Bangladesh is in talks with South Korea to acquire advanced submarines as part of its plan to enhance the country’s underwater naval capabilities.
The development came to light during a seminar titled “Navigating Geopolitical Dynamics: Toward a Korea-Bangladesh Future Partnership,” where Dr Song Kyungjin, country representative of South Korea at The Asia Foundation, shared insights into the growing security cooperation between the two nations.
She was joined by South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Park Young-sik.
Dr Song noted that the first-ever Bangladesh–Korea Navy-to-Navy Staff talks were held in October, focusing on maritime security, defence production, and broader strategic cooperation. “Our priority is to safeguard freedom of navigation, promote cooperation, and enhance maritime security,” she said.
Highlighting South Korea’s expanding maritime engagement, Dr Song mentioned that the Korean Navy and Coast Guard have been holding increasing numbers of bilateral meetings and capacity-building programmes with partner countries in the region.
When contacted, Bangladesh Ambassador to South Korea Toufic Islam Shatil appears to admit that discussions were underway. “I heard that Bangladesh is negotiating with several countries, including South Korea, to buy submarines,” he said.
