Summer brings an abundance of native fruits, and among them, mangoes are in high demand.
Often called the king of fruits, mangoes are celebrated for their unique taste and rich nutritional value. There are many varieties, each with its distinct flavour.
Among the varieties available in the country, Amrapali mangoes are quite popular and often referred to as the queen of mangoes due to their exceptional taste. The naming of this mango variety has an interesting history.
According to agriculturists and historians, Amrapali was named after an ancient Indian dancer. This name was chosen to honour her.
History tells us that around 2,500 years ago, there was a kingdom called Vaishali in ancient India. There is no proper record of her birth, parents and early life. She was given this name because she was found under a mango tree in the royal gardens of Vaishali.
Etymologically speaking, the name is derived from the two roots, "Amra" (meaning mango) and "Pallawa" (meaning tiny sprouts or leaves). Incidentally, her legend originated in the Jataka Tales, which were penned about 1,500 years ago.
A person named Mahanaman found her when she was a child. Lured by her great beauty, he abandoned his kingdom and set up residence in Ambara village, a small hamlet in Vaishali.
Ambapali, also known as Ambika or Amrapali, grew into a very beautiful woman and became the best dancer in the state. Her beauty and talent captivated everyone, leading to conflicts over her. Eventually, she was declared the city bride of Vaishali. In her later years, she is said to have spent her time in the company of Gautama Buddha.

আপনি জানেন? বাংলাদেশে ঈদুল আযহার নামটাও বদলে গিয়েছিল । মুসলিমরা নিজেদের ইচ্ছে মতো পশু কুরবানির অধিকার থেকে ছিল বঞ্চিত । হি\ন্দু জমিদারদের শো,ষণের ভয়ে এ অঞ্চলের মুসলিম পূর্বপুরুষেরা ‘বকরি-খাসি’ কুরবানি করতে বাধ্য হতো।

ইচ্ছে হলেও বড় একটি গরু কুরবানি করে আত্মীয়, গরিব, অসহায়দের মাঝে ব্যাপকভাবে বিতরণের পথ ছিল রুদ্ধ। চাপিয়ে দেওয়া হয়েছিল গরু জ%বাইয়ের ওপর কড়াকড়ি নিষেধাজ্ঞা। তাই কেবলই ‘বকরি-খাসি’ কুরবানি দেওয়ার প্রচলন চলতে থাকায়, ভার/তবর্ষে ঈদুল আযহার নাম বদলে হয়ে যায় “ বকরি ঈদ/বকরা ঈদ ”।

সাহিত্যিক আবুল মনসুর আহমদ নিজ আত্মজীবনীতে লিখেন: 'বক্রা ঈদে গরু কুরবানি কেউ করিত না। কারণ জমিদারের তরফ হইতে উহা কড়াকড়িভাবে নিষিদ্ধ ছিল। খাসি-বকরি কুরবানি করা চলিত।'

আজ থেকে ১১৮ বছর আগে চাঁদপুর জেলার কথা। এক ঈদুল আযহায় ৩ জন মিলে গরু কুরবানি করেন। এতে ‘গোপাল চন্দ্র মজুমদার’ নামে এক হি*ন্দু লোক মামলা করে তিনজনের বিরুদ্ধে। শেষমেশ গরু কুরবানি করা ও পানিতে গরুর মাংস ধোয়ার অযুহাতে ৩ জন মুসলিমকেই দ,ন্ড দেয় জেলা হাকিম ‘জগদীশচন্দ্র সেন’। তাঁদের একজনকে দেওয়া হয় ১ মাসের কারাদন্ড। বাকী দুইজনকে মোটা অঙ্কের জরিমানা করা হয়। [‘বাংলাদেশের উৎসব’ বইয়ের ৩৪ তম পৃষ্ঠায় এ বিষয়ে আলোচনা রয়েছে]।

এধরনের শাস্তির ভয়ে গরু কুরবানি করার রেওয়াজ বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। জমিদারের ভয়ে গরু কুরবানির নামও মুখে আনতে ভয় পেত এই অঞ্চলের মুসলিম পূর্বপুরুষেরা।

সেসময়ও এ ধরনের শো.ষণ,জুলুমের বিরুদ্ধে ইসলামি প্রকাশনা প্রতিষ্ঠান ও মাসিকপত্রে লেখালেখি চলতো। টাঙ্গাইল থেকে প্রকাশিত বিখ্যাত মাসিকপত্র “আখবারে এসলামীয়া”- এর সম্পাদক ছিলেন মৌলবী নঈমুদ্দীন। বিচক্ষন এই আলেম ও সম্পাদক একবার এক জনসভায় বক্তব্য দেন।

তিনি সেখানে গরু জ%বাইয়ের বিরোধিতাকারী এক মুসলিম সাহিত্যিকের তীব্র সমালোচনা করেন। তখন নঈমুদ্দীন সাহেবকে মানহানী মামলা দেওয়া হয়। ভালো খবর হলো- মৌলবীর পক্ষে দাঁড়িয়ে যায় স্কুল, কলেজ ও মাদ্রাসার সাধারন ছাত্ররা। ঢাকা কলেজ ( Dhaka College, মাদ্রাসা, পোগোজ স্কুল (বর্তমান Pogose Laboratory School and College) , জগন্নাথ কলেজ ( বর্তমান Jagannath University) , সার্ভে কলেজ, ঢাকা মেডিক্যালের মেধাবী ছাত্ররা ঢাকা শহরে মৌলবী নঈমুদ্দীনের পক্ষে জনসভার আয়োজন করে৷

There is a total curfew in place at the moment given the protests and riots that have escalated.
The BD govt has basically shut off all comms inside and to outside world, including the internet.
So it will take some time for our forum friends in BD to get access to our forum again.
Most of my real life BD friends in Canada are unable to get in touch with their families back home etc.... last a number of them heard was the army was closing in and arresting a whole lot of ppl/organisers/leaders etc they deemed at the top of things.
The BD supreme court has pared back a lot of what set off the current atmosphere (when last month a high court gave the quota ruling)...but the student leaders are making some more new demands (govt ministers to resign etc) given the over-reaction they say of police and govt etc.
It might take some time basically before we see our BD posters back in forum given blackwall of comms right now enforced.

Yep, I realized it by checking of the login patterns of our friends correlating with the imposed communications ban. I hope everything is alright with them and troubles just past them by without doing them harm.

Yes, they deployed troops. Police got overwhelmed initially. Army is still in the Capital. It wouldn't probably be wise to talk about specifics in a public forum right now. Maybe when things cools down more in a month or so. But I will say this, it was unprecedented. This government faced many protests in last 18 years but never placed a curfew. And total shut down of all comms for 5 days is also something that never happened before.
Yes, Supreme court scraped the previous rulling by High Court. Previously 56% government job qouta was reserved for specific groups. Among that, Staggering 30% was reserved for freedom fighters and their close relative.
Only problem was, actual freedom fighters and their close relatives percentage is no more than 1 realistically. So, it was systemically problematic from the very beginning. I don't have to explain to you how such massive qouta can be exploited by powerful fractions in a third world country.
Now according to the new ruling by Supreme court, 93% job will be allocated based on merit. 5% qouta is for the freedom fighters and their relatives and 1% for ethnic minority and 1% for people with disabilities.

Glad to hear you are OK. Hopefully soon you are able to get over to mother's place.
My thoughts and prayers are with the BD people in these testing times.
I was getting constant update from my BD buddy network in Canada/US, so yeah I have to large degree some measure of number of details that transpired, that will take long time to get through right now.
So like you said we will see how it all settles down and discussion arises about it.....given scale of what happened and the clear perceived threat BD Govt/regime senses from it.
Yes we cannot share too much on public fora for sure.
