Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Mass on Monday opposed Greece’s demand to impose an arms embargo on Turkey amid the ongoing Eastern Mediterranean tensions.

Speaking to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa), Maas said: “I do not find the demand of an arms embargo against Turkey strategically correct. It is not easy to do this against a NATO partner. We saw that NATO ally Turkey easily bought missiles from Russia because it could not buy from the U.S.”

The German minister also expressed his hope that the disputes in the Eastern Mediterranean will be resolved through diplomatic channels.

Basically saying the only reason we don't sanction Turkey is because doing so will force them into buying Russian arms, meaning Turkey will co-operate more with Russia and come under Russian influence more.

It also means that if there was no Russian threat to europe, they would screw Turkey.

The cost of Turkey going self-reliant is a threat that Europe is starting to understand. I'm all for Arms Embargos., do it.

They won't. Germany thinks rationally and is not led by its emotions like France is. Nor is Merkel in need of bashing on Turkey for approval, the same can't be said for a politician with an approval rating of ~20%.
While France boasts about a nonexistent EU Military might the germans are very aware that without the US Russia would fall over them before they could say European Union, said as such by their own MoD. Germany is also aware that the southern flank of Europe can't be defended by countries of the likes of Greece.

Germany is also very aware, as are eastern european countries, that France just wants to create its own NATO in which it can command around other european countries to do its dirty buisness for them while it hides behind their soldiers.

Even if Germany has problems with Turkey it also is aware of its importance. In 10-20 Years Turkey will still be a regional power while Greece will still not have paid one cent of its 300+ billion euro debt towards germany. So who do you think Germany would rather have relations on good terms with?

A self-sustaining and self-reliant Turkey is a future that can't be averted anymore and the germans and hungarians were probably the first one to realize this. They rather have a self-reliant and self-sustaining Turkey that they can have relations with than have one that is hostile to them and the EU.

Not to mention that Greece still threaten Germany with repair payments up $ 380 billions!
