The attitude of govt. is different then previous govts and they tried to provide best staff to the most probables , sorry the population is 25 million and I have corrected my post .

They have started sports university in Manipur , hopefully other states will also get some facilities

Respect from the south...

BTW, there was also Pakistani javelin thrower I was keeping an eye on (Arshad Nadeem).

Guy has bigger frame than Neeraj, and there would be more like him waiting to be nurtured and developed to get to the apex realm. Then its matter of consistency and luck. He would have medalled if he got closer to his personal best.

He is big hearted guy, and Neeraj is hero to him:

Maybe @Waz @Saiyan0321 @Kaptaan et al. can tell us a bit more about him and what their general thoughts on PK sports these days.

Waz is one I particularly would appreciate going through this thread and giving us some points to muse on if he would like ....as I remember having friendly chat with Waz about our wrestlers (on both sides of border) back in 2018 CWG I believe...iirc there was good sportsmanship+friendship between Muhammad Inam and Somveer Kadian at the medal ceremony.

It seems to me that Pakistan is stuck even more in the problems that India faced (and faces still though there is slow improvement now), with too much focus on monolith (Cricket) + usual corruption every endeavour attracts in south asia...and this severely detracts ability to grow other sports vertically at the apex process and intensity needed.

I can bet if Anju Bobby George got even half of facilities which Neeraj got she would have easily got a medal in long jump

Bro that was the earlier era I speak of for sure....80s, 90s up to 2000s.

I remember reading india today article back in the 90s about Dhanraj Pillay (since we haven't mentioned a Tamil yet here).... and that era of Indian hockey....he stood out when all else looked near entirely lost cause (we were regularly losing to even malaysia)....and he kept the baton for this new generation and spirit we got now.

So big credit to folks like him....and Anju and the tennis folks etc. They showed what could be done during the lowest point (i.e when biggest gap exists between promise/potential and reality).

But for each one like that (that we know names of that kept the fire burning), there was also plenty of sad stories too in that era....people that never made it to the window of years their talent earned them even back then for whatever reason.

India today did follow up article on another hockey guy (to contrast with Dhanraj)....I forgot his name, but he had raw unbridled spirit and oodles of talent in 90s...but I think he suffered injury and corruption at selectors for Indian hockey team did the rest, his career was finished. India today tracked him down, he was working for Indian railways as ticket collector etc. They had picture of him with hockey stick in his IR uniform...I still remember it clearly.

There was just too many stories like that, his was just one example.

It is very slow arduous process just like realisation of potential with everything else regarding India.

The other guy was Dillep Tirkey or Ignes Tirkey and If i rememebr correctly they put a picture of his scooter in that article . Naveen Patnaik did alot for Hockey . Tamil Nadu has its own talents , you guys are busy in winning science nobles and running organizations like ISRO , BARC and DRDO .

But it really hurts when we remeber the gems of sports like PT Usha , Anju Bobby George , Dhanraj Pillay , how they got betrayed by politicians .

Haryan did good because we have one CM who focussed on sports and promoted the sportsman , His name is Bhupender Singh Hooda and now BJP CM is taking his good work forward .

I really want to mention the name of Kiren Rijuju Sir for doing a lot for Indian sports .

Kiren Rijuju for becoming a hands on Sports minister

1628382502073.png

Naveen Patnaik for sponsring Hockey .

1628382326522.png

Bhupender Singh Hooda for promoting Sports in Haryana

1628382378083.png

Current Haryana CM for taking his good work forward

1628382423944.png

Manipur CM N Biren Singh used to play football from BSF club

It wasn't Tirkey. It was another fella, less well known....Marathi iirc. Think literally just had couple years at most on the team. I forgot his name....might try look for it later.

It's real simple, sports ecosystem cannot succeed without statist intervention. No one else will pick up the initial and middle mantle....goes for entire world in general. @Deliorman @Sinan have been watching this from their end w.r.t Turkey and taking note too on that.

Only the big-crowd "sustained" sports then make leagues and corporate sponsorship to sustain more organically (Cricket for India a long time and now progressing to wrestling, badminton etc).

So this is sea change we are seeing in India's case over last decade or so and now coursing to next tier (rivers merging even).....but it maybe is still 30% intensity/focus (from state side) applied at 10% scope still.....but it beats earlier situation (say 10% at 5% scope) by wide margin....lets hope it continues to grow as fast and as furious as possible....we need things to look in 50%+ for both to break into top 20 and top 10 rank of medal table in olympics for example.

These are all things (state side support) that other countries (esp at our population level) took for granted far longer be it CCP monolith dedicated focus (after cultural revolution ended and interaction with world recommenced) or US collegiate level network on all kind of disciplines that extend for a century or more now.

The longer you are at it, the more experience you develop in the sports bureaucracy even (and the pressures + checks and balances and merit-cleansing involved to keep any inevitable goons there contained and in check..and even exposed).

Its muscle/mind memory...stuff you dont need to think about and worry about, you just know them intrinsically.

It is very much like the application of sport (or any discipline) itself....the more you train, the more you experience, the more you can do naturally without thinking.....and the mind can then deploy to higher tier stuff. This is what separates B-tier from A tier and A+ tier etc....you can input the same raw guy/gal into each of these but come out with different results depending on the process they have to cultivate all of this efficiently.

Dhanraj Pillay

He is hardwired to what is happening now like no one else hehe:

“I think we should start preparing for the World Cup and next Olympic straightaway. We must have a wider core group of players and prepare them for the next mission,” he said.

Honestly I hope Hockey India does at least one of two things (preferably both):

A) Funded lot more to create much better domestic league tier to attract foreign players+coaching
B) Ability to join european teams at playing there in their setup (ensconced especially in the Rhine valley+delta i.e Netherlands, Belgium and Germany)

We are not going to get better fast enough with current roster of exposure (to mostly fellow asian teams and then a few international tourneys).

We need to study closely and deploy as much as possible what NED + BEL + GER have done over last 15 years.....simply having aussie coach etc is not going to be enough....there needs to be much larger apparatus intersection with these 3 countries in Europe....they are current creme de la creme (along with Aussies) for reason.

These 3 play regularly with each other a whole lot at great frequency and interaction, thats what has really helped them get to the highest tier quality and consistency.

Then and only then we will have chance of getting an A++ tier drag flicker like hendrickx for example....a total unit you can rely on close to 100% consistency instead of leaving a cpl missed opportunities that could have been difference between winning and losing in end (at this level).

Tamil Nadu has its own talents , you guys are busy in winning science nobles and running organizations like ISRO , BARC and DRDO .

Among other things heh. I doubt I would be playing chess as pastime, if it weren't for Vishy Anand.

Or working on my forehand and backhand when I get time....thinking of that immortal clash and (missed) opportunity Amritraj had with Bjorn Borg.

If kabbadi can really get international presence (esp olympics), we can do a lot there too.

For other stuff its not like we are very different to keralites and telugus....we broadly intersect with them...especially given Madras/Chennai legacy.

Gopichand started TN side of his academy in Salem, TN some years back....it will take time to grow and sustain a good crop....like original HYD one is now doing.

The squash legacy with keralites in Chennai goes back a ways too. Pallikal is just one recent fruit of it.

In fact I don't get why Squash didnt enter olympics yet again. There's all kinds of other sports that are way less in athletic ability included each time, its silly.

Congrats., to India. Situation from what I can adduce is terrible. First there is monopoly of cricket which appears to have stunted everything. Then there appears to be almost zero investment in sport. I let others with more on ground feel to give insight but I find sport in Pakistan in a state of cardiac arrest.

I love football and have collection of Argentina, Germany, Sweden, England kits. Last week I almost bought the Turkish kit. The crescent and star reminded me of Pakistan. How lovely it would be to see green green crescent star to walk into world cup game at Wembley with 'Dil Dil Pakistan'.

More chance of Afghanistan getting there then Pakistan. Alas ...

We don't blame Americans celebrating their victory, we just screwed the whole thing up at the last moment by ourselves. What a letdown.

This Nadeem guy is good , its always sooths to see kids from humble background reaches the international stage .
Best of luck to him for future

Just one point , the overseas Pakistanis show so much nationalism in these forums and ready to nuke India and show India its ugly face on the other hand you guys can easily sponsor 1-2 such Nadeem type talented kids and provide them basic facilities dont mind its just a suggestion

Sad that his success will be overshadowed by Cricket.

Honestly feel sorry for Indian athletes.

In Turkey the same problem its always football, football and fcking football again. Dont get me wrong I love both sports just dont like how a nation just focuses on one sport while ignoring the rest.

Never use internet as pulse of what goes on real life. It gives you a distorted picture. I can say with almost 99% certitude that Pakistani people have one of the weakest nationalisms in the world. The emphasis on religion has just created a vague notion of Muslim identity. If Nadeem could have rendered his quest as Muslim versus Kaffirs he might have got flood of support and money.

Man the state he belongs to celebrates wrestlers more then cricketers and Neeraj will be an example which every parent in rural Haryan will give to motivate the children .

I just want to add one more thing this is first time when Indian govt interacted with players directly be it Prime Minister or Sports ministers

We won first wrestling individual medal in 2008 ( in recent past) and after that we are getting medals in wrestling since 2008 Olympics .

Cricket is popular in urban centres while wrestling dominates rural arena

I dont get what sports has to do with relegion , relegion is personal thing .
Nadeem is promising lad , he can do wonders with proper training and what diff his relegion will make if he is muslim or non muslim .
