While I'm all for a better Hürjet and agree with all of you, just thinking out loud:

The benchmark F-16 is not a state-of-the-art design anymore. It was designed in 1970s, and depending on the mission profile, it could be surpassed by newer designs like Lavi or other canard designs with less brute-strength. Current F-16 is very capable, but due to additional equipment it's not a lean machine anymore.

Hürjet is a double-seat trainer aircraft, due to conventional design it will not be efficient aerodynamically and its battlefield survivability will not be good because it lacks stealth design.

Helmet mounted cueing, all aspect missiles, precision guided small bombs will make instantenous sustained turn rates and heavy loads less important.

If there was no time-pressure, leaving Hürjet as it is with a cheaper & small engine and developing it could be better now. In parallel, a different and more efficient airframe could be developed. However there is TFX/MMU now, so all resources for a new fighter should go into MMU. Again however, due to advanced needs of MMU we could have used an interim design between MMU and Hürjet, to accumulate more experience. There is no resource or time for that now. This lack of experience makes MMU programme too risky, but we must succeed.

Turkey should have developed a F-16 variant like F-16XL or F-2 of Japan in the 1990s.

Without Russian engines we couldnt accomplish the topic. Yea just buy a jet engine and fix in it. Too easy. High specialists

A single engine full size fighter is a common sense option for Turkey. We should go for that as a separate project from the Hürjet. But this plane should be made with a Turkish engine, so it can wait for after twin engine MMU is complete. The Hürjet project has already advanced to materialization so it can proceed in its current design. Hürjet will have its own market for states that don't need a better plane.

As the publisher said “as a last resort” case Russian or Chinese engines can be thought of. This is if The US will not sell the f404/414 engines. Then as the Turkish saying goes to get us out of water we will hold on to the serpent’s tail.
Let us be realistic. TR Motor is not an engine producer. But a so called design bureau. Even if they managed to draw up a design that is feasible it is going to take years for either TEI or Kale to produce a viable engine. Then there is it’s integration and classification time before a serial production can commence. This will take us well in to the mid 30’s. Besides we don’t even know if they are working on an indigenous engine for Hurjet. Of course same line of thought is valid for the TFX too.
We have no other choice but to go ahead with a company like RR for the TFX and Hurjet engines until we have perfected our own engine.
US may provide us with the f404 for the trainer version. But I doubt they will be very willing to supply the f414 for the CAS and light attack version of Hurjet.

"HURJET's body will be visible this year with the engine installed." It is aimed that HURJET will make its first flight in 2022 and enter the inventory in 2025. The hourly flight cost of HURJET will be from four to one of the F-16's.

Interesting to see that the Hurjet is going to be 4x as cheaper to fly than the F-16. It'll be great for rapid cross-border, low-risk strike missions for which the F-16's are currently used.

Yes among other things, it can also do ambush and bait cover to help F-16s and TF-X (with larger missile payload) sitting behind like wolfpack.

During 1990s up to about 2010 (and even beyond) this was designated role of F-5 for Singapore AirForce (I have this on good authority a few times)....and why they invested+upgraded in keeping them going in squadrons (even when they acquired and deployed large number of F-16)

They (F-5) fit quite nice in that doctrine (along with quick CAP etc) while the F-16s were to "hang back" more in the air.

TurAF will figure out and implement all the optimum (A2A and A2G) doctrines once the deliveries begin.

Four to five times cheaper to be exact.

To be honest I am much more excited about Hürjet than MMU. Considering a development process of a advanced fighter jets I am expecting at least couple of delays for the MMU project and Hürjet will give us the breathing room we desperately need.(since there is not many real options to suplement the F16 fleet) It will both take the load from the F16's from regular operations(and extend the F16's usable years) and if the need occurs give us the oppurtunity to use more F16's for air to air role. Obvioulsy Hürjet won't be able conduct deep strike operations but it is something. Also we will have the oppurtunity to test a lot of systems that will be used MMU later on.

At first I didn't have many hopes for the Hürjet because the mockup revealed out of the blue but the project developed so well that now I am very excited about it. I really like to congratulate the TUSAS for taking an incentive to develop this aircraft. I think Hürjet will have a key role for our airforce and MMU development.(and made me really belive that we can make the MMU)

That last sentence is very important. To be able to fly sorties against terrorists in the east and in northern Syria and Iraq at quarter of the cost of f16’s is great news. With the Aksungur and Akinci drones being able to carry opportunist weapons heavy enough to be in f16’s domain, to hit positions in the ground , the F16’s of TuAF, will be able take a breather.
Also, it will allow our pilots to train more often. The importance of this can't be overstated.

I think TFX must be delayed about 2-3 years so that focus should be put on Hurjet first. Experience and test flight carried out by Hurjet program then can be used to better design and manufacture TFX. 2-3 years delay will also be good for TFX indigenous engine development, it will make them get some breath amid tight TFX schedule.

We can do both and in time.

Turkey has so far excelled in armoured vehicles, UAVs, munition, naval platforms, small arms, E/O devices, and EW equipment.
The first flight of Hürjet will mark a new era in our defence capabilities.

I'm just wondering why hasn't anyone ask about the Hürkus and why did we only order 15, and why did it take so long, and why did we order so any Super Mushshaks?

I think fate of MIUS is heavily related to Hurjet. Since Baykar has no experience on developing Jet engine powered aircraft, they will use tai's experience that gained from hurjet. I think we won't see any MIUS before hurjet.

They are thinking more into the direction of that lightly armed hurjet. Either they will develop something new similar to hurjet or they will transform their new jet trainer into a similar platform.

Hard work and endless efforts with a great deal of team work finally paid off, resulting over 1700 pages of a critical design report. I feel like as if we have achieved to write a book called "introduction to trainer jet aircraft design&built 101". I am very proud to be a member of this magnificant team. Well done to all who is involved.
