Bangladesh: Muhammad Yunus to head interim government

08/06/2024August 6, 2024

Economist and civil society leader Muhammad Yunus will lead Bangladesh's interim government, the presidency has said. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country amid a violent uprising.

Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus will lead Bangladesh's interim government after the resignation of Premier Sheikh Hasina, according to President Mohammad Shahabuddin office.

Student leaders of protests in Bangladesh had said they do not want an army-led interim government but rather one advised by Yunus.

The announcement came after a meeting with Bangladesh's army chief, General Waker-uz-Zaman, who said the previous day that an interim government would be formed, without giving details about who would lead it.

Bangladesh's president also dissolved the parliament on Tuesday.

The dissolution of the legislature had been a key demand of the protesters.

Yunus' office had earlier confirmed Tuesday that he has agreed to be an adviser for an interim government before he was announced as chief.

In an interview with India's The Print, Yunus said Bangladesh had been "an occupied country" under Hasina.

"Today, all the people of Bangladesh feel liberated," he added.

This is going to be insane if stand in election. 95% of older people will vote for BNP. I was planning to vote for them too. But if he stand in election (I doubt he would) I may end up voting for him. I think all the students will do the same.

This news don't says it all. But if came after long meeting between protest organizers and the President, three chiefs of armed forces and other high level officials. President has agreed to their demand to include doctor yunus in the interim government.

Imagine being some random young men, no one knew your names three weeks ago. And then suddenly you are negotiating with the president on national government formation. This is gotta be a really unique story for gen Z in history of the world.

I'd like to see yunus in this interim period and as long as possible. Sound moderate, technocrat, good connect with the people through grameen etc.

This can be the kind of thing to long term change BD politics for the better too....especially if good merit based party forms around Yunus with future political careers there.

Its time to do away with BAL, BNP etc (they have too much baggage and corruption) and reform some new things for this century....and earn good credibility and trust with BD population long term (we are from you rather than you are our pawns etc).

BAL and BNP ofc arent going to recede so easily.

I had to check his age (was hoping for 70s)...but hes 84 though. He looks younger than that to me, hope a long life for him and best for him.

Yunus was fulcrum of conversation between me and my best BD buddy in real life when we were on long driving trip together.

Grameen, nobel prize, but at that point of time, Hasina had reacted in loud way against Yunus announcing his entry into politics (as grenade attack on her earlier was raw in her mind still - combined with existing defensive + BAL ego mode).

That was when he explained to me at quite some depth (given his dad is big corp. guy in BD, bonafide rags to riches story, a muktijodda too, one of best Bong elderfolk you can meet and know), about BAL/SHW and BNP too.... he gave very fair objective take (his dad has had to rub shoulders with both, even served as minister in BNP time in one technocratic area). It still forms a good 50% chunk basis of my political knowledge for BD.

But with all that in mind, this is why its good to see potential arc for Yunus to have in politics now. Hope he lives long for that though. BD needs him around.

If not and these things stick, you are starting new phases of something you do not want to entrench. I can tell you that right now.

A thought brother, from another mother....you're alright in my books Intisab Shahriyar...

And the consequences of your actions,is it getting better?

Some people are asking this type of question like if she steps down/gets killed by mob then who will be the alternative? This is waaay too early to answer these type of questions. First thing people need to do is removing this fascist.

There are lots of problem we'll have to deal with after this like making a corruption, extortion, oppression, nepotism free, democratic country free from other countries clutches. It'll take years to achieve it, won't be an easy path.

Bad guys never resign easily. Sacrifice will be necessary.

P.S:- The part above was written before Hasina bibi fled country. Now we've achieved our first goal!! ✊ I had a great experience for four days. Got a great story to tell. Hopefully I will share some of our photos & videos Inshallah!! Lots of things to say & discuss now that I've free time.

Hasina fled the country and can come back to power again unless she stands trial in BD. Let me remind you of how it went in Pakistan.

I don't know dr. Yunus, but will believe in your enthusiasm and joy. I however believe that it's necessary to introduce reformist people and powers to root out what has taken root since Hasina came to power.

I just hope that Tarikats don't lift their heads too much or get too much to say. They're the last you want in any kind of power play.

Well, BAL has gone extinct. Hassina won't ever going to come back. It was a revolution as the title suggest. Of course, there is lot of works need to be done as @Isa Khan pointed out.

There will be no peace whatsoever.

We are coming after them

You are staying where you are.
Whatever she might have been, I don't like her pro Indian stance , she lifted 20 million people out of poverty.
At least that can be given to her.
At least some poor kids can eat and wash themselves and who knows get some education.
" We" never have been useful to anyone. At least, I can't see any proof of it.
By the way, you ain't a Bengali, nothing to do with you.

No am not Bengali, but if my religion is put under attack be it you a Bengali, a Turk, an Arab or an Indian

I will go after you and your interests and whatever you deem worth.

Bangladesh under Hasina is just the classic example of the situation of the Islamic world in the XX and XXI century : The population is Muslim but the secular government on top of them impose their will to put aside Islam outside of the public sphere by imprisoning, torturing the people who call to Islam.

Right now, these secularists are down one by one.

The beauty of Secularism.

Hindus in charge of prisons in Muslim countries.

When 7% of your population is Hindus they are gonna get positions in jobs.If people have a problem they should have done a full population transfer in 47.They didnt have the balls for it so both sides are responsible for the well being of minorities.

Oh yes, they happen to find jobs in the security sector than lets say in the markets.

Lookey here am not stupid, I know how it works in "secular' countries. The Indonesian secret service was once led by a Catholics. Yes, you heard that right, in the largest Muslim populated state, the security body is headed by a Catholics.

So this is not surprising for me to see Muslims killed in a prison...headed by a Hindu...in a majority Muslim country which happens to be headed by Secularists.
Oh its not if the largest hindu country had a muslim president oh wait they had and many have even become chief ministers or central ministers. Secularism aint a one way street bud and Man is complaining about secret service being headed by minorities lol. May be what you saying is minorities shouldn't get any government job?

The fact that India had a Muslim president showcases nothing. India is still (even when they pretended hard that their country is secular) a Hindu State. That president you mentioned, did his job to the service of this Hindu state against an Islamic (sort of ) state which is Pakistan.

Things are not the same in Muslim countries. In Indonesia for example, these minorities entered the security body and the government and they just straight up use their power to persecute the majority Muslims living in that country. Which happens to be the same in Bangladesh from the look of it.

We've had 4, not "a".

Okay

India is a constitutionally secular country, that's what matters. Speculations of nobodies won't determine zilch.

They served as the President and Supreme Commander of The Indian Armed Forces as what the constitution sanctions the post to do. Not our fault that one of our enemy is an Islamic Republic.

You think this never happens in India?

"From the look of it", any statistical data or inputs?

Yes, they use these official titles to somewhat covers things up. Because if they instead use the title " President and Supreme Commander of The Hindu Armed Forces" , now that would be too obvious.

My point remains, just because some nominally 'Muslim' get the job. It means shit, because whatever their position is, they are using their capacity to serve an enemy society (in this case Hindu India).

Secularism, which is rampant in Muslim land from the XX century, gave the illusion that different society could live side by side, this is not true and dangerous. . The enemy uses this to infiltrate posts in the government, and then came up with policies and actions that harms the Muslims.

Now it's becoming clear from the image in Bangladesh, what Secularist Hasina brought, I sincerely hope that the Muslims in that country understand that there is no other political model worthy of struggle other than Islam. Secularism has failed Muslims from Morocco to Indonesia, it's time to have a second thought.

I mean I just gave you an image from one of its prisons. statistics or no statistic is now irrelevant.

"Cover up" what exactly? India neither is a Hindu country nor is the President of the Republic of India some religious post. They serve as the President of the country, of the people of India.

So you want to say Hindus are enemies of Muslims by default? Wow. At least some extremists are honest about their ideologies, I'll let you know when the next al qaeda recruitment form is out!

This is a 2 way street, I can also argue how secularism has yielded into a net negative for the majority Hindu community in various ways, especially taxation on Mandirs while exceptions to other places of worship.

I'm pretty sure the most successful Muslim countries are all secular or liberal, be it Turkey, UAE etc. The ones where people like you get in majority end up being like Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, or even Bangladesh now.
