Israeli-made Iron Dome Radar Now Operational in Hungarian Air Space

The new Israeli ELM-2084 mobile S-Band radar has apparently been installed at the radar squadron of the Hungarian Defense Forces Air Operation Command and Control Center, as the hilly woodland panorama of the settlement of Kup (western Hungary) is broken by the image of the new equipment, reported lhsn.hu on its Facebook page.

As Magyar Nemzet reports, the contract for the procurement of the ELM-2084 radars under the development program was signed in December 2020. The equipment incorporates the Israeli company IAI ELTA’s “active phase-guided” (AESA) radar technology, and will replace the old Soviet P-37, PRV-17, and SZT-68U radars of the Hungarian Defense Forces

The ELM-2084 ordered by Hungary is a so-called multi-mission mobile radar system. According to a description published by the manufacturer, the radar uses state-of-the-art technology to provide a three-dimensional, real-time aerial situational picture even in complex conditions. The radar is capable of continuous airborne reconnaissance with 360-degree, all-around coverage and a maximum reconnaissance range of 470 kilometers, processing data from up to 1,100 airborne targets simultaneously. With its existing and if required, additional integrable data link systems, it can control interceptors of various missile defense and air defense systems.

NASAMS Air Defense System to Protect Budapest Skies

The air defense around Budapest will receive a significant high-tech boost: according to Combatant.blog.hu, units of the medium-range NASAMS air defense systems will be deployed to protect the capital.

The announcement was made in a video published by the Pápai Media Center on June 12, in which Colonel Tibor Matyi Mihály, commander of the Hungarian Armed Forces’ 205th Air Defense Missile Regiment, said that some of the NASAMS (National Advance Surface-to-Air Missile System) equipment currently stationed in Győr (northwestern Hungary) will be deployed to Budapest. The army is waiting for recruits not only in the city of Győr, but also in the capital.

During the recruitment campaign on the iranyasereg.hu website, Budapest was listed alongside the vicinity of the Győr garrison as a place of service where the recruits could receive barracks accommodation. This is a significant development as there has been no ground-based air defense unit in the capital since the late 1990s, when the former regiments were disbanded.

The first NASAMS systems arrived in Hungary in 2023, and according to available data, seven batteries were purchased. Each battery consists of several launchers, which thanks to the system’s network-based operation, can be deployed at significant distances from each other.

The ongoing wars in Ukraine or the Middle East have once again highlighted the key importance of protecting large cities. NASAMS has already proven its effectiveness in Ukraine, thus it is a logical step for Budapest as well to benefit from the protection offered by the system.

Hungarian "Iron Dome” deployed near the Ukrainian border

Hungarian 'Iron Dome’ has been deployed near the Ukrainian border because even experts believe the war may reach Hungarian territories. The ministry did not share exactly where they placed the air defence system.

Hungary is preparing for the worst-case scenario. The Hungarian Defence Ministry did not want to comment or provide further details, but Blikk believes that the defence minister decided to deploy Hungary’s NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System) air defence system in Northeast Hungary. Szalay-Bobrovniczky said that the advanced air defence systems allow Hungarian troops to increase their efficiency concerning detection accuracy and shorten reaction times.
