a reserve of traction. It is needed to power the more advanced avionics on board. Thanks to this, it became possible to install a powerful radar on the aircraft with an increased detection range of air and ground targets and to provide power to the electronic warfare system.
According to the engine developer, the new engine will simplify and reduce the cost of servicing and extend the service life of the Su-30SM already purchased by Russia and its allies.

YEKATERINBURG, September 30. /TASS/. Crews of generation 4++ multifunctional fighter-bombers Sukhoi Su-34 from an aviation division of the Central Military District, in the Chelyabinsk Region, carried out a night-time flight into the lower stratosphere and destroyed a hypothetical enemy at a supersonic speed, the district's press service said.

"During the training flights Sukhoi Su-34 crews carried out climbs to altitudes of about 15 kilometers, into the lower stratosphere. Upon achieving supersonic speeds they practiced interception and elimination of a hypothetical enemy. The crews operated totally on their own, without contacting air defense stations on the ground, which made the task more complex," the news release reads.

In October last year, an air regiment of the Central Military District completed a program for rearmament to obtain the newest generation 4++ planes. The last three jets were redeployed to the Chelyabinsk Region in the last move that completed the formation of a second squadron of Sukhoi Su-34.

Russia's frontline bomber Su-34

The Sukhoi Su-34 (NATO's reporting name Fullback) is a two-seat all-weather frontline bomber, converted from the frontline fighter jet Sukhoi Su-27. It was developed at the Sukhoi Design Bureau under chief designer Rollan Martirosov.


The plane's main task is to destroy ground, surface and air targets and air defense-protected infrastructures located away from the airbase. It is capable of effectively delivering strikes amid enemy resistance round the clock in good and bad weather with a variety of weapons, and of conducting air reconnaissance. The plane's combat features enable it to enter into highly maneuverable duels with enemy fighter jets and cope with combat missions independently without escort fighters.

The Sukhoi Su-34 performed its first flight on April 13, 1990. It was authorized for service on March 20, 2014. The maximum speed near the surface is 1,400 kilometers per hour, and at high altitudes, 1,900 kilometers per hour; range of flight - 4,500 kilometers without refueling and 7,000 kilometers with midair refueling; and altitude - 14,650 meters.

Weaponry: 30 mm gun GSh-30-1 and 12 weapon stations for air-to-air or air-to-surface missiles of different types, unguided rockets and aerial bombs.

Since September 30, 2015, Sukhoi Su-34 jets have participated in combat operations in Syria as part of Russia's Aerospace Force Group. The fighter-bombers successfully attacked militants' infrastructures and manpower. Some flew sorties from the Khmeimim air base in Syria and others from the Hamadan airbase in Iran.

The future Russian light military transport aircraft Ilyushin Il-112V has been spotted at the test base of the aircraft plant in Voronezh *.

The aircraft, with registration RF-41400 (construction number 01-01) and coded 01 yellow, is the first example of the type which started taxi trials back in December 2018 and took to the air for the first time on 30 March 2019. The Ilyushin has been undergoing factory flight trials since 18 June 2019.

Another prototype, c/n 01-02, been built for static and fatigue tests at the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, Zhukovsky), while the production of the third and fourth Il-112V already started in Voronezh back in 2019.

The Il-112V is the first military transporter developed by Russia from scratch in the post-Soviet period. The work on the aircraft's development has been going on since 2014 and has suffered some setbacks mainly due to increased weight which resulted in shorter than anticipated flight range.

The Il-112V is designed to carry up to 5 tonnes of cargo and personnel and is able to accommodate 44 armed soldiers. The Ilyushin Aviation Complex (JSC IL) is developing the aircraft to replace the ageing An-26 and An-24 turbo-prop tarnsporters. The Il-112V shall come in two modifications: the Il-112V military hauler and the Il-112T for civil aviation.

Once tested, the series production of the new aircraft can be launched in 2022. Using existing production facilities, the Voronezh factory is able to produce up to 12 aircraft annually, higher output requires additional investments. Thus far, the Russian Federation - Aerospace Forces (RF VKS) have expressed interest in buying approximately 100 aircraft.

Russian missile industry is in its impressive period but no one knows how they will perform against an army using very advanced jammers and electronic counter measure technics. Being Battle-proven is an important factor to determine the real performance of the systems.

Russia announces plans to receive new Il-112V aircraft in 2023


Russian Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov has announced that country’s Defense Ministry to receive new serial Ilyushin Il-112V aircraft from 2023.

“We should additionally transfer two prototype aircraft to the Defense Ministry for subsequent state trials by 2021 year-end and upon completion we expect to supply first serially made aircraft to the Defense Ministry since 2023,” the minister said.

The Il-112V is the first military transport plane developed in Russia from scratch in the post-Soviet period.

“We have modern aircraft, with the good export potential in place. Therefore, we will work in parallel not merely for the primary customer, which is the base one, and under export orders too,” Manturov noted. The Voronezh Aircraft Plant is ready to produce up to 15 airplanes annually, considering the replacement plans for a large number of aircraft by 2030, he added.
The Il-112V is the first military transport plane developed in Russia from scratch in the post-Soviet period.
The work on the plane’s development has been going on since 2014. The Il-112V is designed to carry up to 5 tonnes of cargoes and transport personnel. Russia is developing the plane to replace An-26 and An-24 turbo-prop planes. The plane will come in two modifications: one for civil aviation (the Il-112T) and the other as a military transport aircraft (the Il-112V).
According to multiple reports, Russia’s Defense Ministry intended to purchase 62 Il-112V planes.
