TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — DPP Legislator Lin Chu-yin (林楚茵) on Tuesday urged Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) to support the Cabinet’s special budget bill for national defense drone purchases.
CNA reported that Lin said Han repeatedly called for Taiwan to develop drones during his recent visit to the US. She said Han should keep his promise after returning to the country and help the legislature pass the Cabinet’s special budget bill.
Lin said Taiwan needs to speed up the development of its own defense industry and asymmetric defense capabilities. She called on opposition parties not to delay defense plans for political reasons.
The KMT has proposed NT$240 billion (US$7.36 billion) in drone funding over six years, but wants the money included in the regular annual budget. The TPP said there should be no fixed cap on spending, but the budget should still be reviewed yearly.
Lin said putting about NT$40 billion in drone spending into the annual budget each year could take money away from social welfare, education, and local construction. She said annual reviews would also make long-term defense planning less stable.
Lin said this uncertainty could make drone companies worry about future demand and reduce their willingness to make long-term investments. She said stable funding is needed to help Taiwan build a stronger domestic drone industry.
The Cabinet’s plan would use a special budget of NT$210 billion for drone purchases. Lin said the plan follows earlier special defense budgets and would still be reviewed by the legislature and audited.
Lin said a special budget would give companies more certainty and help Taiwan build a China-free supply chain. She said this would also help the nation and the US become closer partners in the drone industry
