Here's your 5-point peak into General Rawat's career:

  1. General Rawat has had an illustrious career in the defense services spanning over four decades that saw him rising in ranks to be appointed the first joint chief of the tri-services. The CDS is a one-point advisor to the government on matters related to the military and functions with the main aim of integrating the three services - the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force. He was appointed the 27th Chief of the Army Staff in 2016 amid a controversy over his seniority. He had superseded two senior officers to occupy the Army chief's position. He then rose to become the CDS in 2019. The government had amended the Army rules to extend the age of superannuation from 62 years to 65 years, paving the way for his appointment to the post.
  2. He is credited with being instrumental in reducing militancy in Northeast India. The 2015 cross-border operation into Myanmar in which the Indian Army successfully responded to an ambush by NSCN-K militants was conducted under his supervision. He was also part of the planning for the 2016 surgical strikes, in which the Indian Army went across the Line of Control into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and conducted an airstrike on a Jaish-e-Mohammad terror training camp in Pakistan's Balakot. General Rawat was reportedly monitoring the developments from South Block in New Delhi.
  3. General Rawat was a veteran in counterinsurgency and high-altitude warfare, having served in difficult terrains including the Northern and Eastern commands. He has also served as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-C) Southern Command. During his long career, he served across the country in various roles. He commanded a company in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir. As a Colonel, he commanded the 5th battalion 11 Gorkha Rifles in the Eastern sector along the Line of Actual Control at Kibithu in Arunachal Pradesh. As a Brigadier, he commanded 5 Sector of Rashtriya Rifles in Sopore, Kashmir. He has also been part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force and has commanded a multinational brigade in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he was twice awarded the Force Commander's Commendation.
  4. General Rawat has been decorated with many honours for his service, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, Yudh Seva Medal, and Sena Medal.
  5. General Rawat is an alumnus of the St Edward School in Shimla and the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. He was commissioned in the Fifth Battalion of the Eleven Gorkha Rifles in December 1978 from the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. He was a recipient of the prestigious "Sword of Honour". General Rawat also attended the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) course at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, USA.

Rest in Peace, Om Shanti to Gen. Bipin Rawat, his wife and all those onboard that lost their lives in this tragedy.

The nation is in mourning at this loss.

There is currently one survivor (Group Captain Varun Singh) who is fighting for his life. Let us hope he survives and makes best recovery possible.

Members are advised to post news and updates as they come here in this thread. I will pin it temporarily.

Please avoid posting any conspiracy theories, fake news and toxic tweets etc related to this matter. Thank you.

=================================================================================

Regd the General, this is an immensely saddening loss to armed forces and the nation.

As first CDS there was lot for him to establish, organise and execute in that capacity for armed forces to take forward in the future.

This is now a great setback on that, I hope rest of those involved in CDS process (including successor when announced) can pick up the mantle he has left behind....and may his distinguished career and leadership inspire them to honour his legacy in CDS, leadership and defence administration well.

@Philip the Arab et al, wonder how this will shape out:

The new grouping of India, Israel, the United States and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is expected to hold the first in-person meeting of foreign ministers in March 2022 to take forward an agenda focused on economic cooperation and infrastructure projects.

The foreign ministers of the group, described in some quarters as a West Asian Quad, are expected to hold their meeting on the margins of Expo 2020 in Dubai, people familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity. The four countries have begun working on specific projects that could be taken up at the meet.

The foreign ministers held their first virtual meeting on October 18 and decided to establish an international forum for economic cooperation.

They also discussed ways to expand economic and political cooperation in the Middle East and Asia, and to enhance maritime security.

External affairs minister S Jaishankar, who was visiting Israel at the time, joined the meeting with his Israeli counterpart Yair Lapid from Jerusalem. Jaishankar had said at the time that the four countries were looking to an “expeditious follow-up” to their first meeting.

The four countries have insisted that the new grouping, which does not yet have a formal name, does not have a military element and is not directed against any country. Israeli ambassador Naor Gilon recently said there is no military angle to the ongoing cooperation and the four nations were pursuing a constructive agenda focused on the economy, especially infrastructure projects.

The four countries have appointed senior officials to a joint working group that will come up with options for cooperation, the people cited above said.

The meeting held in October had built on the momentum created by the Abraham Accords of last year.

India has backed the Abraham Accords, through which Israel normalised relations with the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco. India, Israel and the UAE have also stepped up trilateral cooperation, especially in trade and investment, since the US brokered the accords.

It was inevitable that the new grouping would have a security overhang, said former ambassador Zikrur Rahman, who did several stints in West Asia. “Even when you discuss economic cooperation, shared security concerns are bound to come up,” he said.

These concerns include money laundering and criminal activities, Rahman pointed out. “There is bound to be intelligence-sharing and closer coordination on the security front as economic cooperation and security are closely linked, especially in a region like West Asia,” he said.

“The Abraham Accords have basically led to the opening up of the Gulf countries such as the UAE and Oman. A few countries, like Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, are proceeding more cautiously. They are not on the fast track as they will move after evaluating the pros and cons.

“At the same time, countries that have opened up are looking to Israel to adopt more flexible views on matters such as the Palestinian issue in the hope that this could lead to some sort of rapprochement,” Rahman said.
