This was before your time I bet heh.
Back then I wasn't even an idea yet, oh what a glorious time for the world that was haha
I was a teenager (in Singapore at the time) watching this on the news.

I remember it was front page news when the F-117 got shot down.
What were the reactions then? Do you still remember yours?

I remember thinking a superweapon is not quite "all that" in the end.

Stealth had been given tons of extra soft propaganda in the overall discourse to that point...especially with advent of the F-22 raptor.

Some took it too far in the other direction that now a cheaper conventional system could always find a way to defeat all stealth platforms...in this case with enough longwave, amplitude, triangulation, networking (and probability analysis).

Issue is lot of anti-stealth propaganda proponents didn't quite factor in what SEAD would and can do to deal with such hardpoints first in a more general conflict (Kosovo was not one, though USAF did underestimate the AD threat in this case).

It was really my first look deeper into radars and aerial doctrine past the basics I knew till that point.

There was heated discussion on all of this in a (relative early) online defence forum I was member of at that time heh.....some friends from it I still remain in touch with.

I've been to a German family once when I was younger and the family asked me to leave because it was dinner time. So weird.

its basic human kindness to share your next meal or snacks with guests. It is genuinely weird , this ''concept'' of not offering food to guests baffles me.

Could it be because they eat pork?

Yeah it was the same here in the Netherlands with me. One of the most awkward moments of my life, mainly cuz I used to opportunity to steal my friends toy car. Little shit was bragging about it. We can laugh about it now tho :)

I dont know, but if my family had a vegetarian as a guest, my mother would have made sure that our guest would get something vegetarian.

Med and middle eastern cultures are very giving.

I visited an Italian family once as a kid I have to say they were really giving.

This twitter thread potentially has some answers as to the background of this phenomenon in Northern Europe:

Among other bits:

And reduction of conflict, they created a society that minimized the creation of debt and obligation, and maximized the ability of the individual/family to be self sufficient. This “not feeding the neighbor kids” weirdness Is about maintaining peace in the community.

Wonder what you all guys think.....and what has your experience been @Blackbeardsgoldfish ?

I mentioned to another a similar inherited bandaid is found in modern Japan w.r.t showing less outward emotion (esp smiling and frowning). i.e Older societal codes, population explosion + urbanisation proximity in modern era and yet need to retain civic peace and stability all the same.....leads to various peculiarities to the world "norm"

Those countries are very individualistic while the Med, Middle East and India are very colllective.

Just speaking from my experience here, generally you'll be invited for coffee/tea and something to go along with that, e.g. biscuits, cake or the very popular "Reindling" in southern Austria. But partaking in lunch or dinner with the rest of the family is uncommon, though getting invited to sit down at the table and eat along if possible/or something else that's available is usually done when you're in the house. That's what I personally experienced anyway.

If that isn't the case and you're being left out or asked to leave, then that's just rude imo. Whenever we had guests over or would meet up with people, we'd take snacks and drinks with us and eat together.

Though I think that the map displayed is too imprecise and doesn't take rural and urban differences into account, and I would like to know how much and from where the data got collected.

The government today fought to defuse anger in various countries and opposition attacks at home over comments on Prophet Muhammad by two BJP leaders - one has now been expelled and the other suspended.

  1. Top officials tried to manage the diplomatic fallout as nations including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE, Iran, Jordan, Afghanistan, Bahrain and Indonesia demanded an apology from the government for allowing the derogatory remarks.
  2. On Sunday, envoys in the Gulf were summoned amid widespread calls on social media for a boycott of Indian goods in the Gulf.
  3. The foreign ministry said in a statement the offensive tweets and comments "did not, in any way, reflect the views of the government. These are the views of fringe elements".
  4. A senior official at the Qatar Embassy in New Delhi said Modi's government must publicly distance itself from the comments. "Hurting our religious sentiments can directly impact economic ties," Reuters quoted the official as saying.
  5. The United Arab Emirates condemned statements by the BJP spokesperson, expressing its denunciation and rejection of insults of the Prophet Muhammad. It further underscored the need to respect religious symbols and not violate them, as well as confront hate speech and violence
  6. The BJP suspended spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled another leader, Naveen Jindal, over the controversial comments.
  7. The comments were made by Nupur Sharma during a TV debate last week in the backdrop of a series of communal incidents across the country. BJP media chief Naveen Jindal posted a tweet about the Prophet, which he later deleted.
  8. In a statement on Sunday, the BJP said it is "strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion" and "does not promote such people or philosophy".
  9. India's trade with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which includes Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman and the UAE, stood around $90 billion in 2020-21. Millions of Indians live and work in GCC countries.
  10. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in recent years has strengthened economic ties with the energy-rich nations, the top source for country's fuel imports.

With India and the European Union (EU) formally resuming negotiations for proposed agreements on trade, investments and geographical indications (GI), Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said implementation of these pacts would help unleash the significant untapped potential for enhancing economic ties between the two regions.

India and the EU on June 17 formally resumed negotiations on the proposed agreements, after a gap of over eight years.

Goyal said they were here to relaunch the negotiations for a fair, equitable and balanced free trade agreement (FTA) between the EU and India.

"We have our teams in place...It will further strengthen our relations. Our bilateral trade has grown significantly in the last few months...There is a significant untapped potential which we will hope to unleash with the execution of these three agreements -- trade , investment and GIs," he told reporters here.

India had started negotiations for a trade pact, dubbed the Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA), with the 27-country economic bloc in 2007, but the talks stalled in 2013 as both sides failed to reach an agreement on key issues, including customs duties on automobiles and spirits, and the movement of professionals.

Asked about the key demands from the Indian side, Goyal said India wishes to engage with the world on modern products and look at areas where it can gain in terms of new technology and investments.

"All cards are on the table and we are coming with an open heart and an open mind... Agreements do not have to always be about gain or demands, I think agreements also have to be which is good for both negotiating teams and for the people," he said.

He added that there was a time when India was "super sensitive" on issues like gender and sustainability, but in the last few years, the country has demonstrated to the world "very deep commitment on these subjects".

"We are looking at technology, we are looking at long term larger finance and low cost in order to transition much faster on the sustainable side," he added. European Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis said both sides are aiming for an ambitious and comprehensive FTA.

When asked about the major demands of the EU on automobile, wines and sustainability issues, he said, "According to WTO (World Trade Organisation) standards, these kinds of agreements have to cover essentially all trade. There can be some specific exemptions...As regards sustainability, I will say no modern agreement in the EU is possible without ambitious trade and sustainable development chapters."

These chapters typically cover issues related to employment, broader environment, human and labour rights, he added. "The next round of negotiations will take place from June 27 till July 1 in New Delhi. We are pursuing an ambitious timeline and we aim to conclude the talks by the end of 2023," Dombrovskis said.

The EU and India are already major trading partners, with an annual trade of 120 billion Euros. The EU is India's third largest trade partner, accounting for almost 11 percent of Indian trade in 2021. India is the EU's 10th most important trading partner, accounting for just over 2 percent of EU trade in 2021. This relatively small share of overall EU trade in goods points to a large untapped potential, he added.

India's merchandise exports to EU member countries stood at about USD 65 billion in 2021-22, while imports aggregated to USD 51.4 billion. A GI is primarily an agricultural, natural or a manufactured product (handicrafts and industrial goods) originating from a definite geographical territory.

Typically, such a name conveys an assurance of quality and distinctiveness, which is essentially attributable to the place of its origin. The famous goods which carry this tag include Basmati rice, Darjeeling tea, Chanderi fabric, Mysore silk, Kullu shawl, Kangra tea, Thanjavur paintings, Allahabad surkha, Farrukhabad prints, Lucknow zardozi and Kashmir walnut wood carving.

Looks like BJP has Engineered another "Operation Lotus", this time in Maharastra.

But knowing the Shiv Sena, they'd also be willing to take the fight to the street. Interesting few days ahead

It's a play for Election Commission to recognize the Shinde faction as the real Shiv Sena.

Power is still with BJP - they just overturned the Aarey decision.

Also, bmc polls are coming where Thackeray has been in power for 30 years. Bmc budget is more than that of most states in India.

Maharashtra is complex. Pockets will always have Congress support. Vidarbha region will always have a slant toward Pawar (even though NCP is pound for pound the most corrupt party in India).
