We actually already sent troops there, but the number was/is small.
Co-deployment (?) With Australia. We deploy 1 Battalion there. I don't think this one already happen.

Whatever it is, please change the camo, Desert DPM like camo that used for UNIFIL is so ~~~.

Just wonder, if the US Army prefer such solution and adopted it, this surely would be mass adopted at scale involved not only their internal units (Army and Marine corps) but their whole Allies too, meanwhile Indonesian Armed Forces as one who took NATO pattern as standard for their small arms and munition is should looking what they would do next? Follow the trend or stick with the old way?

I'm sure that Mali is not like a walk in the park.
We are coming from a moslem majority country and ingrained in our basic culture courtesy to never walk with our nose pointed to the sky while mingling in . With the UN umbrella on our helmet . Yeah , compared to other " shining knight " countries . It's a walk in the park .
If even after much of our humility and courtesy showcased to world at large somebody still try to messed us up ... We are carrying big stick there wasn't just for a parade isn't ??

To early to tell .... While the kinetic performance are promising . Until it profiliate much further among the rest of NATO'S nothing good will come to us if we are jumping in too early ....
Off course some preparation should be prepared and examined .

Different tool for different job. The US Army need something with ballistic performance comparable to that of the 7.62mm NATO but still lightweight enough (duh...) thus not become a logistical burden.

I personally haven't had any experience with 6.8 SPC (if anyone here do, pls do share your insight), however 5.56mm still have few advantages, such as ;
  • Tendency to tumbling inside soft tissue. This is very desirable property for those in Law Enforcement role to avoid over penetration, thus avoiding injuring anyone behind the target.
  • Lightweight enough, thus enabling an individual soldier to carry more ammo.
In place such as a-stan, the 6.8 SPC will prove very effective compare to 5.56mm. However, in jungle like environment where engagement range is typically less than 100m (based upon 🇺🇸 in NAM experience), the 5.56mm still have the advantage simply by being more lightweight.

yea, peace ops in Mali more like combat mission than regular peacekeeping ops,

that's why most nation involved in peace ops there are well train and equip nation like French, UK, Germany, Sweden, Canada, Dutch, Denmark, China and more.

it's like in the early day of Afghanistan (2001-2006) when it still an peacekeeping ops under UN/NATO ISAF before it become full combat ops in 2007 only this time the people in Mali are more support on the peacekeeper than the insurgent.

for now 5.56 still good for use.

the current intermediate ammunition are design when body armor are not common but with GWOT and all of that stuff, body armor becoming more common up to the point that regular civilian can have them.
that and afghan experience led them to US Army NGSW program.
.
.
.
right now NGSW program are to choose which weapon and round are going the next step is to test those weapon with US army ordering 10.000(?) each and the decision to change from 5.56 to 6.8 wouldn't come till 2025.

if 6.8 chosen, that would not guarantee to be NATO standard (at least not until 2030-ish), because most NATO country who 5.56 user are just or in progress of replacing their existing weapon with a new one. even in the US, the marine just started issue M27 IAR as replacement for their SAW, M16 and M4 rifle, so there's going to be some objection in adapting new round.

I beg.to differ in some.of that ...
While some are go there for a live trainings combat , some for a containment and some for a past life glory achievment reenacment . I bet on @NEKO's testicles none of them come in there out of their samaritan's heart intention and try their best for Mali's nation building and reconstruction ...
While i do agree the prevalent public sentiment toward the islamist at large . with the " holier than thou " attitudes approaches and lack of coherent's planning in the UN side .... Mali are in the fast track to become Afghan 2.0 ....
And this is where the developing country's touch are shining their brightest Halos to plug the leaks from all the properly equipped nation hubriss

I might be wrong, but I don't think we're in a position where switching to a whole new caliber can be done in most efficient and economical way - at least not in the next 20 years.

Since the 6.8 SPC is billed to have similar ballistic performance as that of 7.62 NATO, I'm thinking the most viable way is to replace whatever it is currently using 7.62 NATO chambering into 6.8 SPC. And as time goes, gradually replacing the 5.56mm.

Universal ammo was an economic way to go . But jack of all trades was a master of none .... If we only goes for a peer to a peer enggagement then 6.8 was the future but somehow unless for a specific region ( papua ) 5.56 still has it's merit too ..

And now the trend are changing ... From 5.56 and 7.62 . to 6.8 and 338 mm ...
While 12.7 are still the king ..

My opinion, right now one of the good combination of caliber are the one like the one use in old soviet doctrine or British Post-Afghan (current) doctrine are.

that is using dual caliber ammunition in a squad level, so using combination of 5.56 as standard round and when needed for larger punch/range 7.62 can be used.

while its not great as chambering all in 6.8 but it's still a good fix for us right now (though it needed to change doctrine).
