Riquelme was a great player, I dont think he ever showed his real potential tough.

Back then football was fun, smaller teams still had a shot at winning something.

2010 Maradona was the coach. He took Ariel Garce to the world cup only because Maradona saw him in his dream lifting World Cup trophy, hahaha . In the match vs Germany Macherano was alone in the midfield vs 4 Germans?! Sabella 2014 wasn't too bad , Argentina was better then Germany in that match . Di Maria was injured (truly great player) , mistake he did was replacing Lavezzi. Argentine coaches aren't bad , it is just that they're strange people like Argentina in general. As one guy said " People who like football, like Brazil, people who love football love Argentine " . Very characterful people, Passarela ( genial player) doesn't call Redondo and Batistuta due to long hair . No coaches ever played Batistuta and Crespo together, they said too similar. Bielsa and all his madness. Etc Only Bilardo was pragmatic and cynical but even he was a bit crazy. Argentine led by Messi and Di Maria and Portugal led by Ronaldo are the only reason why I will watch Qatar. After that good bye Messi, Ronaldo and Di Maria and for me football. After 45 years of watching there is nothing for me to see anymore
Yes , you spotted it right, the selection of right players was always the worst problem of Argentina. Coaches were good mostly but they have always had their strange ideas . Scalini instead Zanetti? Are you kidding me ? Replacing one of all time great players with a journeyman? Hahaha, morons. Burdisso instead of Samuel? Some village boy instead Norberto Alonso or Bochini and I forgot Caniggia wasn't called because a long hair

45 years of watching football?
What an experience you have.
Salute...

He only got 1 chance in world cup.
& He was not disappointed.
End up as top assister.
Argentina wasted him
in 2002, 2010 & 2014.

I completely agree, he was wasted. Also in Barca , Van Gaal put him on the right wing?! Such slow player on wing, shame. Actually the first game that watched and remember well was Spain vs Yugoslavia 1973 play off match for Mundial 1-0 for Yugoslavia , a guy from Sarajevo scored. The first match on stadium I vaguely remember Red Star vs Sarajevo 1972 in Belgrade, I think Sarajevo won🤩 I was 4 at the time. So you can say I followed game for 50 years so as my birthday will be InshaAllah in October on 50th anniversary I will close the book in Qatar. Surely you can say that Riquelme was on of top 5 talent wise players in that time and one of 5 my favourites.
Maradona, Zidan, Passarela, Hierro, Kohler,Falcao, Rummenige, Louis Fernández ( France) , Mataus etc. Those were the days.
Greece winning Euro 2004 was the first sign that talent is not prominent anymore likewise improvisation, elan etc. Italy won the last Euro without any talent whatsoever. When you see some good move it is obvious that they worked on that for a long time and just in order to impress and make a mark. For that reason I never considered Ronaldinho truly great player, he was circus performer and game is the game not a circus. Marcelo is the same, the exhibitionist , I never understood his role, I particularly don't like him, a joker.Ah yes I forgot Zanetti.

The style of play of Argentina for my taste was most remarkable. It was 2 touches and pass always forward or dribbling and pass forward. They didn't put many bodies in transition on the back and in defending they relyed on one on one duels. That's by far most difficult and purest form of football. If that idiot Pekerman called Zanetti and Samuel, Argentina would have walked that tournament. What a shame

He was a gifted playmaker.....but he needed the whole team set up for him to have his way.....I think the way pellegrini set up his Villarreal team centered arouond him was bascially the only way for him to flourish. Which obviously couldn't happen in Barcelona. Basically the type of player who is great at his stuff(for him bascially making passes when given the space and time with the ball) but not good at any other stuff. He needed other players covering for him...doing all the running and creating spaces. Similar to Ozil, i think.

He was a versatile attacking playmaker,
but not a versatile footballer as a whole
(did not involved in defensive).

A good coach knows
how to use the available advantages.

A coach who did not fully utilized Riquelme
at best
is a failed coach.

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim.
Assalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh to Muslim.
Good day to Others.

Roman (AM/CM) Best Tournament:

8) 1999 Copa America:
4 matches
0 goal
3 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 0.75

7) 2005 Confederations Cup:
5 matches
3 goals
1 assist
Goal + Assist Ratio = 0.80

6) 2006 World Cup:
5 matches
0 goal
4 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 0.80

5) 2008 Copa Libertadores:
10 matches
4 goals
5 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 0.90

4) 2009 Copa Libertadores:
7 matches
4 goals
4 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 1.14

3) 1997 World Youth Cup:
7 matches
4 goals
6 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 1.43

2) 2007 Copa America:

5 goals
3 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 1.60

1) 2007 Copa Libertadores:
11 matches
8 goals
5 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 1.18

Why this ranked no.1
despite no.2 & 3 have higher Goal + Assist Ratio?

Cause it's hard to ignore
his world class goals here:

1) Direct corner kick goal
(Round of 16)(2nd leg)(away),

2) At edge of penalty box goal
(Final)(2nd leg)(away),

3) Solo goal
(Quarterfinal)(2nd leg)(away)

4) Free kick goal
(Final)(1st leg)(home),

5) Free kick goal
(Semifinal)(2nd leg)(home),

6) One touch goal
(Round of 16)(1st leg)(home)

Good day to Others.

I watch football for entertainment.

Among the entertainment was
Riquelme leading a small Villarreal team,
defeating Barcelona
with Ronaldinho, Xavi, Iniesta & Deco,
3-0!!!

What is Riquelme's contribution here?

1) a back heel assist;
2) a free kick assist;
3) successfully control the tempo of the match
despite faced a group of world class midfielders;
4) successfully dribbled many Barca players.

At other forum,
some said,
"he never been the conductor of a
great European team."
I don't care about it. 😄

Riquelme only need a functional team
to destroy them.

Riquelme was a great player but when he hit his peak in 2006 the offensive playmaker role started to be phased out.

A Bosnian player Zvjezdan Misimovic had similar qualities to riquelme. His only problem was that he was overweight. Only got to play in 2014 World Cup for Bosnia when he was past his prime - both technically & physically.

Di Stefano? When I was a kid he was considered 2nd greatest player in history after Pele by the majority of people. Argentina truly has had great players it is difficult to rank them

Possibly related to Argentine players
who have contributed greatly
to Argentine football.

Di Stefano's big contribution,
mostly at Real Madrid.

Riquelme peak should be the 2007.
Gave almost an 1 man army performance
in 2 different tournaments.
2007 Libertadores.
2007 Copa America.

Even his 2006 World Cup performance,
I ranked it as no.6
in his best tournament rank.
