I was pleasantly surprised to see just how remembered Florence Nightingale still is in Turkey. A number of hospitals etc are named after her.

The earliest contacts with Russian empire were not good either. There was a number of chukchi and yupik wars with Russian settlers, traders and forces sent there....it didnt go well for Russians (even with numbers on their side) for many years till they sent in much more numbers and turned brutal (i.e things like raids on settlements specifically to take away women and children by force and keep them in concentration camps effectively).

Soviets just continue the policy and took it to new level.

As bad as resident school program was in Canada (and new abuses are uncovered with time...and deep apology given multiple times by Canada govt in recent times and reparations/welfare augmented)....things never got anywhere close to brutal methods used by Russians/Soviets in far east Siberia.

Inuit/Yupik/Aleut fishermen in Alaska, their expression can go quite glum when you ask about contacts they had with their kinsmen across the Bering strait (they after all did see each other from time to time out in the water and establish communication etc even in height of cold war). It is essentially a subject they do not like to talk about, the repression faced there by their people.

I have been ploughing through two gorgeous series on Turkish history, and am totally engaged in the goings on. Learnt more about the Ottomans than ever before.

It has been a very informative series for me thus far, good to watch to get some interesting details on Turkey's history (especially for the non-Turk).

Would appreciate to hear any comments/discussion/debate on stuff he has presented here if anyone is interested in watching it or has watched it already etc. It might take while to watch it all though if you haven't....but I found it quite well done overall.

Just watched the three part series, i must say its probably the most accurate explanation of Turkey and Turks from beginning to end, there might be some missing things but all in all it was quite accurate.

Ghazi Hasan Pasha of Algiers (1714-1790)
Also known as the 'Pasha with the Lion'.

He,
*Captured a Spanish warship when he was just a young janissary.
He owned that Spanish ship and so, his legendary story began.
*Captured and sunk many US warships in the Mediterranean.
*IMPOSED A TAX on the US. (The Ottomans were the first and the only Empire which imposed a tax on the US after their Independence.)
*His actions caused the foundation of the treaty of Tripoli (in Turkish language) with the US which is also the first and the only treaty written in a foreign language in the US history .
The US paid 642.000 Ottoman golds for once and 12.000 golds per year.
*Domesticated a Lion in Algiers and used to board the enemy ships with his Lion.
*Built a new and modern Ottoman fleet within 3 years with his own money.
*Became a grand vizier just before he passed away.
*Laid the foundations of today's naval academies in Turkey.
*Had many mosques and schools built.
*Passed away leaving no children and a family behind...

Another interesting fact connected to Ottoman Algeria and the Imperial Navy.
In the end of the 17th century there was a constant struggle between the French and the Ottomans in the Western Mediterranean. One of the great figures of the Ottoman fleet at that time is Mezzo Morto Huseyin Pasha. Mezzo Morto means “Half dead” in Italian. He won that nickname after a big battle against the Spanish when he was gravely injured. Historians still argue about his ancestry but he was either a Turk or a Christian convert from Mallorca. The biggest titles he achieved are that of a Beylerbey of Algeria and Grand Admiral of the Ottoman Navy. In different parts of his life he was also a lord of Rhodes and the Islands of the Empire. He lead many fights all around the seas from the French Coasts to the Aegean, the Black sea and the Danube.

After many French attacks on the Algerian coasts in 1683 he gave an order the French Consul Jean la Vacher to be loaded into a cannon and shot towards the French coasts... a picture of the incident is shown below.

An excellent series on Mexico's history (Esp w.r.t its northern neighbour).

If you don't have time to watch it all (though I highly recommend that you do), I would suggest watching at least the last chapter (chapter X of part 3, i.e 1:21:00 onwards, about 40 minutes long) to get a solid analysis behind the current political narratives.

Also the Lion he kept as a pet was a Barbary Lion. Barbary Lion was native to North Africa.
