Indonesian air force orders Pilatus PC-24 transports and signs LOI for PC-21 trainers​

Pilatus has secured its biggest military contract to date for the PC-24 light jet, with the Indonesian air force to take a dozen examples, while Jakarta also has expressed interest in acquiring its PC-21 turboprop trainer.

Announcing the developments on 30 March, the Swiss airframer states: “A contract for 12 PC-24s has been signed with PT E-System Solutions Indonesia, the authorised defence contractor by the Ministry of Defence.”

“At the same time, a letter of intent has been signed among the parties for the supply of 24 PC-21 trainers,” the company reveals.

The twinjet type will be employed for duties including “transport pilot training, air transport and liaison missions”, it says. The airframer says it also will “ensure maximum fleet availability and efficient maintenance” via an integrated support programme arrangement.

Korea-Indonesia “Cooperation on Mass Production of KF-21 Fighter Jets”

During a summit with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who is on a state visit to Korea, President Lee Jae-myung agreed to cooperate on the mass production of the IF-21, the Indonesian variant of the Korean supersonic fighter jet KF-21. The two countries have decided to elevate their relationship to that of “Special Comprehensive Strategic Partners.”

During the Korea-Indonesia summit held at the Blue House on the 1st, President Lee and President Prabowo expressed satisfaction that the joint development of the KF-21 and IF-21 fighter jets, which has been ongoing for over 10 years, is scheduled to be completed this coming June, and agreed to cooperate on the mass production of the IF-21. In addition, they agreed to explore cooperation on other defense projects, such as training aircraft, anti-tank guided missiles, and ammunition.

Indonesia has participated in the KF-21 development project since 2016, but the process has been fraught with difficulties, including a reduction of over 1 trillion won in its initially promised contribution of 1.7 trillion won and the emergence of allegations regarding technology leakage by Indonesian technical personnel. However, at present, Indonesia is considered a major customer with a high probability of acquiring the IF-21. In this regard, President Lee remarked during the expanded meeting, “(Indonesia) is a valuable partner for the K-defense industry today.” President Prabowo responded, “Even within a family, various misunderstandings can arise. However, what is important is that Korea and Indonesia share common interests.”

Prabowo Sends Team to Seoul to Accelerate KF-21 Aircraft Imports

tirto.id - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the bilateral meeting between Indonesia and South Korea will serve as a forum to re-discuss the purchase of the KF-21 fighter jet project.

President Prabowo Subianto will follow up on the import plan, which has been in the works since the era of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, by sending a team to discuss technical aspects, including the fighter jet's systems and engines.

"The President said he will immediately send a team, both technical and engineering," he said in a press statement to the media, as quoted by the Presidential Secretariat YouTube channel, Thursday (April 2, 2026).

On March 25, KAI held a rollout ceremony for the first mass-production unit at its factory in Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do. Business Korea reports that if the contract with Indonesia is realized, the KF-21 will be the first export since the development program began in 2015.

Airlangga said the President hopes the payment process can begin simultaneously with the dispatch of the team from Indonesia. "He also hopes that there will be a new payment for the project, because this has been discussed since President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's time, then continued by President Jokowi, and now," he continued.

However, he could not yet specify the number of KF-21 units that Indonesia will bring in. "There are indeed technical issues related to specifications and other matters, but hopefully these will be resolved with the team sent there," he said.
