FATA merger to reduce Senate strength to 100

ISLAMABAD: After the merger of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in 2018, the number of seats in the Senate will be reduced to 100 once four members from the erstwhile tribal areas complete their six-year term on March 5 next year.

Hence, the election will not be held on the vacant seats because the senators elected from FATA in 2015 will not be replaced as a result of the merger and the fact that all the federating units have an equal share in the upper house.

Does this mean all the residents of the erstwhile FATA areas will get the right to vote in the next senate elections?

When they get the right to vote in senators, tell them to send that right our way as well since the people dont select the senators. They are selected by the provincial assembly of each assembly in accordance to single transferable vote. So basically the representatives will elect them so for people of FATA the KP assembly will elect them where they had elected their representatives

This opens up space for favoritism and such.

But it reminds me that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk founded the republic and the Assembly decided that the president would be elected by the Assembly and not people. As I recall this was decided upon because the people's literacy rate was very low, and ppl wouldn't know who or how to evaluate candidates.

Representative democracy and it makes the senate elections predictable unless you have a House of Cards type politician which there was in 2018 elections with PPP winning more seats than they deserved. Hoodwinked both PTI and PMLN but that is what Zardari is.

The question I have is more basic: Does this give actual universal suffrage in those areas, or just the sardars as before with widespread suppression?

They can vote to elect their leaders as they did in 2018 election general and then later on in the provincial since their seats were increased. 2018 was when they got the power to vote so yeah it did give them universal suffrage. Women also voted due to th3e 10% minimum women vote requirement for a constituency to be declared as done otherwise re-election.

After this if they vote in sardars then those are the chains that hold all of pakistan.

Khyber Pakhtunkwa does not really have a issue with sardars. The seniors figures might be titled Khans, Maliks etc but all men are equal. If you look at history of K-Pk elections parties that do not perform get kicked out.

Sardars, Waderas etc are more Baloch, South Punjab and Sindhi issue.
