Air-Force Egypt moves ahead with purchase of Russian Su-35 fighters despite US warnings

The press release published on February 23, 2021 by the US Department of State is somewhat perplexing. According to the note, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry to emphasize the importance of the strong strategic partnership between the two nations in the ongoing cooperation against terrorism, as well as raise concerns about the potential procurement of Su-35 fighter aircraft from Russia.

What is surprising is the reference to a 'potential procurement' when Russia has already started deliveries of Sukhoi Su-35 Flanker jets to Egypt. Read more here

hmmm, interesting . In Indonesia case we opted for the F-15EX, there's even rumors that our Flanker fleet will be sold once the F-15EX comes online.

Interestingly, it is Indonesia which has caved in to US pressure and shelved any potential purchase of Russian fighter jets for the time being due to CAATSA sanctions imposed by the USA on Russia.

The Egyptian junta, brought to power in large part due to foreign assistance from the USA/its regional proxies in the KSA/UAE, however, is openly flouting US sanctions and dealing with Russia.

This is another instance, perhaps, where military might proves to be a great instrument of diplomatic power and the lack of military might turns out to be undesirable for achieving a country's geopolitical objectives.

Therefore, it might be tempting to believe economic power alone is not of any use in the modern era and perhaps, in the years to come if it is not backed by adequate military might.

so i think egypt has received some su35s already
