The A20 is a Tier IV British heavy tank. An early predecessor to the A22 Churchill, it features a similarly fast-firing gun, relatively strong frontal armor, and long side armor suitable for sidescraping.

A tank's tires wear out quickly when driving at high speeds in hot weather. Trials to find the most resilient tire for the T-34 tank began #OTD in 1942. Tires made from 120s rubber without cooling holes lasted for over 2000 km of travel with no damage. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The VK 30.02 (M) was officially chosen as the chassis for a new tank destroyer confusingly called schweren Panzerjäger (Pz.Sfl.IVd) (8.8 cm L/71) #OTD in 1942. This vehicle is better known as the Jagdpanther. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

OTD in 1942 the KV-1S prototype completed mobility trials on pavement and moved off-road. The tank already showed a considerably higher speed and reliability than the overweight KV-1. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

A change was introduced into the design of the T-70 light tank #OTD in 1942. The exhaust pipes were moved from the side of the tank to the top of the engine deck. Heat shielding was later introduced to prevent tank riders from burning themselves on it. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The design of the Grille 17/21 SPG was finished #OTD in 1944. Work on assembling a prototype of this 60 ton vehicle armed with either a 17 cm Kanone 18 or 21 cm Mrs 18 began later that year, but never completed. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The 12.7 ton Light Tank T7 nearly doubled in weight during its development. #OTD in 1942 the tank, now weighing 24.5 tons, was accepted into service as the Medium Tank M7. As a medium, the tank had no advantage over the Sherman, and was later cancelled. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The PT-76 amphibious tank was accepted into service #OTD in 1952. This tank was in a whole different league than pre-war amphibious reconnaissance tanks and enjoyed a long career as a result, remaining in service to this day in some parts of the world. #tanks #history #ColdWar

Czechoslovakia was an active player on the international arms market before German occupation. #OTD in 1935 a contract was signed with Romania to supply 35 AH-IV-R tankettes. Romania later purchased a license to produce these tankettes themselves. #tanks #history.

When I first posted images of the Boxer family in 2020, most additional variants were still prototypes. Today, there's no stopping the Boxer juggernaut. 12 different variants are in production with 5 (soon to be 6) variants made in the UK. A further 8 Boxer types are in development. The vehicle's modular concept hits hard: an expeditionary combat vehicle that combines tactical and operational mobility with best-in-class protection, payload, and mission flexibility. #GoFastGoHardGoHome

The T-72 tank was accepted into service #OTD in 1973. This was a "budget" variant of the MBT concept pioneered by the T-64A tank, which remained in production. By the time the USSR collapsed, three competing MBT designs were being made in parallel. #tanks #history #ColdWar

OTD in 1942 the KV-1S prototype completed a 300 km trial run on dirt roads giving an average speed of 20 kph. This was better mobility than the KV-1 could achieve in similar conditions and a signal that the redesign was a success. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII.

During World War II, Turkey maintained a strict policy of neutrality until early 1945. Because of this neutral stance, its unique and diverse collection of armored vehicles never saw combat against foreign powers. Turkey famously operated an eclectic mix of military hardware sourced from the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, Nazi Germany, and the United States. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Early Soviet Imports (1930s)
Before the outbreak of the war, Turkey purchased equipment from the Soviet Union to build its first core armored units: [1, 2]
    • T-26 (Model 1933): The backbone of early Turkish armor, with around 60 to 64 light tanks acquired alongside a couple of T-26As.
    • T-27 & T-37A: Small numbers of tankettes and amphibious light tanks.
    • BA-3 / BA-6: Soviet armored cars used alongside the T-26 regiments. [1, 2, 3]

Axis and Allied Additions (1943–1945)
As the war progressed, both the Axis and the Western Allies gifted or sold hardware to Turkey in separate diplomatic attempts to sway Ankara to join their respective sides: [1, 2]
    • From Germany: Received mid-war German armor including Panzer III (Ausf. M/H/J variants) and Panzer IV (Ausf. G) tanks in 1943.
    • From the British / Allies: Received substantial Lend-Lease shipments including roughly 180 to 200 Valentine infantry tanks, light tanks like the Renault FT and Hotchkiss H-35/R-35, and M3 Stuart light tanks.
    • From the United States: Received batches of M4 Sherman medium tanks toward the very end of the conflict in early 1945. [1, 2, 3, 4]

A T-34 tank with a dedicated commander and a commander's cupola entered trials #OTD in 1942. Trials showed that there was just not enough space for a third crewman, cupola or not. A commander was only added once the turret was radically enlarged. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII
