Many overlook BGB’s role beyond border guarding. It manages smuggling control, riverine terrain challenges, and coordination gaps, where real issue is ground-level communication, not manpower alone.

A new Border Outpost (BOP) has been inaugurated in Mauchosha under Birol upazila of Dinajpur to strengthen Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) operations in securing the frontier and preventing smuggling and other cross-border crimes.

The outpost was inaugurated today (16 April) by BGB North-West Rangpur Region Commander Brigadier General ASM Nasher, who hoisted the national flag, according to a BGB-42 media statement. He also planted a mango sapling on the BOP premises.

Despite the presence of adverse conditions, Nasher stated that BGB remains operational 24/7 to protect sovereignty and prevent illicit activities along the border. He noted that special check posts have been set up to curb smuggling of fuel and edible oil, and intelligence surveillance has been strengthened.

He expressed hope that cooperation from local communities and objective media reporting would help reduce border crimes to zero.

The new Mauchosha BOP, which is situated near the zero line between Kishoriganj and Ramchandrapur BOPs under Dinajpur Battalion (42 BGB), will assist in the prevention of drug trafficking, human trafficking, and unlawful infiltration, according to him.

The security operations across the roughly 99-kilometre border under Dinajpur Battalion (42 BGB) are anticipated to be further enhanced with the addition of the new outpost.

Senior officials, including Dinajpur Sector Commander Colonel Mohammad Faisal Hasan Khan and Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Al Moin Hasan, were present.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has intensified border surveillance using modern technology, including radar systems, thermal cameras, drones and smart digital monitoring equipment, to curb smuggling, terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking and infiltration along the country’s frontiers.

Guarding Bangladesh’s 4,427-kilometre border as a vigilant force, the BGB has reinforced round-the-clock monitoring in sensitive areas through technology-driven patrols and observation systems.

Speaking to BSS, BGB Headquarters Director (Operations) Lieutenant Colonel Md Mahbub Murshed Rahman said the force is conducting regular patrols and special drives to prevent cross-border crimes and ensure seamless border security.

He said radar systems, thermal imaging cameras and high-speed boats are being deployed to strengthen surveillance in remote hill tracts, riverine regions and dense forest areas, including the Sundarbans.

“BGB personnel are performing their duties tirelessly in challenging terrains and adverse weather conditions. Observation posts and smart surveillance systems have been installed in sensitive border zones to enhance security measures,” he added.

The BGB official also said the force maintains regular flag meetings and coordinated patrols with India’s Border Security Force (BSF) to preserve stability and a cooperative atmosphere along the border.

Officials said the paramilitary force is being transformed into a modern, technology-driven border guarding agency in line with international standards through manpower expansion, new battalions, expanded Border Outposts (BOPs) and infrastructural development projects.

Experts stressed the importance of stronger surveillance and intelligence-based operations to combat border crimes.

Associate Professor and crime analyst Dr Towhidul Haque of the University of Dhaka said stricter monitoring and tougher action against organised smuggling syndicates are essential to ensuring border security.

According to BGB data, the force seized smuggled goods worth over Tk 1,534 crore and recovered narcotics valued at nearly Tk 400 crore during anti-smuggling and anti-drug drives conducted across the country over the past six months.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion-55 has intensified security operations along the Habiganj border amid growing concerns over push-ins from India, deploying thermal drones, reinforcing round-the-clock patrols, and launching a community awareness drive involving local residents.

The highest level of alert has been issued across the border area, said Lt Col Md Tanzilur Rahman, commanding officer of BGB-55.

Local residents, village police, and Ansar-VDP members have also joined the efforts to guard every part of the border.

Thermal and infrared drones are being used for night surveillance, while the scope of yard meetings has been expanded, the BGB official said, adding that there will be no compromise when it comes to protecting the country’s sovereignty and security.

He confirmed that no infiltration through the Habiganj border has been recorded so far, though the battalion remains on heightened alert following a recent rise in push-in incidents reported at different points across the country.

The battalion is responsible for guarding a 103.2-kilometre stretch of the border in Habiganj district, which is monitored continuously from 16 Border Outposts. Patrols have been intensified at each outpost and intelligence surveillance significantly expanded in recent days, he said.

Awareness meetings, surveillance activities, and community engagement programmes are being conducted regularly in all border areas, with locals playing a key role in monitoring and reporting suspicious activities, he added.

On Saturday night, BGB personnel carried out precautionary miking in several border localities, urging residents to remain vigilant. Yard meetings have also been held to encourage border communities to report suspicious individuals or activities to the BGB without delay.

Residents of the border areas welcomed the initiative. Majnu Mia, a van driver from Guibil area of Chunarughat upazila, said the night-time miking had raised awareness among locals. "We feel safe knowing they are guarding the border day and night."

Mohan Lal, a tea worker from Teliapara in Madhabpur upazila, said, "The BGB briefings were informative. They explained in detail what push-ins are and how to identify suspicious people. We are now much more aware."

The government has announced the use of drones, antidrones, mine detectors and bodyorn cameras to increase the capacity of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in border security.

Security Analyst Air Commodore (Ret) Ishfaq Elahi Chowdhury told Desh Panwar, ‘The decision to install drones and mine detectors on the border is a good aspect. Due to the recent war situation in Myanmar, mines have been planted on the border, BGB also needs mine detectors. The government has informed about its decision in this regard, the task of the concerned forces is to make it effective. Several terrorist groups are active in Chittagong Hill Tracts. Arakan Army planted mines on the border due to the war situation, causing innocent people to suffer accidents. It is also important to identify these deadly weapons.’

DHAKA, Sept 16, 2026 (BSS) - Two newly-constructed Temporary Operational Bases (TOBs) have been inaugurated at Aracchatala Tila and Haturani Tila along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Ghumdhum Union of Naikhyangchhari upazila in Bandarban district.

The new TOBs will further strengthen the surveillance and operational capabilities of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) along the frontier, said a press release issued here this evening.

BGB Cox's Bazar Region Commander Brigadier General Kazi Samsher Uddin formally inaugurated the two TOBs this morning.

During the inauguration, the region commander inspected various facilities of the TOBs and gave necessary instructions to the BGB personnel deployed there to perform their duties with utmost vigilance, professionalism and efficiency to ensure border security, the release said.

He said the newly-constructed TOBs would make BGB's surveillance and patrolling along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border more effective and dynamic.

The TOBs would also enhance the force's operational capabilities in preventing drug trafficking, smuggling and illegal infiltration, as well as in ensuring the safety and security of people living in the border areas, he
continued.

The new facilities would enable BGB personnel to respond swiftly to any situation, particularly in remote and vulnerable areas along the border, the commander added.

BGB Ramu Sector Commander Colonel Md Anwar-ul-Alam and Cox's Bazar Battalion (34 BGB) Commander Lieutenant Colonel SM Khairul Alam, along with other BGB officers and members were present at the inauguration, the release added.

Similar clash like in 2019 happened between BGB-BSF in 2005. They were also not wearing uniform like the 2019's incident. India as usual blamed us and called the incident "pre-planned and pre-meditated".

Bangladesh yesterday categorically condemned the "willful and unprovoked attack" by the Border Security Force (BSF) of India near Akhaura border on Saturday last.

The government of Bangladesh, however, reaffirmed its commitment to maintain peace and tranquillity in the frontier areas by resolving all bilateral issues peacefully through dialogue.

"It is clear that the BSF forces deliberately intruded into Bangladesh territory and opened fire, leaving a Bangladeshi girl dead," said a foreign ministry spokesman when asked to comment on the incident.

Pointing out facts of the incident, the spokesperson stated that the trouble started at around 5:30pm when the BSF men and armed Indian civilians illegally entered Bangladesh territory and attacked the residents of Nurpur village, ransacked property, looted valuables and tried to abduct Bangladeshi villagers.

"The villagers alerted a BDR patrol that went to the spot. When the BDR patrols approached the village, the BSF personnel took position on the ground and opened fire on the patrols and villagers. As a result, a ten-year-old Bangladeshi girl was struck by bullet and died on the spot," he said.

The Indian Border Security Force also mobilised troops on the border at the time.

"The BDR had no option but to open fire in self-defence," he said, adding, "Although the BDR exercised maximum restraint, the BSF continued to fire on the BDR men for some time."

After firing had stopped, two BSF personnel - one officer and one soldier were found dead 250 yards inside Bangladesh territory near the village. "It was difficult to identify the officer, as he was not wearing uniform. He was later identified as Jeevan Kumar, assistant commandant of the BSF."

The two were handed over to the BSF at 00:01 hrs on April 17 through a Battalion Commandant-level meeting.

The spokesperson termed the incident "unfortunate and regrettable". He noted that the incident occurred despite Bangladesh's sincere efforts to maintain peace and tranquillity along the international border and the agreement at the just- concluded BDR-BSF talks that both the border forces would show maximum restraint.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan yesterday hoped that the coordinated border patrol would help defuse tensions and reduce the trans-border crimes substantially.

"Since we've a long 4002-km porous border with India, many incidents can take place. But this is quite unnatural to think that such incidents will affect our good relations," he told reporters commenting on the BDR-BSF exchange of fire on Akhaura frontier on Saturday that left several casualties on both sides, including a Bangladeshi girl.

Expressing the hope that such incidents would not recur, the foreign minister said the BDR and BSF would take joint effort to maintain peace along the border between the two neighbours.

The BDR-BSF director general-level meeting that concluded in Dhaka on April 16 decided to take necessary steps to start the joint patrolling. The decision was first taken at a home secretary-level meeting in Dhaka last year.

He said the BSF members entered Bangladesh territory and attacked the residents of Nurpur village in Brahmanbaria. As the BDR personnel approached the village, the BSF opened fire, resulting in the death of a girl.

The situation was controlled through flag meeting between the two border forces.

Our B'baria correspondent reported that Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) personnel yesterday recovered one rifle, one magazine with 18 bullets and a wireless set from Hirapur village under Akhaura upazila.

BDR sources said the BSF men left these while fleeing the village during Saturday's clash.
