Honda (7267.T) said last week it will make India a production and export base for one of its planned electric cars.
India's low costs and vast labour pool have long been an attraction for manufacturers.

Now, Japanese automakers are stepping up operations as they pivot away from China, both as a market and a manufacturing base, multiple industry executives said. Another benefit: India remains all but closed to Chinese EVs, so Japan's carmakers - at least for now - won't face bruising competition from BYD (002594.SZ) and others there.

A brutal price war among Chinese EV makers has made it difficult to turn a profit in China. Adding to the pain, Chinese carmakers are now expanding overseas and snatching market share from Japanese rivals in Southeast Asia.

Apparently, Norton's new 1200cc V4 engines are being made by TVS in India:

Makes sense... I remember reading (probably in Autocar India) about somebody saying they saw large 4-cylinder mills being built during a TVS factory tour. Good on TVS for making proper superbike engines! The experience of working on them will be invaluable if they want to go international & compete with likes of CFMoto. The acquisition of Norton might may rich dividends.

Meanwhile, it seems Stellantis will be sourcing a platform from India's Tata Motors on which to build a new Jeep SUV:

“Tata Motors has been a Stellantis partner for more than 20 years and will provide a highly competitive platform to develop a new Jeep car that will be developed in India, assembled in India, in our Stellantis-Tata JV in India for the world. The upcoming Jeep model is expected to become one of five globally oriented products Stellantis is developing in Asia using local partnerships and lower-cost engineering ecosystems,” said Gregoire Olivier, the head of the Asia Pacific region at Stellantis.

While Stellantis did not reveal which architecture would be used, we expect it to be the ARGOS platform that underpins the Tata Sierra. Technically, it suits the Jeep brand because it allows for all-wheel drive (AWD) – which is crucial for Jeep – and electrification, making it future-proof. Previously, Jeep announced a new SUV due in 2027 as part of its 2.0 Strategy for India.
