the main point is to keep the crew survivability. if you look closely to how Soviet Tank design they never concerned about crew comfort or survivability. furthermore, if you still have obsolete Leo 2 A1, its still can be upgraded to match A7 standard.

Any modern tanks can be destroyed with their turrets flying sky high given the right condition.
But that's exactly the point: due to the way the ammunitions are stored, the probability for "the right condition" to happen in Russian T-series tanks is notoriously a lot higher than in modern Western tanks as has been proven over time.
